Art Basel was fantastic
by artfriend on 12/6/11Miami Beach Convention Center - Miami BeachFor art lovers, this event should not be missed. The works at Art Basel itself are very high end and an interesting look into the world of art collectors and investors. Galleries and artists from all over the world exhibit there. For myself and my friends the real excitement was in the tent shows. The design show across the street from Art Basel was incredible. Pulse and Art Miami located in the "design district" in Miami were also terrific. Pulse was outstanding--our favorite, in fact. The gallery owners, artists and work there was high caliber. We loved the works and especially enjoyed the gallery owners and artists we met. They seemed genuinely passionate about the pieces they exhibited. We happened upon these shows by accident, but enjoyed them so much more than Art Basel itself. We stayed in South Beach. The hotel prices were high but worth it because so much activity was in walking distance. Ocean Drive at night should not be missed. The old, renovated Art Deco hotels are all lit up and the street is filled with people. The Lincoln Avenue pedestrian mall is another area we loved-- with three blocks of outdoor restaurants and shops. We preferred that area for eating. It is worth taking time to select your restaurants. Some are outstanding, others cookie cutter. The beach itself was beautiful for walking. We didn't get to any clubs, but the nightlife offers something for everyone. South Beach is a very cosmopolitan area, a melting pot of cultures and languages. Art Basel is a good reason to go if you love art. Miami Beach is a great place for it.
