About Aries Spears

Aries Spears Live

One of the most versatile and unbridled performers in the world of comedy, Aries Spears has been killing it in front of audiences ever since he began performing at clubs at the age of 14. Born in Chicago and raised in New Jersey, Spears has proven himself again and again both onstage as a stand-up and sketch comedian and in his many appearances in TV and films.

Audiences know him best from his eight seasons on MAD TV. Joining for the TV comedy institution's third season in 1997, he became the series' second-longest serving cast member as well as one of its most consistently hilarious thanks to his many recurring characters and impressions of Michael Jackson, Kanye West, Eddie Murphy, Shaquille O'Neal and many more. In 2006, Damon Wayans picked Spears to be one of the cast members in his Showtime sketch comedy series The Underground. Spears' other TV and film appearances include Malcolm X, Jerry Maguire and CSI Miami.

His debut comedy album, Aries Spears: I Ain't Scared was released in 2005. In 2011, Showtime presented his stand-up special Aries Spears: Hollywood, Look I'm Smiling. He followed up with 2016's Aries Spears: Comedy Blueprint, another showcase of his fearless brand of no-holds-barred comedy.

Aries Spears Background

A natural cutup with family and friends growing up in Chicago and New Jersey, Aries Spears began performing his jokes and impressions in New York and New Jersey while still a teenager. The young comedian was soon making appearances on such TV shows as Def Comedy Jam and It's Showtime at the Apollo. After moving to Los Angeles, he continued to develop the acting career that began with a part in Spike Lee's Malcolm X in 1992. Meanwhile, he honed his stand-up skills at such legendary clubs as the Comedy Store, the Laugh Factory and the Improv.

In 1997, he became part of the cast for the Fox sketch comedy series MAD TV, where his original characters and impressions of such celebrities as Kanye West, Snoop Dogg and Eddie Murphy made him a fan favorite during his eight-season run. Spears' later film and TV credits include Damon Wayans' sketch series The Underground, Jiminy Glick in Lalawood and CSI Miami.

Spears displayed his onstage prowess as a stand-up on numerous national tours as well as the 2005 comedy album Aries Spears: I Ain't Scared and two TV specials: Aries Spears: Hollywood, Look I'm Smiling (2011) and Aries Spears: Comedy Blueprint (2016). In 2020, he was part of the ensemble of iconic comedians featured on Def Comedy Jam's Healing Through Laughter, a livestream benefit hosted by Cedric the Entertainer.

by Shiz05 on 6/23/13Cobb's Comedy Club - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Great material. Brought back some old bits, which is great. The two openers were good as well, the second one was a bit better than the first.

  • Men--don't wear a turtleneck sweater to a show!

by Rozz on 1/17/13Punch Line Comedy Club - Sacramento - SacramentoRating: 4 out of 5

Aries was funny as usual, but he took it up a notch when he started clowning this dude who was mean-mugging him. Every punch line afterwards ended with a reference to the sweater--everybody was cracking up!!

What an amazing show! This guy keeps getting funnier and funnier. I honestly think his stand-up is his best quality and I hope he gets bigger in the near future. Big ups to my man Areis Spears!

While my son was home from college, my husband and I wanted to spend a fun evening with our son. We purchased tickets to see Aries Spears at the Punchline and we had a blast. Aries had the whole crowd laughing throughout the night. It was such a fun evening that we've told our friends the next time Aries is in town...go see him. He was hilarious!

Great show, as expected. Aries spent the majority of the time on stage; his opener only was on for about twenty minutes.

Aries Spears was hilarious! His routine was new and yes, he clowned the audience. Word to the wise, don't wear a turtle neck and remember it is a comedy club. My wife and I would definitely recommend you see this man!

  • awesome

by wyldstyle on 6/12/12Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

this dude is under rated and needs to be in the same lime as the greats and the new greats he has a twist of real issues with a comedic demeanor ......he needs to have more publicity and more fans like me

  • Wasn't too impress...

by Lavendertia on 6/12/12Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

I was not too impress. Before I saw him live, I actually like him. But now I think he's kind of bland. I thought his opening acts were better than him. Maybe he should've just stuck to impersonating celebs....

  • very funny

    by jenni11 on 6/11/12Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

very funny guy!! Aries is very talented and I would not mind seeing him again.

  • Aries Spears was INCREDIBLE & FUNNIER THAN EVER!!!

by Divafox85 on 5/16/11Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

I just couldn't believe it! We were a little late arriving but made it on time & wouldn't you know it...of all the people that I would have to bump into coming into the Lyric Center - it was Aries Spears! And when I say "Bump in to" - that's exactly what I did..as I was getting my ticket checked at the door - he comes right up to me & all I could say was "Hello, please excuse me." His show was the BEST comedy show I've seen in years! I can't wait until he comes back again!!!! FRONT ROW seats were the best!!!!
