About Aries Spears

Aries Spears Live

One of the most versatile and unbridled performers in the world of comedy, Aries Spears has been killing it in front of audiences ever since he began performing at clubs at the age of 14. Born in Chicago and raised in New Jersey, Spears has proven himself again and again both onstage as a stand-up and sketch comedian and in his many appearances in TV and films.

Audiences know him best from his eight seasons on MAD TV. Joining for the TV comedy institution's third season in 1997, he became the series' second-longest serving cast member as well as one of its most consistently hilarious thanks to his many recurring characters and impressions of Michael Jackson, Kanye West, Eddie Murphy, Shaquille O'Neal and many more. In 2006, Damon Wayans picked Spears to be one of the cast members in his Showtime sketch comedy series The Underground. Spears' other TV and film appearances include Malcolm X, Jerry Maguire and CSI Miami.

His debut comedy album, Aries Spears: I Ain't Scared was released in 2005. In 2011, Showtime presented his stand-up special Aries Spears: Hollywood, Look I'm Smiling. He followed up with 2016's Aries Spears: Comedy Blueprint, another showcase of his fearless brand of no-holds-barred comedy.

Aries Spears Background

A natural cutup with family and friends growing up in Chicago and New Jersey, Aries Spears began performing his jokes and impressions in New York and New Jersey while still a teenager. The young comedian was soon making appearances on such TV shows as Def Comedy Jam and It's Showtime at the Apollo. After moving to Los Angeles, he continued to develop the acting career that began with a part in Spike Lee's Malcolm X in 1992. Meanwhile, he honed his stand-up skills at such legendary clubs as the Comedy Store, the Laugh Factory and the Improv.

In 1997, he became part of the cast for the Fox sketch comedy series MAD TV, where his original characters and impressions of such celebrities as Kanye West, Snoop Dogg and Eddie Murphy made him a fan favorite during his eight-season run. Spears' later film and TV credits include Damon Wayans' sketch series The Underground, Jiminy Glick in Lalawood and CSI Miami.

Spears displayed his onstage prowess as a stand-up on numerous national tours as well as the 2005 comedy album Aries Spears: I Ain't Scared and two TV specials: Aries Spears: Hollywood, Look I'm Smiling (2011) and Aries Spears: Comedy Blueprint (2016). In 2020, he was part of the ensemble of iconic comedians featured on Def Comedy Jam's Healing Through Laughter, a livestream benefit hosted by Cedric the Entertainer.

He is one of the funniest people I’ve ever seen. His opener was ok. But he had half a house and you would have thought it was a stadium. Simply amazing

Aries Spears is an Amazing seasoned comic. I'd definitely rank him up there as one of the best on stage. He did a 90 minute set of pure comedy Gold. Raunchy, over the top and insanely funny. This was my 3rd time seeing him in action and he never disappoints. My abs are still hurting from laughing so hard. Definitely one of my most Favorite...

  • Yikes

by Dré on 1/14/20Lynn Auditorium - LynnRating: 2 out of 5

This was one of the most offensive sets that I’ve seen in a long time. What is irritating is that comedians love to rest on the roots and history of comedy as reasons to validate disrespect. However, my understanding of stand up is that, historically, the greatest comedians were great not because they tore others down while conveying a story, but they were able to tell truths in a humorous way that removed the necessity of invalidating a plethora of people’s life experiences. If you’re attempting to tell truths via dated stereotypes, racially discriminatory tropes, and just simple ignorance...I’d rather not call that comedy. The set was borderline abusive to those sitting in the audience who identify with the targeted communities.

Shocked at how raunchy, yet poignant he was! I laughed so hard, the back of my head hurt and I had to dry my eyes! Definitely not a show for those that are easily offended or for the faint at heart!

Aries Spears is the best. He kept me laughing through the whole show. He even made my serious husband laugh and my husband barely laughs. I can't wait to see another performance.

  • Awesome Show

Small venue - intimate setting. Spears is absolutely hysterical! Love how he connected with the crowd. Used some previous material but his delivery makes it seem new. Been a fan for many years - would definitely see him again. “Utah, white peoples Africa” bahahaahaha

  • Great show

    by T. S. on 7/14/19Punch Line Philly - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was held at Punchline in Philly. My group & I were seated right next to the stage. We were sure to get picked on by the comedians but got SPARED, thank goodness lol. Though both comedians were VERY interactive with the audience. Aries was hilarious. He used a lot of new material. Even his opening act was pretty good. I enjoyed the entire show. They even took free pictures after the show with no pressure to buy there merchandise but my group & I bought t-shirts & CD’s after taking pictures with them.
