About

Bursting onto the scene with the playful party single "Barbie Girl," Aqua catapulted to superstardom in 1997. In 2011, The Danish-Norwegian foursome returned to the studio to record Megalomania, their first new album in over ten years. After pursuing different avenues in the entertainment industry, band frontwoman Lene was discovered while working as a television host by René Dif, a Norwegian DJ with a ton of industry experience. Recognizing her energy and talent for what it was, he immediately recruited her for the band he'd just recently formed with two friends. It was 1994, and Aqua was now complete. A mere two years later, they were signed to Universal Music Denmark and released their first single, "Roses are Red."

"Aqua Diary," a 1998 documentary, captured the spirit of the band's live act. Culled from concert footage shot during their Aquarium tour, the documentary offers fans a glimpse of the energy Aqua is capable of onstage. During one part of the film, Lene teases ticket holders while strutting across the stage, striking a riot girl appearance amidst the strobes and smoke of a hip, club atmosphere. Megalomania came as a surprise to fans, who were expecting a throwback to the band's bubblegum days. What they got instead were tunes like "Kill Myself" and "Playmate to Jesus," songs with unexpected thematic twists. The band's greatest hits album is due for release in 2014.

Of course, the band will always be known for their mega smash, "Barbie Girl." The fun, infectious beat set the song a cut above the average novelty single. Today, Aqua continues to draw a new generation of fans who know fun when they hear it.

    Happy Nostalgia

by Buzz on 12/13/23The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

I had been a fan for quite some time and seeing them in concert was on my bucket list. Their music always kept me positive when I was in a dark place. They were exactly like I imagined, vibrant and full of energy. Their voices had not changed over the years. Lene looked the same as she always has, beautiful, remarkable, and still hit her high tones. While Rene still has his brassy gruff singing-voice. They kept the crowds energized and sang non-stop only pausing to take a quick drink on stage. I suppose the only con would be that I wished they had sung "like a robot.."My other regret is that I didn't purchase the VIP and meet them, that regret will stay with me.

    Aqua First time in Detroit

by Canadian Guy on 12/13/23The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

I was not 100% sure about this concert but had an amazing time! Aqua did an amazing job at all songs and loved the songs with videos in the background. It was their first time in Detroit (not sure how that is possible) and loved the encore songs as they wore Red Wings jerseys.

    Aqua Concert in Boston

by Beelzebub666 on 12/9/23Citizens House of Blues Boston - Boston

The event venue was great. Event staff and security kept the crowd moving. The Band was fantastic, and I was thrilled to be able to see them. The fans were the best. It was the most well behave and fun crowd I have ever seen. The sound had too much bass, and there were times you could not hear the artist. They should have turn down the volume and reduce the bass.

    25 years later… <3

by Fike on 12/9/23Citizens House of Blues Boston - Boston

Seeing Aqua with a live band and backup singers was awesome. Lene, René, and Søren were so much fun and they made everyone feel like part of the show. My voice was sore for days, after! So much fun.

Aqua makes a big splash in Boston!

by ILoveThe90s on 12/9/23Citizens House of Blues Boston - Boston

Absolutely incredible show at the beautiful Boston House of Blues! Every 90’s kids’ wildest dream came true as the Barbie World Tour showcased Aqua’s greatest hits like Cartoon Heros, Candyman, Around The World and My Oh My (and plenty of amazing deep-cuts as well). All the band’s iconic videos were delightfully presented on the backdrop screen but now, they’ve creatively added all the new live band members into them seamlessly. A band with so much more to say than bubblegum and innuendo, the night was filled with emotional moments and honest reflection with some of their deeper tracks like Playmate to Jesus and Aquarius. Aqua’s first tour across the United States has certainly come with great success and we all hope to be dancing along with Dr. Jones and Barbie Girl again very soon!

    Wonderful Experience

by SimSim on 12/9/23Citizens House of Blues Boston - Boston

I listened to a lot of Aqua back in the late 90s and when I heard they coming I was excited. Aqua didn’t disappoint! They were fun, lively, and the singing was all them. I would see Aqua again for sure!

    A 90s kid's biggest dream come true

by Mizu on 12/8/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

The doors were a little delayed to open due to the VIP group taking longer than usual, but the show started on time and was just incredible

    Glad I went

by Robnskee on 12/8/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Aqua did not disappoint. This was their first US your in 20 years. The lead vocalist was excellent. The audience was very nice and friendly. The bass could have been turned down. It was so loud I felt it in my body. I had to move towards the center and rear of the audience. I was fine once I moved back further. And I could still see and hear Aqua clearly. Hope they return to the US sooner next time.

    Hardcore

by Quintrala on 12/7/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

I went to this concert thinking I would be raving and jumping to the rhythm but they didn't really use any electronic devices to make the music. It was instead played live with guitar, drums, etc. The sound was great but this was not techno. The show was more like hardcore.

    The Bubble Experience.

by Dust on 12/5/23Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

The VIP package was worth the additional expense as the three are personal, approachable, and extremely kind. The music from the 90s brought back the nostalgia I needed but wanted more of their later work. You couldn't ask for a better band, venue, or experience and would highly recommend.

Everything I Dreamed It Would Be

by Holly on 12/2/23House of Blues Orlando - Orlando

This concert was everything I dreamed it would be. The band was fun, engaging, excited to be performing, and the music was amazing. They performed my favorite song, Didn’t I, which I wasn’t expecting because it’s a bonus track. I would happily stand in the cold, travel a distance, do whatever it takes to see them again!

    Jump, Dance, Sing, and SMILE

by Silvia on 12/1/23House of Blues Orlando - Orlando

I had such a great time dancing, jumping around, singing along, waving, and grinning all night long. I only recently learned about the Megalomania album so I had that on repeat for the weeks leading up to the concert. My tickets were in flux shortly before so a little panic, but it ended up better than expected. The venue was small enough to give it a close, intimate feel. I think a lot of people there were just happy vibing. I even checked Aqua's tour list to see if mayyyyybe I could go see them again.
