Angels & Airwaves on Tour

Although blink-182 guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge is also the creative engine behind Angels & Airwaves, his two bands couldn't be more different. That's especially evident live: Although both groups offer up energetic sets, the Angels & Airwaves experience hews toward epic, heart-racing rock ‘n' roll. DeLonge is a soulful, passionate frontman who takes vocal and physical cues from charismatic superstar frontmen — think U2's Bono and Coldplay's Chris Martin — while his bandmates bash out soundscapes around him.

Over the years, Angels & Airwaves have toured with Weezer, appeared on the Vans Warped Tour, and landed spots at the Reading & Leeds Festivals. In 2019, the band embarked on their first tour in seven years and celebrated the occasion by releasing a keyboard-heavy, 1980s throwback single, "Rebel Girl."

Angels & Airwaves Background

When blink-182 went on hiatus in early 2005, DeLonge didn't miss a beat: He hunkered down in a home studio and crafted music for a new project that he dubbed Angels & Airwaves (sometimes abbreviated as AVA, in no small part because it's also the name of DeLonge's daughter). Although blink-182 favored brisk pop-punk, DeLonge's new tunes were cinematic rock indebted to U2 and '80s synth-pop, and buoyed by chiming synths and guitars.

Despite the different sound, Angels & Airwaves immediately connected with fans. The band's first two albums, 2006's gold-certified We Don't Need to Whisper and 2007's I-Empire, spawned five songs that made the Top 40 of Billboard's alternative songs chart — highlighted by 2006's "The Adventure," which peaked at No. 5. DeLonge's confidence grew with this success. Subsequent albums (including 2010's Love and 2011's Love: Pt. 2) boasted epic thematic concepts that explored philosophical and existential topics, as well as expansive sonic palettes with heavier guitars, prog flourishes and more experimental keyboards.

Ever ambitious, Angels & Airwaves also started dabbling in film projects. In 2008, they released the band origin documentary Start the Machine, while 2011 saw the release of the sci-fi-tinged Love. To go along with 2014's The Dream Walker, they even released an animated short called Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker.

Great Concert actually my First Concert in FL

by www.laobrademarte.com on 10/29/21Jannus Live - St Petersburg

The organization of the concert was GREAT. I love the venue they selected. The two opening bands (My Baby Brother from FL) and the Bad Suns (LA) were great. As a local bandmember I can say that I would have loved that the mic levels and the output speakers for the Opening band "My Baby Brother" would be louder. We could barely hear the voices and that is something that actually affects how the bands is perceived in terms of professionalism. I can assume that the sound engineers did this on purpose so that the main act cannot be "out played". Besides the sound, the band's music and concept its pretty cool, it reminds me of "Vampire Weekend" but better. When the Bad Suns came in, they ROCKED, The sound for this band was Crispy Clear and Clean, and even though I had never heard this band before it seems that they are pretty famous in Mainland US because there were a lor of younger audience singing along parts of the songs. They remind me of a younger more energetic Coldplay. The musicians seems pretty talented in their instruments, and in their stage precense. And Finally THE ACT, the one and only AVA Angels & Airways this show was PERFECT. I LOVE THEM.

Awesome show but with a long sad rant by Delonge

by mayspeachy on 10/29/21Jannus Live - St Petersburg

the show was absolutely amazing - all 3 bands were great. My first time seeing Angels and Airwaves. Tom went on a very long rant about his father passing away from cancer which was extremely hard to listen to when you're trying to have fun.

    Great show, cool venue

by Amy on 10/29/21Jannus Live - St Petersburg

The show was great, though the show time was a little vague, as was the number of openers. Would have preferred to have been able to print my ticket. But the venue was great, the show was greater.

    Everything it Should Have Been

by Adam on 10/26/21Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

This show was everything it should have been. A nice mix of newer songs with the older hits. A fantastic mid-show monologue by Tom made up for some childish banter with the crowd that would have played better back when he was 20, not in his early 40s. The venue was clean and not overly crowded. Security was kind and helpful. Drinks were impossible to apprehend prior to the show and the 3 bartenders they employ were novices at best. Once the main act came on drinks were accessible if typically overpriced and made wrong. Overall a great show at a decent venue.

    AVA did not disappoint

by Caz on 10/24/21House of Blues Boston - Boston

Well, aside from a few logistical issues with the venue (understandable due to covid etc) this was an excellent show. AVA was superb. Nice mix of standards and new music. Tom DeLonge was hysterically funny, and poignant (spoke of the loss of his dad) This show definitely is ranked in my Top 5 of all time great shows.

by Bren on 10/23/21House of Blues Boston - Boston

One of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. I had heart eyes all night for Tom. Then he let us know the music would make all to ladies in the crowd pregnant and what would you know, I’m gonna be a father! Thank you so much Tom, David, Matt, and Ilan! Love you

by Spugnation on 10/23/21House of Blues Boston - Boston

to see someone you have idolized since early blink days was a trip... i love you tom, it was an amazing, inspiring, positive, fun and funny and HEAVEN music to my ears. the sounds of AVA are compelling, spot on... and when tom would say "F#*( WE SOUND GOOD!" he was and IS RIGHT. it's BEAUTIFUL... there were times i would just close my eyes and it all made sense... blink and AVA were the sounds of the greatest years of my life, and to see them live i was in tears! my husband and i's wedding song was "the adventure"--- we hugged and danced when it played. thank you tom and AVA--- love you TOM so much... THANK YOU for being you and being there for us in our years that got us through hard and magical times.

    Great concert and venue!

by parishchick on 10/19/21EXPRESS LIVE! - Columbus

I read a lot of reviews about indoor concerts at Express Live, most of which were not the greatest. I am not sure if post-COVID crowd numbers made a difference, but my spouse and I had a blast! It was crowded but not overwhelming, the temperature was comfortable, and the beer was to our liking. Angels & Airwaves was in the reason for our visit and the band did not disappoint…great overall experience!

    It wasn't just a concert

by dustin on 10/13/21The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

Between the music, lights, and the stories that Angels & Airwaves told throughout it made a concert turn into an experience of magic as the band shared a message of hope, Love, togetherness, and spoke poetically and worldly relatable of a life beyond this one. Leaving one feeling peaceful and full of hope, the best live show i have ever been to. Needless to say they sent Angels of sound, lights, and poetry into the Airwaves.
