Angels & Airwaves on Tour

Although blink-182 guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge is also the creative engine behind Angels & Airwaves, his two bands couldn't be more different. That's especially evident live: Although both groups offer up energetic sets, the Angels & Airwaves experience hews toward epic, heart-racing rock ‘n' roll. DeLonge is a soulful, passionate frontman who takes vocal and physical cues from charismatic superstar frontmen — think U2's Bono and Coldplay's Chris Martin — while his bandmates bash out soundscapes around him.

Over the years, Angels & Airwaves have toured with Weezer, appeared on the Vans Warped Tour, and landed spots at the Reading & Leeds Festivals. In 2019, the band embarked on their first tour in seven years and celebrated the occasion by releasing a keyboard-heavy, 1980s throwback single, "Rebel Girl."

Angels & Airwaves Background

When blink-182 went on hiatus in early 2005, DeLonge didn't miss a beat: He hunkered down in a home studio and crafted music for a new project that he dubbed Angels & Airwaves (sometimes abbreviated as AVA, in no small part because it's also the name of DeLonge's daughter). Although blink-182 favored brisk pop-punk, DeLonge's new tunes were cinematic rock indebted to U2 and '80s synth-pop, and buoyed by chiming synths and guitars.

Despite the different sound, Angels & Airwaves immediately connected with fans. The band's first two albums, 2006's gold-certified We Don't Need to Whisper and 2007's I-Empire, spawned five songs that made the Top 40 of Billboard's alternative songs chart — highlighted by 2006's "The Adventure," which peaked at No. 5. DeLonge's confidence grew with this success. Subsequent albums (including 2010's Love and 2011's Love: Pt. 2) boasted epic thematic concepts that explored philosophical and existential topics, as well as expansive sonic palettes with heavier guitars, prog flourishes and more experimental keyboards.

Ever ambitious, Angels & Airwaves also started dabbling in film projects. In 2008, they released the band origin documentary Start the Machine, while 2011 saw the release of the sci-fi-tinged Love. To go along with 2014's The Dream Walker, they even released an animated short called Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker.

    If you're into concerts, go

by pitfireriot on 4/6/10The Warfield - San Francisco

Although I am a fan of Angels & Airwaves, Say Anything, the opening act, is who i went to see as they are one of my favorite bands. If you're a Say Anything fan--they were really good live. Their setlist was Hate Everyone, Girlfriend, She Touched Herself, Do Better, Woe, Mara & Me, Eloise, & Alive with the glory of Love. I was on the balcony and throughout the whole concert--AVA & SA--the energy just wasn't there. I was amongst a few other people singing and dancing but overall the crowd wasn't really happening. As for the bands, they were great.

AVA launches the S.F. Warfield to the moon on 4/5

by Smadia25 on 4/6/10The Warfield - San Francisco

I am going to make this short as the audio and visual quality of the show were both a "10", but it was best summed up by Tom when saying goodnight to us last night when he said, "We got 47 more shows and this is A LOT to live up to, shit, this was a F'n great show, man"!! It was amazing and I would like to reach out to anyone who is still unsure about going, GO, you will regret not getting to feel what I am still feeling almost 24 hrs later!!

    Couldn't have been better!!

by Istandalonetoo on 4/6/10The Warfield - San Francisco

What more is there to expect from an AvA concert? It was absolutely amazing! Even better than the AvA concert I saw in Seattle a few years back. Tom is an absolutely brilliant musician and singer, Atom drums with the best, David's guitar almost sings, and Matt's synth/Bass sounds amazing. The lighting was spectacular as usual. If you haven't seen AvA, I would suggest (even if you have to drive a little further) going as soon as you can. It will for sure be the best concert you've ever seen. In addition, the opening band, Say Anything, was very good as well! Their I-Empire tour had some crappy opening bands, but Say Anything was entertaining and sounded great! Nice to see 2 amazing bands in a night! What an evening!

    Say Anything>Angels and Airwaves

by angelpoopie25 on 4/6/10The Warfield - San Francisco

Say Anything kicked off the night with their new single "I hate Everyone." I absolutely loved their energy, and Max Bemis has such great stage presence it's hard not to get into the songs. Angels and Airwaves was almost too good. Their set sounded too CD-like for me to really get into the beats. Great drummer, awesome vocals, heartfelt and 'fluffy.' This is not like Tom, but this new persona is winning fans over. Bottom line: Amazing show, well worth it. Great seats wherever you choose to stand on the floor!

    A great first show!

by MikexDub on 4/6/10The Warfield - San Francisco

AVA put on a great first show of the tour. Say Anything was so-so, in fact quite annoying and pretentious.

    Nice performance

by breava on 4/6/10The Warfield - San Francisco

Saw AVA last year in San Jose with Weezer, and this show was much better. Tom struggles to hit the notes live, but he did a much better job this go around. I would have to say the the same problem exists with the mixing of the music and vocals. The Synthesizer was overpowering versus the vocals especially on the encore. Overall all a good show. I would see them again for sure. It would be nice is they could pack the Warfield.

    Amazing show!

    by avafan10 on 1/15/10Madison Theater - Covington

Ive seen AvA 3 times in concert and was amazed each time I went the vibe of the crowd was mind blowing! Tom really gets in touch with the audience. I just cant wait for the next show cause I just introduced my girlfriend to the band and she loves them I want to take her to a live show and let her see just how amazing of a band these guys really are.

After seeing them play in Atlanta a little while back, I would drive all the way across the country to see them play again! The lights are mind blowing and they perform their hearts out. A truly fun show that you should not miss!

    Epic.

by d0ll3 on 7/16/09House of Blues. - Anaheim

Honestly, what these 4 guys put together on a stage, you dont see at your regular show. They arent a bunch of sweaty guys screaming, or just going through the motions. There is something epic about attending an AVA show, ive been to 7 shows, and not once was I dissapointed. The guys look like the enjoy what they do, and the fans sing their hearts out. The lighting and laser effects are well thought out. Definately cant wait for the next show.
