fantastic music and dancing married into art

by Durhamalfan on 6/24/14DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The music was fantastic and dancing perfectly suited and executed to it. I was in the front row and saw the strength, control and amazing synchrony during periods of no music - that is brutally hard. The quiet was well balanced with the frenzied sections.

    Matinee Performance!!

by ChapelHillTT on 6/24/14DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Very good adaptation for young children. Took my 3.5 year old and she was rapt with the movement.

    Support The Arts

by JRup on 6/24/14DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Each year we try to attend at least 1-2 ADF events and every time we are amazed by the level of creativity, skill and beauty of each performance. Ballet Hispanico did not let us down.

    Excellent for kids and adults

by Ficshunrules on 6/24/14DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

This was an amazing performance by Ballet Hispanico. The commentary in between pieces was very educational and interesting, it was interactive and very fun for the kids. The dancers were excellent!

    The best of the best

by expectbetterthanthat on 7/30/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The Mark Morris performance was spectacular. In addition to the impressive dancing, the musicians were amazing. Get the company to come again next year.

    Not as good as hoped

by forkfairy on 7/30/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I love Mark Morris's work and have seen his company a few times. This time it was not as fun as other performances. Generally his choreography (what I've seen and I know of) is quirky and amusing. The first piece was great! The other 3, we struggled to stay awake for. The other 3 were good, but not what we were hoping for. They didn't differentiate MMDG from any other company.

    Disappointed

by Harstu on 7/29/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I found the choreography unexciting. Clearly, the dancers are talented and wonderful to watch. It would have been better if I didn't feel like I was just watching exercises. It was very repetitive; the costumes were only so so. This was my very first time seeing Mark Morris Dance Group and I am doubtful I'll go out of my way (and schedule which I did this time) to see them.

    Thought Provoking Experience

by KatieB0123 on 7/23/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I had never seen Paul Taylor (or much modern dance) until last weekend when we saw the company at DPAC. I enjoyed the simplicity of Aureoles, the dancing was expressive with rotating groups of dancers, and a joyous tone. Big Bertha took a turn down a dark path about halfway through, and I read the message loud and clear- the loss of innocence within a family, to put it lightly. The acting and dancing was superior in this heavy piece. Next, the Gossamer piece...picture neon green and iridescent wings, and the mating habits of insects! We loved it, the costumes and choreography were full of energy and quite funny! The final Spanish inspired piece was also energetic and had more skilled choreography than earlier pieces. I usually tend to enjoy ballet more, but this was a nice liberation from ballet. I enjoyed the exposure to modern dance, and the high quality performance, sets, and costumes. Worth a trip to the theater to see Paul Taylor if it comes to your town!

Paul Taylor was fabulous, as usual

by BobKat2 on 7/23/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

All four dances were spectacular and remarkably different, displaying the creativity of Paul Taylor. They spanned his career from Aureole created in 1962 to a brilliant premier piece created just for ADF2012. What a joy!

    What was that?

by Anonymous on 7/23/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

A huge disappointment. We left early after seeing the second performance.

    Paul Taylor Dance was incredible

by JDWarshaw on 7/23/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Wonderful dance featuring four dances, all choreographed by Paul Taylor, which spanned his repertoire from 1962 to a premiere. The company is wonderful - not a weak link anywhere - and the lead male dancer is incredible to watch.

Fist and fourth dances were high quality. Could have done without dances 2 and 3.

I have been a fan of Paul Taylor Dance for years and this perfectly balanced program really offered an overiew of all the company's strengths and the amazing variety of Paul Taylor's choreography. The friend I had invited, who had never seen them dance, was blown away by the combination of athletic dance, musicality and the acting ability of the dancer's...we were able to truly appreciate their facial expressions since we were in the second row.

So sorry I went. Awful choreography!

by TenaflyGirl on 7/19/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The dancers were talented, when they were permitted by the choreographer to show their capabilities. The movements were jerky and extremely repetitive. This was an Israeli troupe, but not indicative of Isralei culture. The music was ....I'm not sure how to discribe it, recorded, repetitive, annoying. The costumes were ugly and covered up (all but 2) the dancer's bodies so you couldn't even appreciate their movements. Basically, it was just bad and a poor waste of time and money. So sorry.

    Dancing is Amazing!

by RedShoeDancing on 7/9/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

This is a wonderful show to introduce a 5+ yr old to modern dance and Pilobolus. However, the guy narrating is above most 5 yr old or children's heads and he talks about 35% of the show time which is a bit long for most children, so be pre-warned! Even with the warning the dancing is worth sitting thru the torture of bored children while the guy is talking. I would have given it more stars had there been more dance and less talk.

    Pilobolus Thrill

by HappyODay on 7/9/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The entire performance was perfection! The pace, the themes, the use of video, the music, and of course the fabulous choreography and the talented, beautiful dancers.............My eyes, ears and heart were filled to overflowing for two hours - the interpretations were breathtakingly clever and surprising. Thank you Pilobolus, Dance Festival, and DPAC.

    Pilobolus never fails to impress!

by opusworks on 7/9/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

My wife and I have had the pleasure of seeing Pilobolus on several occasions. Each performance has its own feel and flavor. I have to say that this was one of the best performances we've seen yet.

    Not truly a child's matinee

by MaddieMe on 7/9/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

This was a child's matinee. I expected short speeches and lots of visuals. The speaker was speaking in a manner no young child really understood and was rather lengthy. Only two of the visuals were appealing to children- the beginning little dance and the shadowplay. The other dances were neat but not truly appealing to little ones. I think that when shows are put on for children, children's attention span and interests needed to be taken into account. My 6 yr old daughter laughed at the first dance and shadow dance but was bored and restless with the rest of it. Pilobolus has some awe inspiring shadow dances and I had come expecting that. I left disappointed but pleased that I didn't spend too much money on the tickets! Also, concessions should be geared toward childrens. Not much that children could eat.

    Amazing as always

by Pega on 7/9/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Pilobolus is amazing, this performance was another gem. The only minus this time (and the reason for four stars) is their use of three mirrors in the last number: the reflected light was hitting us right in the eyes, so eventually we had to have our eyes closed almost completely thru the first half of it. Maybe it was only bad where our sits were (Grand Tier), not sure about the Orchestra sits.
