Like their band name, the multi-faceted sound of British indie rockers Alt-J (∆) requires a bit of explaining. The name derives from the combination of keys that results in a delta sign (∆) on Mac computers; the sound – a combination of folk-pop, skittering polyrhythms, and soaring falsetto harmonies – results in happy critics and even happier listeners. The quartet formed in 2007 in a Leeds Metropolitan University dorm room, and the constraints of recording demos in a quiet study environment heavily influenced their hushed, intricate approach to indie rock. Their 2012 debut An Awesome Wave received the Mercury Prize, Britain’s most prestigious music award, and launched the band to indie stardom with singles “Breezeblocks” and “Fitzpleasure.” Alt-J are on tour in 2013, and ticket buyers can be sure that no matter how big the venue, the band will deliver the intimate live concert they’ve become known for.
This was my sixth time seeing the band. They were great and the venue was great.
Really great performance. Sound was excellent. Great venue too.
An Awesome Wave is one of my favorite albums. I saw their 2013 tour, a few times in between, and the most recent 10th anniversary show. Everyone of them have been amazing. I could follow this band on tour if I had the $$$.
They not only met but exceeded my expectations. The light show was incredible as well as their performance. It was pretty funny when he messed up the beginning of Breezeblocks twice but he got it on the third try and it was amazing to experience live. The venue was so exquisite. I've never been to one like it. It was truly a great experience.
Alt-J is just hands-down the best contemporary rock group, and their live performance is every bit as amazing as they are. The musicality, the light show, all of it.
Ty Alt J, the concert was amazing and my girlfriend and I had a blast!!!
It was an absolutely amazing experience. The visual effects were amazing and I would definitely recommend seeing them.
When we got to our area to sit down they had closed it off and told us to go to will call to get new tickets. I really only was interested in seeing Portugal the Man and I could hear their intro video playing as we walked to will call. We get there and they give us tickets that are on the whole other side of the arena. So we missed a good chunk of their performance. Get to our seats and a few minutes later a couple comes over and tells us we are in their seats. They had the exact tickets that we did. So we had to go back to will call and rectify the situation. When that was all said and done Portugal the Man had finished their performance. I was annoyed with the whole situation. I wish I would have gotten an email or text telling me to go straight to will call or some kind of notice.
Music was great. Light show was exceptional. Why does this review have to be 50 characters to submit it? Weird
1. OVERALL GOOD ASPECTS Great performer lineup. Innovative and memorable stage design. Event staff were very attentive in helping customers find their seats and in answering questions. Prominently visible emergency medical staff on standby. Nice selection of snacks and drinks; good food buying experience. I did not run into any issues with other concertgoers around me. 2. SOUND ISSUE The pre-recorded music that played between sets sounded crisp and clear. But the live music was at once echoey and jarring; across the two dozen lyrical songs between the three artists that performed that night, I could make out only a handful of words during the roughly 3 hours of live music and singing that night, all the rest of the words and instrument sounds were unpleasantly muddled together with the rest of the echoey instrumentation. The sound system was powerful and provided that nice vibration in one's chest that you can only get at a live venue, but because of the aforementioned audio quality issue it was overall unpleasant to listen to. I talked to some other attendees later. They had seats near mine and, conversely, they thought it all sounded good. 3. CROWDING ISSUE To exit the venue at the end of the night, thousand of concertgoers squeezed into the corridor that wraps around the stands and slowly waddled to the exit located by the ticket booth while pressed together shoulder to shoulder. I am inexperienced at concert going; I wish I had thought ahead and hadn't let myself get caught in the throng of people trying to rush to get out. Most were not wearing masks and the narrow long corridor that the crowd slowly squeezed through made me nervous during this time when very infectious COVID variants are pretty common in this city. This crowding must be a normal part of the concert going experience in an arena; I just didn't anticipate it.
Super cool, had an awesome time! They had cool effects and the sounds was unreal!
Disappointing there was no in/out access and there was no smoking pit. Also when you bought a water they poured it out of the plastic bottle and into a plastic cup. Seems a giant waste of material and bad for the environment The bands also started too early. Hard to get in on time since there was only 1 entrance used. You need to either start the concert later and/or have more people working more entrances. The actual concert and music were excellent.
These 3 musicians are nothing less than virtuoso in their own kind. Purity/ cristal clear sound even in a large arena/ poetry of the visual/ voices and harmonisation/ brilliance of the set design with a touch of humility and class. Awsome
Quite possibly the best concert I’ve ever attended! Very tight performance by Alt-J with perfect sound quality, an amazing set, and phenomenal light show. The crowd was dynamic and the overall experience electric.
Absolutely bombastically, fantastical show! The lighting design was out of this world amazing. At times I felt like I was in an aquarium. The way the lights synced with the music was mind blowing. Alt-J have really grown into their sound and put on a lively and fun performance. Fitzpleasure was a real slapper live, holy moly! Every Other Freckle was gorgeous to hear fill the arena in all its lyrical genius. And I walked out having some of their newer songs, especially Hard Drive Gold stuck in my head! The only thing I felt was a negative drawback was that the bass and kick drum levels were turned up way too loud. It made it hard to hear Joe’s singing as well as the guitar and xylophone details. And this is a band that is very much about the details in their music. So I felt I missed out on that a bit. <3 Come back to America soon!
This show was incredible. Alt-J, everything was so nice ! Thank you :)
Excellent setlist, great visual effects and sound made that experience one of my best. Guest artists were great too.
I loved the show. Very good sound and visuals. The music was amazing.
Portugal + ALT-j is a great combination and add to that place Bell at Laval is a perfect place for thèse bands
I’ve been to hundreds of shows. This is not a lie. “I’ve never seen a show like this one” They are on the cutting edge of keeping us entertained. Cant wait to see Alt J again
