Like their band name, the multi-faceted sound of British indie rockers Alt-J (∆) requires a bit of explaining. The name derives from the combination of keys that results in a delta sign (∆) on Mac computers; the sound – a combination of folk-pop, skittering polyrhythms, and soaring falsetto harmonies – results in happy critics and even happier listeners. The quartet formed in 2007 in a Leeds Metropolitan University dorm room, and the constraints of recording demos in a quiet study environment heavily influenced their hushed, intricate approach to indie rock. Their 2012 debut An Awesome Wave received the Mercury Prize, Britain’s most prestigious music award, and launched the band to indie stardom with singles “Breezeblocks” and “Fitzpleasure.” Alt-J are on tour in 2013, and ticket buyers can be sure that no matter how big the venue, the band will deliver the intimate live concert they’ve become known for.
Much to me and my blankets disappointment it wasn't outside. It should have been outside.
CD102.5 once again proved just how truly amazing they are by putting together a stellar lineup to celebrate 20+ years of independent radio! Love this station and huge props to everyone who works there! You all do a fantastic job!!!
I've been looking forward to this show for a while, and Alt-J did NOT disappoint. Love Terminal 5, have seen a few shows there before so I knew what I was getting into, and I was able to find the coat check this time! Love the rooftop access as well. Alt-J played all songs off their album plus Buffalo and a cover of a song they had never played before to an audience! Hundred Waters, their opener, was fantastic as well, even though their backup singer lost her voice. Alt-J started off by playing the first three songs off the album in a row, which was pure perfection, then mixed it up from there. They played 2 encore songs and ended with Taro!
Alt-J was amazing live. The music sounded similar enough to the original album that the music was good yet different enough so that the show made for an overall fantastic experience. Would absolutely see again and would recommend to any Alt-J (∆ ) fan out there.
In addition to Alt-J's amazing new sound, they had such an awesome stage presence and their set was beyond cool. they used these lights that really enhanced the experience.
ALT J are probably the most talented act out there today, fantastic band. Terminal 5 is a crime against music.
What an amazing show! Alt-J sounded wonderful and it was so much fun to dance to. I can't wait until they come back to NYC so I can do it all over again!
Great show! Best I've ever seen at Terminal 5. If you like Awesome Wave, go see them!
What an awesome wave !! Such a tight band. They played all their songs from the album and I was wishing they had more to play, The night ended fast. but, I was really happy that I heard the whole album. also they have a really good light show
This show was so amazing. I never imagined such a rollercoaster of sound. This band is unlike anything that has come before it and it takes some time to register... and once it has registered there is nothing you want to hear more.
I am still in awe of Alt-J and their adorable stage presence. I'm SO glad I got tickets, despite my aversion to Terminal 5. In fact, had the show been anywhere else I'm sure it would have been even more amazing if that's possible.
There cocnert was amazing! Completely unforgettable. I only wish it was longer, but when you don't have many songs, you can only play so much! Love, love love!!
Good venue for seeing the bands up close. Alt-J sounded great and played basically all their songs. Fitzpleasure and Breezeblocks were highlights for me. Had never heard of Hundred Waters but they were amazing. Think I fell in love with the lead singer for a day. Only thing lacking was more visual effects.
They're phenomenal live. I heartily recommend. A must see love! Top lads as well. Got to hang out with them afterward and they were ace!!
Alt-J was great on Saturday! Saw them in December at Brighton Music Hall and they seemed a little rusty, and unsure of how the would be received. Saturday's sold out show was a dance fest!
Alt-J is a supremely talented group. They sound exactly like their CD and have a great low-key but engaging stage presence. Their musical talent is unbelievable and it was a really awesome show! Very satisfying.
I'm a huge Alt-j fan and couldn't wait to see them live. They were fantastic! Great performance. I was very impressed and I fell in more in love with their music after I saw them live. Must see show! A hundred thumbs up!
it seemed as though there were many sound issues: the lead singer's guitar was buzzing and the back up vocalist was out of tune upwards of half the time. whether the latter was due to poor monitors or poor vocal skills, i can't say. the mix was poor for the majority of the show, including instances when the keyboard was drowning out the other instruments, save for the drums, and instances when the bass and secondary guitar weren't heard at all. i couldn't hear the choir at any point, and it did seem that they weren't entirely sure what they were supposed to be doing either. i imagine that the album is a little tricky to reproduce live, but the show was poorly executed which is unfortunate because i really like their music.
Loved, absolutely loved this night at the Fonda. Great venue, awesome vibes, fantastic bands!!
Attention bands who are rising fast aka, Alt-J. The next time you are on stage and you hear a hideous buzz in the mix, or the next time your monitoring is so bad you can't sing in harmony (and we all know you can), PLEASE stop the show, fix the problem and then continue. So let me clarify, this review is poor because the sound for the show was the worst I have heard in a long time. I go to many many shows. Overall, live sound has gotten much better in the last 7-8 years but this was the engineer's opinion of good sound. It was straight-up FAILURE. The ground buzz penetrating the mix throughout the whole show was unacceptable and worthy of a ticket-refund. Alt-J struggled to deliver a decent show and thankfully 'Fitzpleasure', was loud enough to overcome the buzz and was thoroughly enjoyed. That being said, I love Alt-J. I will see them again and I know it will sound great because they had this experience and maybe one of them is reading this. You guys are going places...duh, so please get some stage techs and a solid live sound guy and a manager who will ROLL some f'n heads when the tech is killing the show and make sure it is fixed before moving on. Your fans love you enough to chill for 5 minutes while a buzzing fridge is taken out of the mix.
