About

Like their band name, the multi-faceted sound of British indie rockers Alt-J (∆) requires a bit of explaining. The name derives from the combination of keys that results in a delta sign (∆) on Mac computers; the sound – a combination of folk-pop, skittering polyrhythms, and soaring falsetto harmonies – results in happy critics and even happier listeners.  The quartet formed in 2007 in a Leeds Metropolitan University dorm room, and the constraints of recording demos in a quiet study environment heavily influenced their hushed, intricate approach to indie rock. Their 2012 debut An Awesome Wave received the Mercury Prize, Britain’s most prestigious music award, and launched the band to indie stardom with singles “Breezeblocks” and “Fitzpleasure.” Alt-J are on tour in 2013, and ticket buyers can be sure that no matter how big the venue, the band will deliver the intimate live concert they’ve become known for.

    Harmonic Genre Busting Sound

by SunnyChicago73 on 11/22/23The Salt Shed - Chicago

From the short simple songs of pure vocal harmonics to the twists and turns that seem to move from a modern Gregorian chant, to folk, to techno beats, this show is a delight and visually brilliant against the Salt Shed industrial surrounds.

    Beautiful show but too short.

by Ferrer on 11/21/23The Salt Shed - Chicago

Loved the show and the audio quality but it was too short. Literally one hour and a half. Cmon I needed at least 4 more songs.

    So good

by Cristina on 11/21/23The Salt Shed - Chicago

This was honestly one of my favorite shows. Playing the entire “an awesome wave” album was such a great idea. Truly amazing concert!

    Good but…

by AD on 11/18/23White Oak Music Hall - Downstairs - Houston

They performed great and I liked that they were authentic in their performance. However I think the value of seeing them live was diminished somewhat because they didn’t do anything different sonically from their albums. I guess a little more theatre in their performance would have been nice.

Excellent show! Loved how much they love their fans!

by Eskimo Bill on 11/18/23White Oak Music Hall - Downstairs - Houston

I’ve loved alt-J for years! Always wanted to see them perform live, and they did not disappoint. Of course, above all, they delivered most of their biggest hits—well crafted music with clever lyrics. Their stage presence was awesome—not hyper, but energetic and highly entertaining. Their tech—sound and particularly ingenious lighting—was extremely well done. Another thing that stood out was how much they love their fans and their fans love them. Several times you could hardly hear the band’s voices because of the crowd singing along with them. Really, really enjoyed it. I plan to be there next time they’re around!

We saw Alt J for the second time. This time was amazing and so intimate. Really one of the best shows I’ve attended.

Every time I see Alt J I am more impressed with the quality of their performances. Easily one of my favorite bands to see live! Can’t wait till the next show.

    Amazing

by ALT-J top fan on 11/17/23House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

The Venue was perfect...we had balcony seats and we felt so close to the stage. I have Never Missed Alt J when they come to Dallas Or Austin and by far the best show ever! I am a 57 Year old Grandmother of Two and likely the oldest person there except for my husband AND I was by far the most active. The only thing I didn't like about being in the balcony was NOBODY stood up and/or danced! I had to go up to the bar Area above and Dance so not to disturb the sleepy Patrons Around me! Looking at the Standing crowd below, they too seemed to be standing still. OH well, I guess Dancing at concerts is not a thing anymore but that's cool, I danced up top enough for the rest of the crowd. And About Alt J- they NEVER disappoint! Love Love love them!

    Not much there

    by Ry on 11/16/23

The three piece band played a pretty dull show in Houston. Which in part I attribute to typically poor sound quality at White Oak downstairs, but also the came with low energy and not a lot of effort to showcase their musical talent. While I don't expect a studio-produced session at a live show, you gotta put a bit more into barely playing the melody.

    Great atmosphere

by Joey on 11/16/23House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

I really enjoyed every aspect of the concert from the venue to the performances of both bands. I appreciate that the House of Blues has a bar/dining area where you can wait for the doors to open. Other indoor venues have you waiting outside standing around. Alt-J absolutely killed it with great crowd interaction and amazing audio quality.

    A live performance

by Elacog on 11/13/23Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater - Austin

First off, I LOVE Alt-J! However, this performance felt flat. Live performances are where the artists should showcase their musical talent/genius. While they did perform all the great songs, it felt like a straight radio performance. Many opportunities to expand the song or really get the crowd into the music were missed. Regardless, I’ll be back!

VIP - sound not so great

by Sound could be better on 11/13/23Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater - Austin

If you’re in VIP in the back you will not get the full concert experience. It’s far away and sound isn’t great. I wish they would pit speakers back there

    by Lauren on 10/25/23

Performed AMAZING and the visuals were so awesome!!! The color and lights made it even better. I was nervous they weren’t gonna be good live but man they were great. I would see them if they come to DC again. Every time actually.

alt-J puts on a fantastic show! I saw them on their The Dream Tour and it outstanding. I have tickets to see them again less than a year latter, and seriously considered getting tickets to see them two nights in a row. They’re that good.
