ALICE SMITH IN CONCERT:
When it comes to the legendary voices of soul and R&B, singer-songwriter [do we want a slash or hyphen? Doesn’t matter to me, just want to make sure we have a consistent rule] Alice Smith is right up there with the best of them. Ms. Smith cuts a commanding figure on stage, and her formidable presence is only intensified by the broad, powerful swath [right word? Are you trying to emphasize the range? I guess that’s covered with broad… How about “by her powerful, far-ranging voice” or something?] of her voice. Whether she's covering Cee Lo Green's "Fool for You" or mesmerizing with originals like "Baby," fans can expect big, beautiful things from Smith on her 2014 tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Raised splitting time between Washington, D.C. and a Georgia farm, Smith grew up immersed in gospel, soul, and R&B. An active singer while studying at Fordham University in New York, she made her album debut in 2006 with For Lovers, Dreamers, & Me, a nod to the line sung by Kermit in the Muppets' beloved 1979 song "Rainbow Connection." The album was a hit with critics, landing on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and sparking extensive touring. After taking some time off to raise her daughter and relocate to Los Angeles, Smith made a triumphant return with 2013's She, a genre-spanning collection of songs that will feature heavily on her highly anticipated 2014 tour.

Having seen her quite a few times over the last year, it was cool to see the show/setlist has been revised a little bit. Definitely a joy to watch her perform.

I love her unpredictability; the audience just hang on and enjoy the ride. She has a wonderful range and I like the fact that she isn't stuck in a genre box. You may hear some rock, pop, jazz. She is remarkably talented. One of her highlights? When she does the Ceelo Green cover, Fool For You. It doesn't get no better!!! I'm not a fan of the Howard Theater venue, however. This show will mark the last time I go there! Their seating policy is atrocious!!!

by Tigerbabysob on 12/8/13Bowery Ballroom - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5I have been lucky enough to be at a number of rock shows from when I was a teen where due to older friends with impeccable taste I was able to see several bands perform in tiny clubs just on the precipice of where their careers were about to take off.. There is an electricity in the air. You can feel it. This was one of those nights. I had seen Alice a few months prior at City Winery on a bill with Prince, this was the first time I had seen her do a full concert. She is something I have not experience in quite some time. Live she doesn't sing a song, she truly embodies it. Her voice was fantastic and an onstage charisma that was infectious. Her band was in the mold of an old school Stax-esque lineup and backed her with style. I don't know if you will get to see her in a venue like this much longer. I feel she is one of those acts now where they were your own little secret, they were yours but then everyone finds out and they are off to belong to the world. Off you go, Alice...

She was amazing from beginning to end! Her voice is so powerful that she sounds even better live. I had a great time. I attended by myself but the audience was so friendly and easy going I felt like I met friends for the night.
