About

AJJ IN CONCERT:

Phoenix folk-punk foursome AJJ brings plenty of fuzzed-out guitar and ebullient energy to the stage, but their funny and often-absurd lyrics are the real star of the show. The band's irreverent songs tackle everything from existentialism to STDs, and frontman Sean Bonnette delivers his incisive observations a mile a minute in concert. Fans know all the words to flippant favorites like "Brave As a Noun" and "Survival Song," and their energy is infectious as they shout along with Bonnette during the band's boisterous sets. Even if you don't know the lyrics, there's still lots to love about AJJ's shows –  the band is famous for their livewire energy, and their raw, adrenaline-filled performances are matched by a raucous response from the crowd. For those who like their indie rock with a side of humor, AJJ always puts on a killer show that's fun and full of hilarious lines.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

AJJ formed in 2004 under the name Andrew Jackson Jihad and released their debut album Candy Cigarettes & Cap Guns the following year. By 2006 they were a local scene staple, enjoying a loyal following and garnering plenty of praise from Phoenix print publications. They signed to Asian Man Records in 2007 and released their sophomore LP People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World, and in 2008 they headed out on the Make Punk Fun Again Tour alongside fellow punkers including The Queers and Lemuria. The next few years saw the band touring extensively while also maintaining a prolific release schedule that included 2009's Can't Maintain and 2011's Knife Man. For their fifth album, 2014's Christmas Island, the band teamed up with Grammy-winning producer John Congleton and explored a heavier, more distorted sound that resonated with fans. With their 2016 album The Bible 2 generating buzz, AJJ has fans ready and raring to rock out to their witty tunes in concert.

    Amazing!!!

by Sunny on 8/28/22Ace of Spades - Sacramento

This was only my second concert ever, and now I'm not sure if all future concerts will live up to this one. This was pretty much the best night ever. The crowd was so lively and the music was amazing! I can't wait for AJJ to come to Sacramento again

    Incredible!

by djcurr on 8/25/16Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

The opening bands, ROAR and John John Congleton and The Nighty Nite, were both awesome. If you've never heard of them I would HIGHLY recommend that you look them up. AJJ was simply incredible. They fed off of the crowd and the crowd fed off of them. It was one of the best nights of my life.

    Amazing Show!

    by nbates631 on 11/18/15Masquerade - Atlanta

I had a blast at the Andrew Jackson Jihad concert at the Masquerade in Atlanta. They put on an amazing show and sound even better live than they do on their albums! Definitely recommend seeing them if you have the chance.

It was a fantastic lineup. While AJJ was great, it was the Smith Street Band from Australia who stole the show. Lead singer Wil Wagner's passion shined through his performance. Jeff Rosenstock was ace as well.

    Insanity!

by Curdle on 3/24/15Royale Boston - Boston

The crowd was diverse and in mostly good spirits, the opening acts were fantastic and varied. AJJ killed it as usual, and it was interesting to see how different sean is from his persona. Would recommenced to anyone with any interest in the genre to see these guys live.

This was my second time seeing AJJ and honestly it was a bit of a letdown compared to their last show in Boston. They played a pretty slow lineup of songs and skipped many of their classics. It felt like the crowd wasn't really into the show--I think many people including myself were expected a loud show with lots of dancing. For the encore they played one song and it was a cover. The performance was good, they are very talented musicians and really wowed everyone when they played at the Sinclair. This time they made poor song choices with detracted from the overall impression.

Andrew Jackson Jihad - Boston Concert

    by Youngsnot56 on 3/24/15Royale Boston - Boston

I purchased tickets for my son and daughter and my daughter's boyfriend. We traveled from Western New York for t hem to attend the concert. They were so pleased with the whole experience. They loved all of the opening bands and were amazed with Andrew Jackson Jihad. Take the time and go and you won't be disappointed.

    AJJ et al. CRUSHED it!

by derstander on 6/23/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

Best show I've seen in a long time. AJJ, Cheap Girls, and Dogbreth absolutely crushed it.

AJJ - true folk punk absurdity

by Risiblerecreant on 6/19/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

Opening acts, dogbreth and cheap girls, didn't have compatible music. Pretty popish and generic. From the mezzanine, the ground floor looked like a very large can of sardines. But ajj was all I hoped they would be and more. I hadn't listened to their new album like I had planned to, so I was worried I wouldn't know the music, but they made a very conscious effort to include some of their older stuff, which I really appreciated. The energy was phenomenal, and the music was even better. If there was a sixth star, I'd click it. 12/10 would reccomend.

    Andrew Jackson Jihad was phenomenal.

by ScottWatts on 6/12/14Masquerade - Atlanta

Absolutely loved seeing these guys play live. They've got a lot of charisma, they entertain the crowd with silly jokes while setting up or tuning. The only downside to seeing AJJ at the Masquerade was that the show was in their "Hell" section. It was about as hot as the name of the section implies. It isn't well ventilated and many punk kids like to not bathe or wear deodorant. But that didn't stop me from enjoying the show. Even met Sean and Ben before the show and they're humble and welcoming guys. Dogbreath is a band I had never heard of before. I had no idea what to expect from them. They turned out to be pretty damn awesome. I would like to see them play live again eventually. Cheap Girls was kind of a let down. The lead singer kept changing levels through much of the set and never ended up sounding right to me. The lyrics were drowned out and the music never seemed right. Maybe it was just kind of an off night. It was a show on a Monday after all.

    Rejoice! Andrew Jackson Jihad!

by MobBarley on 6/12/14Masquerade - Atlanta

AJJ go the extra mile for their live experience. Between taking the time to play their own secondary instruments, their raw energy, and completely unapologetic sense of humor, I'm hard-pressed to think of a band that will entertain you quite like they do. Their on-stage pranks are second to none, and the music is equally exciting. Their pacing of the set was perfect. Not too many fast punky songs, not too many slow jams. As for the opening acts, I really enjoyed Dogbreth, who I'd never heard of before, but whose sound is really interesting, with indie/punk filled with 70s rock snippets here and there. Meanwhile, the band Cheap Girls, with their monotone set list and contrast of overly energetic drummer and so-drunk-I-can-barely-stand-and-perform bassist/vocalist, leave much to be desired. Every song sounded almost identical, and they don't give you much reason to keep listening. Fortunately, Dogbreth and AJJ more than make up for their slack performance.
