  • Amazing performance from Aida and mariachi

by Ale Marco on 5/23/22UTEP Magoffin Auditorium - El PasoRating: 5 out of 5

What an amazing performance from Aida and the mariachi. Her voice is like no other and her passion is reflected on stage. The venue was intimate, so her voice was appreciated so much more. Cannot wait to see her again.

  • Among the Legends

by El Jefe on 5/22/22UTEP Magoffin Auditorium - El PasoRating: 5 out of 5

If you regret not seeing Lola Beltran, Flor Silvestre, Lucha Villa it’s not to late to see a legend. Aida Cuevas performance will take you back in time and space to a 1950’s Chihuahua celebration. I could almost smell the wet dirt' sotol and chicarones. Then accompanying mariachis were excellent. The only negative comment is on the acoustics which were amateur. The base was overwhelming and artificial. When will sound engineers learn that not all music should be treated like pop music with pounding base?

  • Well worth your money.

Venue wonderful. Caliber of musicians was insane. The amount of different different musical groups was wonderful. Mariachi, rock band, CSUN jazz band, string musicians was unbelievable. Was not expecting all of this and the singers. Probably the only Performing arts center in L.A. that charges nothing for parking and that offers a shuttle to and from venue. Staff was very patient and polite. I drove from Oxnard, Ca. Easy to get there and no problem finding theatre or parking lot. Thank you CSUN!

  • Disappointment En Espanol

by Michael on 10/26/21The Soraya (The Valley's Center for the Performing Arts) - NorthridgeRating: 3 out of 5

I have been to the Soraya several times over the past few years (back when it was named the VAPC) and was so excited to attend my first indoor concert since pandemic lockdown. As a musician, I was impressed with the quality of the players who were as good as one could imagine. There were four overwhelming problems and I was not the only one to experience them. The first was that the show seemed quite brief in its two segments given the breadth of material from which the musical director had to choose. The second is that one of the primary vocalists (Luciana Souza) was woefully unprepared and of shockingly weak voice (pitch issues, lack of confidence, etc). Anyone paying tribute to Linda Ronstadt requires intense musical chops and she was not up to the task in any way. It is sad as I know Ms. Souza's work with Jazz ensembles and she has a great instinct. Perhaps she was frightened on stage or simply not connected to the style she was being forced to sing. It appeared from the MC that she might have been a last minute addition which indicates that someone else was slated to sing her part and canceled. The final element missing was the necessary backing vocals (harmony, doubling, etc) required to truly flesh out some of the great rock songs. When Will I be Loved stood out most in that regard and felt empty even though La Marisoul gave it her all as usual. With all of the fine musicians and vocalists onstage, it would be fascinating to know whose decision it was to eliminate those much needed backing vocals. The final issue revolves around song selection. As amazing as Aida Cuevas is, was there a reason that she chose not to cover Ronstadt’s most popular Spanish language songs, La Cigarra and La Charreada. I would again imagine that this was the musical director’s choice; but, it left many in the audience not connecting to the more obscure material. Personally, I love all of it; but, still found this an odd decision. The point is that I had high expectations along with the two friends for whom I purchased great seats in the center/right Orchestra sections and we were all severely disappointed by the program. While I can not request a refund, please know that I feel badly about driving 15+ miles in traffic to have had this disappointing experience. Were it a free concert, this review would never have been posted. . .alas. . .it was not.

My favorite ranchera music singer, her powerful voice and interpretation makes me feel all emotions at the same time, happiness and crying all at once, Aida Cuevas is the best. I can’t miss this concert.

  • Great Entertainer

by BgBdVdoDd on 10/23/16Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 5 out of 5

I wasn't sure what to expect as this was my first time seeing her. She was incredible. Her expressions and mannerisms could translate her songs if you did not understand the words. She took the time to talk to the audience as if on Storyteller. I look forward to seeing her again at any venue....unless I am fortunate to see her at such a great venue as Valley Performing Arts Center.

  • Simply amazing

The whole evening was extremely exhilarating. The performance by Aida Cuevas and Mariachi la Reyna de Los Angeles was wonderful.

  • Pleasant Surprise all around

by BurbankMike on 10/19/16Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first time to the CSUN Performing Arts Center. It was impressive. Nice facility with good sound and pleasant staff. Free parking with admission! I brought my family with two teenagers and while we were on the younger side demographically compared to the audience, everyone enjoyed themselves. Aida's voice was magnificent and the backing of Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles was on point throughout. The Queen of Ranchera music did not disappoint

  • Aida Cuevas -Reyna del Mariachi did not disappoint

by RCSR on 10/19/16Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 5 out of 5

The concert started at exactly 7:30 and the mariachi music echoed through the walls of the valley performance art center and didn't stop for the next two and a half hours. It was a night full of music delivered by an all female Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles who beautifully accompanied the unforgettable vocal talents of the great Aida Cuevas. Her style and love of Mexico truly pay tribute to the culture that as she stated is more popular and loved in the United States that even in Mexico. The concert itself drew emotions out of people who periodically cheered, cried and joyfully validated the meaning of music by singing along to the never forgotten traditional and new mariachi songs and ballads. Music that warms your heart and makes you yearn for a yesterday that remains alive through the music. Beautiful night delivered by Ms Cuevas and Las Reynas de Los Angeles!

  • OMG! The BEST

    by Alejandra456 on 11/17/15Auditorium Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Ok...... so when you're in a crowd and people mention Alejandro Fernandez as an example of Mariachi music, my heart sinks. It is not that Alejandro doesn't have the voice and talent to sign Mariachi, it is just that it is not where his heart is. Alejandro has focused so much of his career to Balada and Pop that he has gotten far away from the authenticity of Mariachi like the oldies, but always goodies. Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Javier Solis, Pedro Negrete, y mujere como Flor Silvestre, la Se~nora Lola Beltran, etc. When I bought the tickets, I was afraid I would see the same low-tasting singers and performances and fortunately, I was proven wrong! Aida Cuevas and the Mariachi Reyna De Los Angeles, did a magnificent job and bringing in some of the staples and some of the less known, yet culturally rich mariachi songs. A phenomenal performance by both. If anything I have to add, is for the Mariachi Reyna De Los Angeles. I encourage the women of the Mariachi to really give it their all in their solo performances. Some shined through more than others and a few held back. You're part of an ensemble, yes, but the solo is for your performance to outshine the rest of the stage! Take it on and give the audience the pleasure of seeing a whole-hearted performance. I know you all have it in you to do that and mesmerize the audience. A great job to all. I loved it all!

  • Not my rodeo but this was just a most experience

by Calimex on 11/17/15Auditorium Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I went without expectation as I'm not a fan of mariachi. You might be asking than why go well my child was part of program and couldn't missed that. When I purchase the tickets i thought it was only worth b of my child but seriously I never thought about the rest of the program. The bottom line is that it brought me back to my roots and I'm glad I gave it a tried. I didn't know who Aida Cuevas or the Angeles mariachi was and is not bc they aren't famous but rather because of my difference in taste of music. They both were awesome and a lifetime experience. Brought memories tears of joy of my mother taste of music. As a women I also took it as empowerement. If this is your first time like my is a superb experience that you should tried.
