ACC Men's Basketball Tournament

Every March, the Atlantic Coast Conference gives basketball fans a taste of the madness to come. The ACC Men's Basketball Tournament features some of the best teams in college hoops, and the winner earns both an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and official recognition as the best team in the conference. The ACC Tournament is held in different arenas along the eastern seaboard each year.

ACC Men's Basketball Tournament History

The Atlantic Coast Conference was formed in 1953, when seven schools broke away from the Southern Conference as the SoCon was trying to de-emphasize football. Former SoCon member Virginia joined soon thereafter, and since then the ACC has grown to 15 members, including non-football member Notre Dame. The ACC Tournament began in the conference's inaugural season in 1954, with North Carolina State winning their first of 10 tournaments by defeating Wake Forest 82-80 at Raleigh's Reynolds Coliseum. The presence of the state of North Carolina looms large, with the first 22 tournaments taking place in the Tar Heel State, and 54 out of 69 in total, and with the state's four schools UNC, Duke, NC State and Wake Forest combining for 54 tournament victories.

Some of the greatest names in college basketball have starred in the ACC Men's Basketball Tournament, with UNC's Bob McAdoo and James Worthy, Maryland's Len Bias and Wake Forest's Tim Duncan all winning its MVP award. Seven teams that have won the ACC tournament have gone on to win the Final Four recently the 2017 UNC Tar Heels took this honor. In 2019, Duke won their 21st tournament championship with help from tourney MVP Zion Williamson, as they beat Florida State 73-63 in the final at Charlotte's Spectrum Center. Duke went on to reclaim the championship once again in 2023.

Had a great time. Was easy to get to, had great seats. Was concerned about General Admission Seating ... but we got there about an hour before the games started and had great mid-court, aisle seats about 12 rows up... Great View. Very enjoyable !!!!

    Opening Day

by BoibbyLlama on 3/13/15Greensboro Coliseum Complex - Greensboro

It was disappointing to only have 2 games instead of 3. Then not knowing which teams would play the first day makes it hard.

ACC men's basketball game. ..shorted one game

by PhDADL on 3/13/15Greensboro Coliseum Complex - Greensboro

The game atmosphere was good, however, being shorted one game was not cool. I am not sure if I received credit for that. I won't attend the men's tournament again.

    ACC Tornament First-Timer

by dmuzikmom on 3/15/14Greensboro Coliseum Complex - Greensboro

If you love ACC basketball, you MUST go to the tournament at least once. My husband and I attended Opening Day and Session 1. Opening Day tickets were $35 (plus Ticketmaster fees and taxes of about $13, so about $48 each) for General Admission seats. We bought our Session 1 tickets online from an individual--$65 for 2 tickets--good buy, but seats were in the rafters. We got great seats for Opening Day, arriving an hour before gametime. Food was good for arena food with great selection--hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken strips, BBQ sandwiches, Ben and Jerry's ice cream, popcorn, etc.

    opening day of acc tournament

by dmost on 3/15/14Greensboro Coliseum Complex - Greensboro

I wish I had been given the option to purchase better seats. General admission was like being a 2nd class citizen. The fan fest while free was not worth arriving early. I expected good food vendors at least. The 3 games where torture to watch in such cramped conditions. Had the competition been better it may have taken my mind off of being packed like sardines looking at all the lower empty seats we weren't allowed to fill for 6 grueling hours. I was glad I got to experience it once with my son. It will take a lot to get me to do it again. Also will never do e-tickets again. I could not get them to come up on my phone at the entry. I finally had to go to will call for help.

By arriving early, we sat in center court Section 9. Great seats, and enjoyed Scotty's concert. Music was a little loud but a good concert.
