A Night With Janis Joplin on Tour

Legendary blues belter Janis Joplin passed away in 1970 at the age of 27. A Night With Janis Joplin captures the singer's energy, heart and ability to wring the entire spectrum of human emotions out of a single wail. The musical is structured like a Joplin show from 1970 might be, though there are twists of magical-realism — singers who influenced her like Aretha Franklin and Bessie Smith show up onstage beside her, while her between-song banter gives audiences a hint of the wounded humanity behind her towering voice.

A Night With Janis Joplin Background

Janis Joplin's bellow was one of the defining voices of the 1960s. Solo and with her band Big Brother & the Holding Company, the Texas-born singer (who also went by Pearl) blazed a trail through rock, fusing blues and fuzz-covered guitars in a thrilling way as she dug down and sang of deeply felt pain. She rocketed to fame after a torrid appearance at 1967's storied Monterey Pop Festival, where Big Brother was on the bill alongside performers like Otis Redding, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Who. Joplin's innate knowledge of the blues and powerful voice made her one of the most singular figures of the ‘60s rock scene, and she eventually split from Big Brother in 1969. On October 4, 1970, Joplin died of a heroin overdose, and her final album Pearl came out in January of the following year. A Night With Janis Joplin, which premiered in 2013 at New York City's Lyceum Theatre, brings Joplin's artistry and songcraft to generations of listeners who were too young to experience her live. Written by director and playwright Randy Johnson, whose recent musical about rock pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe Shout Sister Shout! is currently touring the United States, A Night WIth Janis Joplin fuses her unforgettable songs with banter that's witty and ponderous in equal measures, showcasing the woman who made the music so unforgettable.

A Night with Janis Joplin was fabulous!

by Zinner on 3/3/16American Theatre - Hampton

This was the best show I have seen in a very long time! All of the musicians and singers were great, but Mary Bridget Davies was phenomenal. She was Janis in speaking voice, mannerisms and dress, but when she sang, it was if Janis was in the building. I would go see this show again right now if I could! If you can go, do - you will thoroughly enjoy it!

    Music takes you back...

    by Fran60 on 3/2/16Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

All the performers have wonderful talent. Having said that: look forward to hearing the music of blues and 1960's rock n' roll done RIGHT. The Janis Joplin performer was amazing and her support vocalists were stars in their own right. The band had serious chops - loved the guitarist and keyboard! Do not attend this show if you want to know "the real" Janis Joplin - she wasn't there. The story line was weak and at times, contrived. The gritty edge of sex, drugs and rock n. roll was well scrubbed and only hints remained. I guess that's what I'd like to remember: "Just the music..."

    A Night with Janis

by BostonJBB on 3/1/16Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

I have a friend who saw the show a year or so back in NYC. He told me all about the show with a glowing review. Based on this I had very high expectations going into the show. I can honestly saw the show exceeded all my expectations. The entire cast was sensational, a flawless production. Extremely talented backing musicians. All the vocalists were amazing. For about two hours we ( the entire audience ) was transported back in time, and for just a moment we were treated to a time and event that one can dream about. Janis was back on stage for us, sadly only for a few hours. If this show comes near you, do not miss it. You WILL NOT be disappointed. Come back to BOSTON and I will be there with family and friends in tow.

    Great Show worth seeing

by JoeDev on 3/1/16Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

The show was great the time travel the various cover artists and the incite to some of Janis's artistic influences were enlightening. How evre the light man controlling the set lighting was talking over the whole show we had to ask him several times to please be quieter. Other than that it was a great night

    Davies channels Joplin

    by VintageFan01 on 3/1/16Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

This show was such a surprise! The talented cast had the audience from the very beginning. We all know the sad story of Janis Joplin's drug addiction. This is not about that and I was relieved to not have to suffer that loss. The story is of female blues singers that influenced Janis Joplin shedding light on where her passion came from. It's a tall order to portray someone so famous with such a distinctive voice and Mary Bridget Davies delivers! The rest of the cast and the band deliver a talented performance as well. I would have immediately bought tickets to see another performance but alas it was a one night only performance.

Unforgettable! One of the best shows yet.

    by NancyCC65 on 3/1/16Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

A night with Janis Joplin was, by far one of the best shows yet. It is so hard to believe that we have lost such a talent, but A Night with Janis Joplin gave us a taste of what it was like to hear a legend sing. And oh did she sing! A note to other people in the audience, get there on time and get in your seat before the show starts. Nothing is worse than having to miss part of such a great show because people needed to get past us to get to their seats. Please think about the people you are disrupting because you were not in your seat on time. And then stay to the end! You know they bring the house lights up, and you know the traffic is still going to be bad, so sit down, enjoy the show. You paid for it and how could you miss such a great singer? Loved it, Loved it, Loved it!!!

    Janis reincarnated

by Anonymous on 3/1/16Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

The music and background story were fascinating. There were "appearances" by Nina Simone, Etta James, Billie Holiday showing the roots of her music.

A Night with Janis Joplin was terrific!

by mamacyn on 3/1/16Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

We thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent show, theater was packed and everyone was having a great time. Mary Bridget Davies not only looks a lot like Janis, but her voice is eerily similar. I wanted more which is probably one of the best things you can say about a show. Highly recommend, it was very very good.

    Wow!

by Socky on 3/1/16Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

This show was a surprise in that it is not just someone covering Janis Joplin's hits, but it's more of a broadway show. There are other performers acting as those who influenced Janis from an early age and therefore inspired her singing of the blues. One of them, who portrays Aretha Franklin, is just amazing. Well, all of them are amazing really. The girl who sings as Janis is just incredible. You would swear you are watching and listening to Janis herself. The audience really got into it. All in all, it's just a phenomenal show that should not be missed by anyone who grew up in the 60's.

Rocking and rolling time flashing back to the 60s and 70s with Janis Joplin. The actress sounded exactly like her, so she was easy to believe.

    A Night With Janis

    by Natalieb5 on 2/29/16American Theatre - Hampton

I didn't get to see the play. It was a gift for my mom. She loved it and so did my dad. They could not stop talking about it. They said it was like Janis Joplin was in the room. It was sold out.

    Janis Joplin show was awesome

by Soulli on 2/28/16American Theatre - Hampton

Relived my late teen years. What a power house of music. I yelled, screamed, & hollowed ! Took me two days to recoup! Not as young as I use to be. No one there under sixty, too bad! Our young people today don't know what they are missing by not knowing of Janis Joplin . The cast did an outstanding job! Didn't want the night to end!
