About

Norwegian new-wavers a-ha have achieved remarkable worldwide fame over four decades, and for good reason. Not only are they one of the most influential synth-pop acts to come out of the early '80s, but they set a major precedent for music video innovation with their partially animated "Take On Me" visual, an MTV mainstay at the time.

The trio initially formed in the early 1980s when guitarist Pål Waaktaar-Savoy and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, formerly of Bridges, teamed up with vocalist Morten Harket. Together, the trio left for London and signed to WEA. Their debut single, "Take On Me," became a smash hit in the United Kingdom, thanks in part to Harket's octave-climbing falsetto. Over in the States, the song's rotoscoping video, which blended pencil-sketch animation with live action, earned heavy rotation on the still relatively young MTV.

A-ha circled back to the charts with their second single, "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.," which went to No. 1 in the UK and peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1986, a-ha's success culminated in a Grammy nomination in the Best New Artist category, though they lost out to Sade.

Meanwhile, a-ha's debut album, Hunting High and Low, was a bestseller, going triple platinum in the UK and platinum in the U.S. To date, it has sold 11 million copies worldwide.

In 1986, a-ha released their sophomore album, Scoundrel Days, featuring the singles "I've Been Losing You," "Cry Wolf," "Maybe, Maybe," and "Manhattan Skyline." It sold more than six million copies worldwide and peaked at No. 2 on the European Top 100 Albums chart.

A-ha followed up with their third studio album, Stay on These Roads, released in 1988. It featured the title track to the 1987 James Bond film The Living Daylights and has sold more than 4.2 million copies worldwide.

The band's fourth studio album, East of the Sun, West of the Moon, came out in 1990 and featured a cover of the Everly Brothers' "Crying in the Rain." In 1991, the band hit a Guinness World Record for biggest rock audience attendance at the Rock in Rio II festival, which drew a crowd of 198,000.

A-ha released their fifth album, Memorial Beach, in 1993, featuring the single "Dark is the Night for All," which peaked at No. 19 in the UK. At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, a-ha performed two concerts and wrote a song for the games: "Shapes That Go Together." That same year, a-ha went on hiatus, and the band members pursued individual projects.

In 1998, a-ha reunited for the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Their reunion eventually led to the recording of a new album, 2000's Minor Earth Major Sky, plus an international tour. In 2003, a-ha released a live album from their 2002 tour, titled How Can I Sleep with Your Voice in My Head. This was followed by a 2005 album, Analogue, which earned the band their first Top 10 hit in the UK since 1988.

After 2005's Analogue, a-ha released three more albums: 2009's Foot of the Mountain, 2015's Cast in Steel, and 2022's True North (coming in October 2022). In 2021, the documentary a-ha: The Movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Though a-ha remain best known in the U.S. for their first-ever single, the trio is by far the most successful pop act to come from their home country of Norway. They have influenced numerous contemporary pop performers, most notably Chris Martin of Coldplay and Pitbull, the latter who featured a sampling of "Take On Me" in his 2013 single with Christina Aguilera, "Feel This Moment."

An A-Ha moment last will last forever

by marnieeg on 5/7/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York

Simply put, this was the best concert I have ever been to. I have waited 25 years to see A-HA live and this was a dream come true! Morten's voice hasn't changed a note. It was mythical. Like I was in a dream. I have never felt as moved seeing a live show. Mags was spot on working the keyboard like it was an extension of his own body. Pal delivered a non-stop performance with the trio making every sound sweeter than the next. I can't wait to see them again tonight. I will be in heaven all over again!

A-Ha ...An Unforgetable Night Of Nostalgia

by Johnnybeatles on 5/7/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York

It was great to see A-ha back in the States for the first time in awhile , the concert was amazing playing most of the songs from their first two debut albums "Hunting High & Low" & "Scoundrel Days" , as well as more recent albums such as "Minor Earth , Major Sky" , and couple of tracks off "Life Lines" and "Foot Of The Mountain" their latest endeavor . Morten was right on track with his beautiful vocals as well as Paul & Magne . A great night was had by all who attended The Nokia Theater on Thursday night in New York . The only sad point of the evening was the realisation that they are breaking up and this will probably be the last time to see them together .. But, I do say congradulation's and thanks for an amzing twenty five year career of great and unforgetable music .

    A-ha Rocked!

by 80sTeen on 5/7/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York

Great evening from start to finish - begining with the talented Sondre Lerche to a phenomenal set by A-ha. It was a bit toasty in the venue, and a couple of sound glitches were promptly addressed without stopping the show. But these things are bound to happen at any live event. Otherwise, the sound was powerful and clear, the video montage was exciting and enhancing to the show, Morten's voice soared for the most part, and A-ha played together dynamically and beautifully. The songs performed were plentiful - an eclectic selection from their discography to which the audience responded enthusiastically. All-in-all, a crowd-pleasing performance in every way.

    WOW !!

by axomoo on 5/7/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York

I went to the show when they came to NY last time and was sad that they only had one US show. This show was worth the wait! The set was phenomenal as well as the lighting effects. Mags, Pal and Morten were on their game! I loved how they re-arranged the songs and no words can describe the vocals. It hasn't aged at all and was on perfect pitch. Thank you so much for a wonderful evening and 25 years worth of memories...

    A-ha!

by NYCRocks on 5/7/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York

Superb show. I never understood how this band could not get a deal in the US, although they are huge everywhere else (that's how I discovered they continued on after Hunting High and Low; I was in a record store in Paris on a vacation, and saw a couple of their albums). They were totally mismarketed as a pop band from the start. I'm sorry they are splitting up but glad to have seen them again after 24 years.

    Unforgettable!

by ahafan on 5/7/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York

This was amazing. They played a great show starting with the newest material first, ending with Take on Me. Great mix of hits and album tracks. The venue was just ok but the crowd was really good to match the band.

by Mharket on 5/7/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York

Almost 20 years wait for this moment. Travel from Puerto Rico just to see A-ha. I'm happy, an amazing concert. A-ha looked fantastic, NO time has passed, Morten look very handsome. They sang their hits and did not expect. Hunting High And Low, Scoundrel Foot of the mountain, Scoundrel days, Take on me and Summer move on, some of the hits were heard that night. I love them, miss them and thank you for an unforgettable night for me. Love Morten, Mags and Paul. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the best bands ever

by Talock on 2/3/10Nokia Theater - New York

I've been an a-ha fan ever since: "I fear the crazed and lonely looks the mirror is sending me these days"; and anyone who dismissed them as a one hit wonder wasn't really paying attention. It’s great they’re quitting and moving on to other stuff, as opposed to just fading out. And I do hope I get to see them on this last tour.
