Rather slow with most lines coming from a narrator. Too expensive for the quality of the acting,
Several of my family members have scenes from the movie memorized. We saw the play and loved it. They even managed to allude to the Bumpus's dogs - wondered how that would be handled - and suggest a car on stage for the "Oh F-u-d-g-e" scene. The only thing we missed was the Chinese restaurant version of Deck The Halls and the chopping off of the duck's head. Liked the addition of a love interest for Ralphie. Would recommend the show for mixed generation groups of theater-goers. It is not easy to bring a well-known movie to the stage. Bravo to the splendid team of actors!
The show was very well done. It was much like the movie. A cute Christmas show to see with the whole family.
Some cute moments, creative staging, and pretty much does faithfully adhere to the cult classic movie. But some features of the production are annoying and distracting. Why is there focus on a very irritating sub-plot of a persistent and snooty female classmate trying to establish a romance with Ralphie ? Why is the narrator on stage and not simply heard somewhere unseen as in the movie ? Also too bad the Chinese restaurant scene is completely omitted. Worst of all, the role of Ralphie is badly miscast. This kid looks six feet tall and about 14 years old and even at his most animated, shows almost flat affect throughout. In the movie, Peter Billingsley's characterization of Ralphie is clearly that of an 8 or 9-year old little boy who is irresistably full of life in everything he says and does. In the local production, 3 roles deserve mention as commendable : the mother ; the teacher ; and Ralphie's little brother.
The play was an amazing portrait of the movie. The narration was exceptional along with "Ralphie". If you've seen the movie...the play is as good!
Even though it was something that is viewed on television stations during the Christmas season, it was refreshing to see it live on stage. Very well done!
A Christmas Story is my favorite movie of the Christmas season. The play was as good as the movie. I think my favorite character is the mom. I guess she reminds me of myself. The narrator was fantastic. He really made the play.
Excellent overall will certainly see again and take friends
We have watched the movie every year around Christmas time. We were wondering how this would be staged. We were very pleased and enjoyed this as a stage play. The actors did a excellant job with the characters.
The show was fantastic. My family and I had a wonderful time and can't wait to see it again next year.
I'm one of those rare people who had never seen the movie in all of these years...I'm a "It's a Wonderful Life" type of gal" but it was done wonderfully. I would highly recommend it to my friends and family.
SOME GOOD ACTING...NARRATOR DID A FANTASTIC JOB. A LOT OF MEMORIZATION FOR HIM.
As a former big city guy, I expected a lackluster experience of mediocre local actors, but this was absolutely NOT the case. Totally flaw free performances, great music, good audio, wow lighting and sets...this is the real deal in Raleigh!?! Maybe I should rethink this beautiful southern gem because this is BETTER than most off-Broadway shows costing twice as much! Bravo!
One of our favorite Christmas movies is The Christmas Story. My daughter and I were very excited to be able to go to the play. It was everything we hoped it would be and more. It followed the movie very closely and all the players were cast perfectly. It was a most enjoyable afternoon.
They did a great job translating the 80's classic movie to a live stage performance. The set really supported the story. The cast was great, especially the narrator who played multi roles. The only negative was the lighting units on the stage caused an obstructed view in our front row seats. Lesson learned....sit back a few rows.
My husband and I took our 12-year-old grandson and we all thoroughly enjoyed the show. The actors were wonderful (especially the grown-up Ralph) and the production was quite good. We also like the displays outside the theater of old fashioned Christmas trees. This play is perfect for anyone wanting to do something special and fun for the holidays.
The play was well-acted, no complaints there. It would have been better, however, if the scriptwriters had followed the movie a little bit less closely - I understand that it's hard to stray much when you're dealing with something as iconic as this movie, but on the other hand it made the play almost too predictable and less enjoyable. Recommended if you haven't seen the movie.
Raleigh's production of A Christmas Story is not to be missed! I'm not a huge fan of the movie (my husband is), but I prefer the stage show. Cast is great! Mother and Father are spot on!! Sets are great; all kid performers fantastic. Particular fan of the little guy from DUNN. Go Harnett County! Only disappointments: no Chinese restaurant singers and "soft glow of electric sex" line not included. We truly hope that this show makes a permanent home with A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker at Progress Energy Center in December! The perfect Christmas Trio for the performing arts. A must see.
I was amazed at the way the scenery and action replicated the movie. All of the best scenes were included. The actorseven looked like the movie characters as well as performing like them. I thoroughly enjoyed this play.
