lovely moving show with lots of interplay between artists
This was, hands down, the best concert I've ever attended. So many first-rate musicians, effortless harmonies and collaborations, great songs to work with, and an outpouring of affection for the late Kate McGarrigle.
This was a well planned and well thought out tribute to a wonderful singer, songwriter and performer. Presented mostly by her sister, children and extended family, the evening was made richer by some surprise guests including Nora Jones and Emmy Lou Harris. The songs were all Kate's and they were done by a rotating and ever shifting combination of performers making things loving, lively and interesting. Altogether a lovely experience. Kate would have loved it!!
heartbreaking and uplifting i felt as if i was allowed into the family. I didn't want it to end and i wanted to go back the next day and see the show all over again.
Quite possibly the greatest performance I have been to. So many talented people. I went in a Rufus Wainwright fan and came away with so much more! The performance lasted for over 3 hours and kept me amazed, emotionally charged and wanting more after I left. It is so moving to see such love and adoration for a beloved singer/songwriter who, even after her death, continues to give so much through her family and friends. It was an uplifting and bittersweet evening!
It was an amazing concert with high level performers.
This was a three hour festival of folk songs composed and/or performed by Kate McGarrigle's extended family of talented musicians, including her sister Anna and Kate's children, Martha and Rufus Wainwright. Kate died in 2010 of sarcoma. This was a memorial tribute to raise funds for a foundation started in her honor to promote sarcoma research. The show never lagged. Vocal/instrumental talent abounded.
The only way this celebration of Kate McGarrigle and her songs could have been better is if it had gone on longer - and it was 3 hours long as it was! The talent and emotions of the performers were amazing. What an ensemble! I first saw Krystle in KC when she was just graduating from high school. I knew then that she was something special, and I'm so glad she is having the opportunities she is having. I, too, wish I were part of the Wainright-McGarrigle clan. I look forward to the documentary when it comes out. In the meantime, find these performances on You Tube, and go in person if and when you can!
A simply amazing and wonderful display of love! Rufus did an amazing job putting this show together!
This was a transcending event Emmy, the McGarrigles et al have carried me through the last 40 years I love them all dearly and i have thrived on their music and how it weaves throught their lives (or vice versa) Learning of the connection with David Ondaatje was amazing. I own all Mcgarrigle recordings in various media, including a 33 1/3 single of LOVE OVER AND OVER. I have most of everything Emmy has recorded . The evening was nostalgic, memorable and crammed with high art, emotion and joy. Thank you everyone, especially Rufus, for opening the door to your lives so wide that we all could peek in
It was a wonderful coming together and expression of love and appreciation for a lovely and talented woman. Very emotional and moving. I was so glad to be able to be a part of it.
If you've ever heard anyone from this musical family you know they are all truly gifted. The greatest gifts come from their musical heritage: Kate & Anna McGarrigle, the sisters who wrote and performed some of the best music of our time in the past 40 years. The human condition has never been more subtly expressed than in Kate McGarrigle's personal journey which this concert brought together with the voices of those she touched: Anna, her sister; Rufus and Martha, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Antony, Jenni Muldaur, Teddy Thompson, Sloan Wainwright, Justin Vivian Bond and the rest of her musical family. The love shared by performers and audience that night is a rare thing I will treasure forever. Bravo!
The concert was elegant and touching, bittersweet and uplifting. Each performer brought such beauty, dignity humor and joy to each performance. Brilliant talents all around. Two standouts for me that brought tears to my eyes: Rufus singing The Walking song, and Emmylou & Teddy singing I Eat Dinner. Heartbreakingly beautiful. Can not wait for the recording of this concert.
