About

Wanda Sykes has been deemed one of the funniest stand up comics by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly's 25 Funniest People in America.

Sykes was seen on several television shows over the past two years.   This year she made a return to HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” starring opposite Larry David.   In 2010 she starred on her own late night talk show on FOX, “The Wanda Sykes Show”.    In October of 2009 her second HBO stand up special “I’ma Be Me” premiered.  It was taped at the Warner theatre in Washington DC where she tackled topics like the first black president, gay cruises, being a new mom and aging.   The special was nominated for two 2010 Primetime Emmy awards: Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special and Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special.

This July she can be heard in the animated feature “Ice Age: Continental Drift” as ‘Granny.’  In 2010 she was heard in the Fox animated feature “Rio” as ‘the Goose.’

Her first HBO comedy special “Wanda Sykes: Sick and Tired” debuted in October 2006 and was nominated for a 2007 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special.  It was taped in Seattle and covered everything from racial profiling to gay marriage.

Sykes was seen in the feature films “Evan Almighty,” the sequel to “Bruce Almighty,” in which she co-starred with Steve Carell, the New Line feature “Monster-In-Law” starring opposite Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, and was heard in the animated feature “Over the Hedge” for Dreamworks as well as “The Barnyard” for Paramount Pictures.   She can also be seen co-starring with Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman in the romantic comedy “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.”  Sykes starred and produced the Comedy Central show "Wanda Does It" where she tried various non-showbiz jobs.  Her first book titled Yeah, I Said It, published by Simon & Schuster, hit bookstores in September 2004.  Yeah, I Said It is a hilarious collection of essays touching on life, family and current events.

In the fall of 2003 she was seen on Fox's "Wanda at Large" which she wrote, produced and starred in. She also has a one hour Comedy Central special called "Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied".  In addition, she can be seen on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" or heard on Comedy Central's "Crank Yankers” as the voice of Gladys Murphy.

Wanda was born in Portsmouth, VA and raised in Maryland.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University. Her stand-up career began at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, DC where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience.

She spent 5 years as part of HBO's critically acclaimed "Chris Rock Show." As a performer and writer on the show, she was nominated for three Primetime Emmys and in 1999 won the Emmy for "Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special."  In 2001, she won the American Comedy Award for "Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic".  She won three more Emmys, in 2002, 2004 and 2005 , for her work on “Inside the NFL” for Outstanding Studio Show - Weekly- Inside The NFL.

In 2010 she won a GLAAD award for promoting equal rights for gays and lesbians in the media.

She also appeared in the feature films: "Pootie Tang", "Nutty Professor 2; The Klumps", and "Down to Earth".

    Total chaos

by ctmock on 5/21/24The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

People kept coming in and out throughout the whole performance. They were loud and it was hard to hear Wanda because of the noise. As much as they took our phones away - which is fine by me - they should do better to stop interruptions to the show.

    Wanda was great!

by Jen on 5/21/24The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

I expected nothing less. Wanda never disappoints. Having Keith Robinson as her opening act is wonderful. Loyalty on display - but - he's also still Keith and as funny as ever, so, having him open is a no-brainer...Strokes or not! It was good to see him. Lot of security on display and made me worried - not for us - for Wanda.

    Hysterical as always!

by Cathy on 5/21/24The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

Love her! Wanda never disappoints, this is the 2nd time I saw her at the Chicago theater. She is so funny I really enjoy her show she keeps you laughing the entire time! I did not like the phone lock up rule, I left my phone in the car so I couldn't take a picture of the marquee or pictures of the inside of the beautiful theater before the show started. I'm a responsible adult and I know I have to keep my phone off during the show.

    Great Show, great venue

by KJJG on 5/20/24The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

The Filmore was a perfect venue for the Wanda Sykes concert. We were in the Mezzanine where the seats were comfortable and small tables were between every other seat. The only issue was the sandal-footed woman behind us, wanted to put her feet on the table between us - yuck! Wanda was great, it was a solid 90 minutes of entertainment.

    Wanda Sikes

by Gina on 5/20/24The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

The show was fabulous but getting into the venue was a nightmare! There has to be a more efficient way to move the crowd though

    Hilarious as ever

by Chris S on 5/20/24The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

The show by Wanda Sykes was absolutely hysterical. Laughed every moment. It was exciting to see her in concert again last time I saw her was early 2000s back in San Diego. If she was going to be in the area again, I will go pay for another ticket to go see her again. She was worth every moment.

    Good time overall

by DW on 5/20/24The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

Wanda Sykes was funny & entertaining. She got a bit too political for my taste (and we're on the same side), but overall she was very funny. What I didn't like was at the Fillmore, it took 40 minutes to get us through security & to lock up our phones. We got to the venue early & still missed most of the opening act. It was very annoying to pay all this money, wait in line for 40 minutes, & then miss part of what we paid for. I'm not sure if it's always like that at the Fillmore, if it was just because of this show & the hassle of locking up the phones (& fit bits, apple watches, etc).

    Wanfa was so funny.

by Jamilmd on 5/20/24The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

Wanda was funny it seemed longer than an hour 15 min. She is witty, sharp and I would see her again. She was so funny I did not mind the hassel of the phone pouches. Her opening at was meh but it's nice she is employing a brother with a disability

Wanda Sykes is great. Filmore too

by Magnifico on 5/20/24The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

We loved the show, love the Filmore. The one thing wasn't fantastic? The ushers, while very friendly, were not that helpful getting people to their seats. One gal in particular, basically told people"your seats are up there and in the middle". The rows aren't clearly labeled (that I could see) and I'm glad we were led to our seats

BAD entry and BAD exit: Clowes Hall nightmare

by Pginsber on 5/20/24Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Getting in and getting out was a fiasco a Clowes Hall. They don’t tell you this in advance but you have to lock up your phones before entering. Since your phone is your ticket-they’ve got 4 people standing around the entry doors looking at your tickets and writing your seat number on a sticky note. This was pure confusion-no well-marked lines just a mob funneling through 4 people with their pad of post-it notes. After you’ve made it through THAT mob, then you join the throng waiting in the vestibule to go through the doors. No security inspections just blobs of people waiting randomly. Turns out they want you to turn off your phone and smart watches and put them in a secure pouch. WOULD IT KILL THEM TO HAVE SOME SIGNAGE ? We’ve already stood for 25 mins in a line to get a sticky note, NOW they’re putting our phones in a magnetically-sealed pouch -a BIG dirty looking pouch-that you have to carry around-and WAIT-where’s that damn stick note I’m supposed to have? I’ve been in line over 45 minutes and I’m barely through the door. Waited 15 mins in line for the ladies restroom, then 25 mins in line at the bar. I get to my seat after the concert started. Concert was good-warm up act was lame and spent most the time saying f-bombs. Wanda was good. She started in on a line from a previous show so I started to be disappointed but then she stopped and took it someplace new. Concert’s over-first thing in mind is how do I get this damn thing off my phone. There’s no markings or signs, so you have to look for the crowd and hope at the end there a guy with a thingy that can free your phone. It’s dark outside and you’ve just got 4 random people out front WITH NO SIGNS with an overflowing box of these empty dirty phone prisons. FINALLY got my phone, now we race to the parking garage. Jump in the car, hurry up 4 flights of stairs, get in the exit line on the 4th floor and WAIT. WAITED FOR 50 minutes-without exaggeration. There’s nobody helping traffic exit the theater. Cars just dribbling through a single exit lane, then stopping at a stop sign. WHAT A HUGE NIGHTMARE. Wanda was funny, but next time, I’ll save my $300 bucks and 2 hours of my life waiting in lines, and just watch it on streaming.
