About

Wanda Sykes has been deemed one of the funniest stand up comics by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly's 25 Funniest People in America.

Sykes was seen on several television shows over the past two years.   This year she made a return to HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” starring opposite Larry David.   In 2010 she starred on her own late night talk show on FOX, “The Wanda Sykes Show”.    In October of 2009 her second HBO stand up special “I’ma Be Me” premiered.  It was taped at the Warner theatre in Washington DC where she tackled topics like the first black president, gay cruises, being a new mom and aging.   The special was nominated for two 2010 Primetime Emmy awards: Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special and Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special.

This July she can be heard in the animated feature “Ice Age: Continental Drift” as ‘Granny.’  In 2010 she was heard in the Fox animated feature “Rio” as ‘the Goose.’

Her first HBO comedy special “Wanda Sykes: Sick and Tired” debuted in October 2006 and was nominated for a 2007 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special.  It was taped in Seattle and covered everything from racial profiling to gay marriage.

Sykes was seen in the feature films “Evan Almighty,” the sequel to “Bruce Almighty,” in which she co-starred with Steve Carell, the New Line feature “Monster-In-Law” starring opposite Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, and was heard in the animated feature “Over the Hedge” for Dreamworks as well as “The Barnyard” for Paramount Pictures.   She can also be seen co-starring with Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman in the romantic comedy “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.”  Sykes starred and produced the Comedy Central show "Wanda Does It" where she tried various non-showbiz jobs.  Her first book titled Yeah, I Said It, published by Simon & Schuster, hit bookstores in September 2004.  Yeah, I Said It is a hilarious collection of essays touching on life, family and current events.

In the fall of 2003 she was seen on Fox's "Wanda at Large" which she wrote, produced and starred in. She also has a one hour Comedy Central special called "Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied".  In addition, she can be seen on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" or heard on Comedy Central's "Crank Yankers” as the voice of Gladys Murphy.

Wanda was born in Portsmouth, VA and raised in Maryland.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University. Her stand-up career began at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, DC where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience.

She spent 5 years as part of HBO's critically acclaimed "Chris Rock Show." As a performer and writer on the show, she was nominated for three Primetime Emmys and in 1999 won the Emmy for "Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special."  In 2001, she won the American Comedy Award for "Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic".  She won three more Emmys, in 2002, 2004 and 2005 , for her work on “Inside the NFL” for Outstanding Studio Show - Weekly- Inside The NFL.

In 2010 she won a GLAAD award for promoting equal rights for gays and lesbians in the media.

She also appeared in the feature films: "Pootie Tang", "Nutty Professor 2; The Klumps", and "Down to Earth".

    One hour show?

by VW on 5/7/24Emerald Queen Casino - Tacoma

I love Wanda Sykes and was so excited to see her. Her show was supposed to start at 8pm with another comedienne as a warm up, however, the first act did not begin until 8:45pm so Wanda did not come on until 9pm and was done at 10. One hour? I live 95 miles away from the hotel. If I'd know it was a one hour show, I might have re-thought it. I have to admit, I kind of felt cheated. As for the venue, nice hotel, but food options were really limited with the two nearby restaurants having a 1 and 2 hour wait. Service at the bakery was super slow. Seats in the auditorium were not comfortable. Also, not sure about how I feel about having to have my phone in a locked pouch. I totally understand why, however, what if I had a babysitter and there was an emergency?? If the pouch was clear, I would at least be able to see who was calling. Food for thought...

Late start, Wanda was great and so was her opener. No real complaints besides late start. Thanks Wanda ❤️

    Venue Hot - Show Mediocre

by Matt on 5/6/24Silver Legacy Casino Reno - Reno

The venue, at the request of the performer, locked up our phones and watches. I understand the phone lock up, but not my watch. The venue was uncomfortably hot. I found the set to be kind of mediocre. There were funny parts but I’m in no rush to see her live again anytime soon.

    Funny as hell!

by DJM on 5/6/24Silver Legacy Casino Reno - Reno

Wanda Sykes brought her usual ‘A’ game tonight. She always tells it like it is. Unashamedly funny and insightful in her beliefs, she once again delivers with a punch!

    Super Relatable and Super Funny!!

by Michelle on 5/6/24Silver Legacy Casino Reno - Reno

We had the best time! Wanda is relatable and so funny! I would see her again for sure. Wasn’t to thrilled about the Silver Legacy Staff’s ability to get everyone in the theater. I understand the locking of the phones but it took too long. The show started late because of it.

Wanda was terrific. Love her. She had me doubled over in laughter, the first five minutes. Love her in all she does.

    Wanda in Reno

by Ace on 5/6/24Silver Legacy Casino Reno - Reno

Wanda was great. I enjoyed her show. Would have preferred the show to have started on time. The venue entry and exit was horrible. We were funneled through an exit like sheep onto escalators that apparently could not handle being full so only allowed on in groups of 10! The whole no telephone seating was a fiasco. People near us were given the wrong seat number on their stupid post it note and then made to go open phone "locker"to find the correct seating which was one row back- NOT VERY ORGANIZED OR PROFESSIONAL

    Wanda's best performance

by Cynthia GF on 5/6/24Silver Legacy Casino Reno - Reno

I have seen Wanda's stand-up shows over the years, but this show in Reno 2024 was by far her best performance here ever. I also was pleased to see her opening act, Keith Robinson, returning to the stage after suffering his strokes. When I saw him opening up for Wanda maybe 10 years ago or so, he was hilarious then, and though he since suffered what appears to be quite serious strokes, he has quite keenly incorporated these health challenges into his comedy act. Both Keith and Wanda had my husband and I in tears from laughing so much. Great show!

I loved it/ She was delightful and so was her opening at. It was just as I expected. I don't understand why it started so late, however.

    Yondr pouches

by smreed on 5/6/24Silver Legacy Casino Reno - Reno

Wanda was fabulous as usual! The event uses Yondr pouches which is a huge inconvenience. I believe it is required at her comedy shows. I would never attend another one if this is the case. Adults can silence their phones. You literally have to wait in a line to lock your phone or smartwatch in a case to get into the venue. If you have someone at home you might need to check on you have to go to the lobby to get your phone unlocked. When the show is over you get to wait in another line to get your phone case unlocked. Huge inconvenience.

    Great Experience

by PigtailsandSunshine on 5/6/24Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Aside from the obvious that Wanda Sykes was hysterical, the venue was run smoothly. Getting everyone seated, with their phones put away, and unlocking their phones at the end of the show. A plus was the Dolby Venue. Go early and grab great sushi from the nearby sushi bar just upstairs in the center.

    She used to be funny

by Larisa on 5/6/24Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

I discovered Wanda on Ellen and she always used to talk about her family and herself. Now the first big part of the show was about her age and “being old”, the middle was about her family and herself (this part was actually funny and relevant) and the last part was about politics. I know that all the comedians like to include politics in their acts but this was a lot, and with details about a trial that I didn’t know. It was boring. She is not what she used to be.
