Todd Rundgren on Tour

Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.

No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.

Todd Rundgren in Concert

Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

    Transcendent

by Katy on 4/30/24Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

If there’s any question in your mind about whether you should see Todd Rundgren in concert, DO IT. He’s one of the greatest, trailblazing, most prolific musicians of our time. The show far exceeded all of my wildest wishes and expectations. He took us to church. As far as the venue — Penn’s Peak, Jim Thorpe, PA — goes, I will say at one point the crowd gathered at the back bar was very disruptive to an a cappella song (Honest Work). A sound barrier of some kind would have been nice. It was so disrespectful. If you don’t care about the music, why even be there? That’s a venue issue and nothing to do with Todd, who’s a Wizard, a True Star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mind blown. Transcendent.

    Deep Tracks OK, but.....

by Prog-Ed on 4/30/24Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

I certainly respect that Mr. Rundgren has earned the right to play whatever songs he wants at this stage in his exceptional career. That said, when I first booked the tickets in January for my wife, daughter and soon-to-be son in law, I had them listen to mostly the well known hits from the 70's. NONE of which were played during the 90+ minute concert until the encore which included a shortened 3 minute combination of "I saw the light", "Hello it's me"and "Can we still be friends". followed by a short 3 minute version of "A dream goes on forever". My hat remains off to Todd for his great music, but I think if I had his ear, I'd ask him to include just a few of his 70's hit in the main body of the concert.

    At Least One Hit Please

by Mike R. on 4/30/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

I've been a fan of Todd Rundgren for years. I own almost his entire catalogue and have a fair amount of familiarity with even his deepest tracks. His show in Indy was good. The sound and lighting were excellent. The musicianship was excellent. I know there are many musicians from his era that rely on their hits from back in the day. Todd is not one of them. He plays whatever the hell he wants, which is cool, but I honestly didn't recognize any of the songs he played that night. Sure, there was a medley of a few hits during the encore but that was it. For me, it would have been nice to have the show evenly split between what Todd wants to play and what the audience came to hear. It was after all, the people in the audience that bought his music and made him the legend he is today. To not play the stuff the audience came to hear is a slap in the face. Because if that, this is my third and final Todd Rundgren concert.

Who does he think he is?

by Angry on 4/30/24Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Todd Rundgren is not relevant, although he must think he is. There weren't 10 people under 65 at the show to hear the 5 songs they remember from when they listened to popular music. We wanted to hear those songs we really liked. His performance was 2 hours (commendable) and sounded good to my ear (although the man next to me said he couldn't sing anymore). Couldn't he have found the space to sprinkle in the hits? NO. His encore was a 3 minute medley of those songs followed by 2 more songs we didn't know (we left during song 2). I don't think he played Bang the drum (unless it was after I left) but I'm not a big fan of it. Were all the other songs new material he was promoting or song from 30, 40 or 50 years ago? I don't know and it doesn't matter. His audience doesn't care. We don't buy new music. We want to check off an item on our bucket list. Todd is off my buckist.

    Excellent venue, excellent concert

by Jayne on 4/30/24Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

What an excellent concert and venue. This is my favourite band of all time. I wish they would come back more often. I do wish they would take reservations at Roadies. I would like to eat there before the concert, but living in Scranton, it's too far to come and not get served. The best part was seeing Kasim again, wish I could have gotten a chance to talk to him.

    I new better

by Slashbait on 4/29/24Goodyear Theater - Akron

Okay, right off the bat I new Tod hates to play his old good songs and expected a medley at end. I go to his concerts because my wife’s a fan. What ever songs were played in first hour you couldn’t tell what he was saying because it was way loud and distorted. Second hour h Got better. Not to impressed with song go down with the boat? Anyway I have now seen him 4 times. Once free at Cleveland rib burn off and this concert at 200 bucks, Ouch! Granted a lot of people were in 60s at this concert , but was funny to see 3 people. By me in first half sleeping🍄 Funny every time I leave one of his concerts , I feel I can do anything I want like he does at his concerts.

    Unparalleled musicianship excellence.

    by vj4utopia on 4/29/24Goodyear Theater - Akron

There are not enough characters to express my joy of this TR show. Surely not a show for Todd Rundgren fans expecting the "usual"hits, it is wonderful show for a first time Todd show attendee and an ultra special TReat to the seasoned long time followers. Todd's voice was in full form and the band was spot on as usual. These are a group of famous musicians in their own rite and have played together for many, many years. They are indeed family to us and each other for sure. I could go on but I think this basically says it all. To be in the company of the True Wizard a TRue star is always a privilege and a happy zone.

    Boring

by Mike on 4/29/24Goodyear Theater - Akron

I’m not a big fan of his deep tracks, and that’s pretty much all he played. Also a lot of solos featuring Todd’s singing. He’s a great songwriter and guitarist, but not a great singer.

    Todd Rundgren Akron

by KimH on 4/29/24Goodyear Theater - Akron

It was amazing to hear the "deep cuts"I personally didn't need to hear the songs that some plp wanted to hear. Todd's voice was top notch, and of course his movements. The band was in fine tune even without our Jesse (rip) Todd does not need to prove his self to anyone, he is a "True Wizard"

    Sprinkle in a few favs

by Rhonda on 4/29/24Goodyear Theater - Akron

I can't even tell you how many times I've seen Todd... NY, CA, NJ, OH,, and have loved him at every show. This last show was a ton of his new tunes, which were great, just wished a few favorites would have been sprinkled in between them to get the crowd going. I invited my cousin, who was not too familiar with his songs, so had to sing them to her so she would recall them and he didn't sing half of them, but she said she still had fun. Would definitely go to see his next show, as I truly love to watch him perform.
