San Antonio Spurs History

The story of the San Antonio Spurs began in the summer of 1973, when a group of local investors leased the Dallas Chaparrals and brought professional basketball to San Antonio. Midway through that first season, the group purchased the team outright, planting the roots of what would become one of the NBA’s most respected franchises.

The Spurs spent their first three seasons in the ABA before joining the NBA in 1976, alongside the Nets, Nuggets, and Pacers. Since entering the league, San Antonio has become a model of sustained success, boasting the second-highest winning percentage (.595) among all NBA teams. Over the decades, the Spurs have captured five NBA championships and 22 division titles.

The team has honored its legends by retiring 10 jersey numbers, including Hall of Famers George "Iceman" Gervin, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker—all of whom helped define generations of Spurs basketball.

The 2025–26 season marks a significant moment in Spurs history. After 29 seasons as head coach, Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has transitioned into the role of President of Basketball Operations. Stepping into the head coaching role is Mitch Johnson, officially named the 19th head coach in franchise history after serving as acting head coach for the majority of last season.

On the court the Silver and Black are led by NBA All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. They are joined by Spurs veterans Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan while Stephon Castle, the NBA’s 2025 Rookie of the Year, returns for his second season. This summer the Spurs added veteran leadership with the additions of Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. The 2025 NBA Draft brought more young talent to San Antonio, including No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper and No. 14 pick Carter Bryant.

  • Let's Get this Season Started!

by Irene on 10/7/25Frost Bank Center - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

it is always fun to reconnect with Spurs Family and Friends! Also, great to visit with new faces sitting next to you and asking them about their seats, their favorite players, both on Spurs and other teams. The drinks were affordably priced (I don't drink beer) and we had an opportunity to see the new faces on the team, but, no names on jerseys made it hard to know the new faces. The "garage sale"was great; lines were long before scrimmage but closing had some great pricing on limited selection. Sadly, we did not make it to fan shop. We're ready for our first game!

  • A True Fan Experience

by Bri V. on 10/7/25Frost Bank Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

This scrimmage was really put on for the fans! So grateful we got to go! We love this event every year. It really gives families a chance to take their families to a game they might not financially be able to experience during the season. There is so much fan interaction and love shown to fans. The Spurs organization really are the heart of San Antonio! Thank you for all you do!

  • Don't sit healthy players

by Ismael on 10/7/25Frost Bank Center - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

Great experience overall but did not understand why Sochan, Vassell, and McLaughlin didn't play. Takes away from fan experience when healthy players don't play.

  • Incredibly fun! BUT…..

by Flower on 10/7/25Frost Bank Center - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

While the scrimmage was soooo much fun, the lines to get weren’t terrible and we got great seats, by the time we were able to get to the concessions all the drinks and food they were advertised as inexpensive were all gone. We ended up paying full price. The first quarter wasn’t even over. It was only 8 minutes long. Not sure how it all could sell out that quickly

  • Great experience!!

by Benito on 10/7/25Frost Bank Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The Spurs Silver/Black scrimmage was a total blast. From the beginning to the end, the energy in the stadium was amazing and the teams played great!! The entertainment was also amazing, from the Hype Squad to the t-shirt give aways (some with autograph basketball inside) and especially the karaoke to end the entertainment by the Spurs players. I am looking forward to using our season tickets this season. I'm expecting the Spurs to be a much better team this season that last season.

  • Excellent event

by Jesse on 4/28/25Rating: 5 out of 5

I've been meaning to write a review and now I'm finally doing it. I took my boy to his first NBA game last month to see the Knicks and Spurs. He had so much fun that he hasn't stopped talking about it since! Basketball is now his new favorite sport.

  • Great time

by SPURS89 on 4/4/25Frost Bank Center - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

The entry into the game needs work..getting there early to The Frost Bank Center isn't worth it if you have to stand outside to the metal detector and then wait another 15 minutes outside before the doors open up ...they need to catch up with the rest of the league..I'm from the DFW area and they don't do this in Dallas,Houston,or OKC...i love my Spurs but doors need to open 90 minutes instead of 60 minutes before the game🖤🩶
