About

Rodrigo y Gabriela on Tour

Do you want flamenco with your heavy metal? Acid rock with your classical guitars? If so, Rodrigo y Gabriela are at your service. Known for a double-guitar attack that translates heavy-metal power to nylon-stringed classical guitars played with flamenco fury, Rodrigo y Gabriela are openhearted entertainers whose musical passion bridges classical and contemporary styles to create a world of its own. Alone on stage, they evoke the passion and precision of heavy metal — such as Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica — and, more recently, the expansive meditations of vintage Pink Floyd. The Mexico City–based guitar duo toured the United States and Europe in 2019 to support their eighth album, Mettavolution.

Rodrigo y Gabriela in Concert

Mexico City natives Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero have been perfecting their rapid-fire fusion of Latin harmonies and rhythms with rock structure since the 2006 release of Rodrigo y Gabriela, which included acoustic cover versions of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and Metallica's "Orion." After meeting in art school as metal-loving teenagers, the couple forged their musical and emotional alliance while busking through Europe. During an eight-year residence in Galway, Gabriela learned how to transfer the driving bodhran-drum rhythms of Irish folk music to her classical guitar.

The instrumentalists continued to play cover songs and salute their influences on concept albums like 11:11 and 9 Dead Alive. Rodrigo y Gabriela's 2019 release, Mettavolution, was their first in five years. It consists of a handful of original tracks topped off by a 19-minute cover version of "Echoes," the sprawling, subtle and mysterious Pink Floyd epic that took up the entire second side of that band's 1971 album Meddle. The title track of Mettavolution, on the other hand, is a typically dynamic Rodrigo y Gabriela explosion of slaps, strums and rapid-fire runs. The title reflects the duo's belief in evolution through compassion, which here translates into nothing less than sheer rock nirvana.

    TOO DARK

by Cleveland on 5/17/24TempleLive Cleveland Masonic - Cleveland

There was no light except during their 2 old songs. I couldn’t see them play. It was like listening to them at home or in the car. I waited to see them for many years. I wanted my money back.

    Group great; venue: Be prepared

by Lungdoc on 5/15/24XL Live - Harrisburg

Love the group, have tracked them for years. Gabriella has to be the hardest working woman in the business. Venue; Doors open at 7 so you can go in and: Stand. Only seating is VIP upstairs or a few reserved tables downstairs. All fine if the website somehow clarified that. But not seen. Option 3 if you are not VIP: Bar seating off to the side, but with the standing crowd you can’t see the stage. Rodrigo and Gabriella: Si si si. XL Live: Ummmmmm

LOVED the artists performances and the music

by Lucie on 5/9/24State Theatre - Portland

The energy of the show was incredible. Full house and rapt audience. Loved loved when they played the music that gave them their break. The only critique of the new music portion is the intense flashing lights. Had to keep my eyes closed during that part of the show, and even when I tried to watch the performance there was no spot light on the performers. If not for that, would have given 5 star review.

    Please play more classics

by Occasional on 5/9/24State Theatre - Portland

One of the challenges of artists is to play the music that made them popular or continue their exploration of their own interests. We wished they had not spent so much of the evening sharing their new work rather than playing their older music.

    Amazing show!

by Kiki on 5/8/24State Theatre - Portland

Love the venue, as usual! But the show that Rodrigo y Gabriela put on was fire! So much sound, music, guitar, percussion and rhythm form two people on stage is amazing. They brought the crowd to life and kept giving us more and more. Love their new stuff, and also still a sucker for their original sounds! Gracias!!

    They Just Kept Rocking

by Cal on 5/8/24State Theatre - Portland

Starting with strong rock and working up their classics, Rodrigo y Gabriela were fantastic. They kept the music coming for well over an hour and a half- they kept switching their guitars, and each time my and I were sure they were going to be done for the night. I really appreciated when Gabriela played on her own; she’s got such a unique style!

    Awful!

by Luisa on 5/7/24State Theatre - Portland

The bass line was so loud that it over-powered the rest of the music. It was uncomfortably loud. I walked out in the middle of the event, enormously disappointed.
