The Robert Cray Band in Concert
When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.
Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.
The Robert Cray Band Background
Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.
Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.
The show was great. Better than I anticipated. It was the first time seeing Robert Cray Band and I look forward to seeing them again!
This is my first time seeing Robert Cray after listening to his music for over 30 years. This was the first time that I attended a concert and the artist sounded better than the studio version. Mr Cray is a true Blues Legend. Clearly the most underrated Artist of our time.
Robert Cray still commands a tremendous presence on stage. Great guitar and vocals .. just like 30 years ago! The Charleston Music Hall is a great place to hear his music .. not a bad seat in the house. Look forward to catching Robert Cray again in the coming months somewhere in the southeast.
Best show I have seen in quite a while. Band is TIGHT and his guitar play still rocks. Very lucky for us to have this venue in Charleston for live music. More live blues in Charleston!!
The Robert Cray Band was part Eric Clapton, Lou Rawls, Booker T and everyone interesting! They are the best of blues and played great songs for 90 minutes.
Great concert, better than expected. The man can still sing and play and the band was awesome as well. Very nice venue, Charleston Music Hall.
Young Bob continues to impress as the years roll on. The sound was clean, the audience interaction just enough, and the overall musicianship of these four together is unparalleled in their genre. Set your mind on groove and follow along with the flow of the music, for it has many a message for you to see, hear, and feel. I am coming up on almost 40 years of seeing this band and I have never had a disappointing set. What other facet of life brings this much joy and consistency?
The Uptown Theater in Napa is an awesome venue for The Robert Cray Band. My daughter and I really enjoyed ourselves. We had a great seat on the 2nd row, but all seats are great at this theater! Robert, Richard, Dover and Les are so much fun to see, and we get tickets EVERY time they are in the Bay Area!
Great show. Robert Cray gets better and better every time I see him
Fabulous show! He did a bunch of off script jamming and his skills just keep getting better and better. Ethereal riffs. Most wonderful experience!
I forget what an experience it is to see a show at the Pantages. Top notch the whole night. Form the moment you walk into the theater, the show and afterwards. The whole night was wonderful. Thanks everyone!!!!!!
The show was fantastic. The theater is wonderful. The staff are very kind. Parking is close and relatively cheap. The staff (kindly) ask people to not take pictures or video during the performance. I love not having the distraction of dozens of phones taking pictures in front of me. Overall it was a great experience. Thanks KST
I’ve seen Robert Cray multiple times over the last 30 years. Robert Cray never disappoints and always puts on a great show. Will continue to see him at every opportunity that comes up!
Robert Cray put on an exceptional performance showcasing his unique vocal style for the blues. He was friendly with the crowd and played hard. The State Theatre in Kalamazoo is simply a beautiful space. The event staff was friendly and knowledgeable.
Just what I love. Small venue, not a lot of glitz and glamour. Just great musicianship.
RCB was unbelievably good and RC himself a wonderful performer, guitarist and world class vocalist. No better venue than The State Theatre (Kalamazoo) as the acoustics are second to none. Still On Top of The World over RCs performance.
Best show of the year, only way to describe was to admit I was lost in the emotion of the music!!
Robert Cray was his fine self once again with a great band to make the music soar!
Robert Cray Band was great (as always)! This is the third time I’ve seen them.
One of the best shows i have ever seen! Robert and the band are all so good!
