About

MIMICKING BIRDS IN CONCERT:

Mimicking Birds combine acoustic folk with spacey atmospherics to create meditative, bittersweet epics. Frontman Nate Lacy's earthy acoustic guitar keeps the group's sound firmly rooted while his keening tenor positively soars, creating a mesmerizing duality for spellbound ticket buyers. Meanwhile his supporting band supplies the fluttering synthesizer atmospherics, shimmering guitar licks, and steady drum shuffles that give these brooding gems a hummingbird heartbeat. With subdued folk ballads like “The Loop” contrasting with ecstatic ditties like “Night Life”, Mimicking Birds bring an eclectic and cerebral sound to every stop on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Portland, OR native Nate Lacy (vocals/ acoustic guitar) began using the Mimicking Birds moniker to record his home demos as early as 2004. As luck would have it, a friend sent some of these early works to Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse, Ugly Casanova) who was looking for artists to add to his newly formed label Glacial Pace. After securing a deal with the label, Lacy tapped Aaron Hanson (drums) and Adam Trachsel (bass) to form a nascent live incarnation of Mimicking Birds for a 2009 North American tour with Modest Mouse. The following year the group released their self-titled debut to much fanfare, earning opening slots for bands like Deertick, Jakob Dylan, and Jenny Lewis. In the meantime the band enlisted Ian Luxton (guitar) and Matthan Minster (guitar/ synths), giving them even more flexibility in concert. Following the 2014 release of their sophomore album Eons, the group has continued to win over fans across the country and abroad with their mesmerizing arrangements.

    Mimicking Birds are great

by noblerinthemind on 4/30/14Rough Trade NYC - Brooklyn

I wish more people knew about them, but the concert was solid and intimate in this space. Not a lot of people. The space itself is great and I will definitely go there again. The music - Mimicking Birds is one of my favorite indie bands. I would say they're a cross between Iron and Wine, Grizzly Bear and Band of Horses, if that makes sense. Paired down, mellow, and beautiful songwriting.
