About

Hey Big Spender!

Spend a little time with SWEET CHARITY. The dance-filled, groovy musical comedy inspired by Federico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria, SWEET CHARITY explores the turbulent love life of Charity Hope Valentine, a hopelessly romantic but comically unfortunate dance hall hostess in New York City. With a tuneful, cool, mid-1960s score by Cy Coleman, sparkling lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and a hilarious book by Neil Simon, SWEET CHARITY captures all the energy, humor, and heartbreak of Life in the Big City for an unfortunate but irrepressible optimist. Features the songs "Big Spender," "If My Friends Could See Me Now," "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This," and "I'm a Brass Band."

    Fun Show

by Nolaughterhere on 9/19/18Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire - Lincolnshire

Although Charity carries the majority of the show, it is the other characters that stand out. Dani Spieler as Nickie was outstanding (voice, acting) as was Alex Goodrich as Oscar (hysterical), and Adam Jacobs as Vittorio (what a voice!). Expected more out of NaTonia Monet as Helene but her voice cracked and she missed a lot of notes during key numbers like Baby Dream Your Dreams and There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This. Hoping to chalk it up to just a bad night. Kenny Ingram (Daddy) and Terry Hamilton (Herman) were great but they really have minor roles with their time onstage. When it comes to Charity (Anne Horak) she acted the part but let too many funny lines go flat. Her voice was fine but not the power that we expect from Charity. She was too cute and not enough spunk. Her best scene was in Vittorio's closet. The production was great and it is really hard to do this play in the round rather than on a massive stage but they pulled it off. The big numbers (Big Spender, Rich Man's Frug, Rhythm of Life and Weddings) were well choreographed and performed. You can't go wrong with a Neil Simon musical staged by Bob Fosse.
