I am a very devoted college hockey fan, therefore my expectations for the event were high. The Friday night start time at 4;30pm had competition with people still getting out of work and Friday night high school football which partially explained low fan turnout in the tourney's early going. By 8pm, the crowd was at 5000 for the main event. Saturday the crowd pattern was the same but I can only guess why again the low first game turnout. The arena staff was amazing friendly and helpful...proven by them finding and saving my lost jacket from Friday night to be hand delivered to me Saturday night. Maine"s Coach Red Gendron, the primary mover and shaker for the Ice Breaker to happen in Portland, mingled freely with the crowd on both nights prior to his own contest...he loved the little kids. these college hockey players more than did their part to present quality hockey at such an early time in the season. I was surprised at the good number of fans who made the travel to follow the three invited visitors. My only drawback, so small though, was the lack of quality programs with team info stats. Biggest surprise of the event was the University Maine team itself...they played both games at 110% and showcased the possibility of two high quality goalies. The transformation of way too many penalities on Friday night to only three on Saturday was a show of great discipline. My thanks to all for a great two nights of enjoyment.
