Gladys Knight On Tour

The "Empress of Soul" is back. One of Motown's most iconic acts, Gladys Knight, returns to the big stage in 25 cities across North America for her 2022 tour. Although she's perhaps best known for her original rendition of the R&B classic "I Heard it Through the Grapevine (1967)," Knight has remained in the limelight as one of the all-time greats for the last 60 years. The seven-time Grammy award winner has won across three categories including Pop, R&B and Gospel, and has another 22 nominations spanning across five decades. Over her illustrious career, she has released 10 studio albums, with her debut album Miss Gladys Knight releasing in 1978, and her most recent work Where My Heart Belongs coming out in 2014. In 1996, her band Gladys Knight & the Pips was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Knight was also included on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers of All Time list. Off the stage, Knight has authored two books, including a biography titled Each Line of Pain and Glory: My Life Story, and made various appearances on television and the big screen. Her most recent appearances came when she played herself in Coming 2 America in 2021 and when she wore the bee costume on "The Masked Singer" in 2019.

Gladys Knight in Concert

Gladys Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Merald Knight Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth on May 28, 1944. She has a sister (Brenda) and two brothers (Merald "Bubba" Jr. and David). As a child and into her teens, Knight sang in her local church choir where she refined her Motown chops. She had her first breakthrough into the spotlight at the age of 8 when she won Ted Mack's The Original Amateur Hour contest. Over the next few years, Knight and four of her family members (Bubba, Edward Patten, Langston George, and William Guest) formed a performing group to be called Gladys Knight & the Pips. After a successful run in the local Atlanta music scene, the group received a record deal with Brunswick Records in 1957 and began opening for legends in the music scene and influences on their style such as Sam Cooke. The group's first record to chart was in fact a cover of Johnny Otis' "Every Beat of My Heart," which made it into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Knight left the group in 1962 after a string of successful releases such as "Letter Full of Tears" to start a family with her husband Jimmy Newman. However, she returned to the group two years later and went on to critical success over the course of the next five decades.

    Awesome and phenomenal

by Rivia on 3/1/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

Gladys Knight was phenomenal. The lady still has it. Not a crack in her voice nowhere. I totally enjoyed the evening with my Dad who was reluctant to go at first. He had a wonderful time and boosted that it was better than he was expecting. I loved the show and am honored to see the living legend.

    The pipes still work!

by Elvishasleftthebuilding on 3/1/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

Before attending the concert, I read some of her Setlist from last year to see what we might expect. From the number of hits she had to the number of songs she would sing, it was very apparent she wanted to give the audience a great show. She had excellent stage presents once she was led out of the dark into the light of the theater. While there were prompters on the stage for her to gaze at for lyrics, she rarely looked at them and used the length of the stage the entire night. She owned the audience from the minute she walked out of the dark and into the bright lights! She was beloved by her fans, and it energized her throughout the show. So glad to see that, while physically she is diminished in stature, her incredible voice never failed her.

    Gladys Knight

by Maatu on 2/29/24Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium - Spartanburg

I loved everything about this still amazing lady. I was so in awe of her & how youthful she looks. Had to leave early due to other obligations but she is forgiven for starting 30 mins late as when she finally came out she apologized & stated "It took me awhile to put my stockings on . Lol . Never saw her in person before but I knew her music thru my Mother playing her music thru my childhood . I am now 66 years young & my Mom passed in 2014. Thank you Gladys for coming to the Burg .

    Exceptionally Mo Time

by OTCROWAA1 on 2/28/24Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium - Spartanburg

Her performance was Phenomenal, however her stage time was Short for the ticket cost. Understandably so, because we are all getting more seasoned as time goes on. We need mo' time to put on those pantyhose. She looked and sounded FANTASTIC.

    Great sound!

by Don on 2/28/24Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium - Spartanburg

I didn't appreciate waiting 45 minutes for the concert to start. Concert time was supposed to be 7:30. She came on at about 8:15. The sound, her attitude, and her performance was great. I felt that the concert was short only about an hour.

    Friday Night Concert

by Bell on 2/26/24Township Auditorium - Columbia

Gladys Knight still has a beautiful, powerful voice but I was disappointed with the concert. I expected Gladys to talk and interact with the audience and she did not. The show only lasted about an hour 😳 The female back up singers could not compare to the Pips so that was a let down too.

    Underwhelmed

by JCS on 2/26/24Township Auditorium - Columbia

Gladys Knight looked great, her voice sounded very strong, and she still has the sound that identifies her uniqueness. I was very pleased with that. However, I don’t know if it was planned this way, or that she was tired or not feeling well, but the concert lasted only 70 minutes, there was no encore, and she did not perform one of her biggest hits (the James Bond movie theme ‘License To Kill’). She gave no indication that anything was wrong, but i was a bit underwhelmed, not by her performance, but by the concert experience.
