I will keep this review vague to avoid show spoilers. (Game Grumps tends to change up their tour every year anyway, but all the same - spoilers are no fun for anyone!)
The Game Grumps, for those who are not aware, are Youtubers who play various video games while engaging in sometimes-silly, sometimes-engagingly-deep conversations. With millions of fans across the globe, it seems only fair that they decided to do a live tour. But how do you translate a show about watching two guys talk about/around videogames for hours on end into an engaging live event? The potential pitfalls abound, but Arin and Dan (and the crew) have successfully navigated their way into the best live show I've attended in years.
Without giving too much away about the show format, the Game Grumps landed their live show in a happy medium space between scripted and spontaneous. Games and audience participation were integrated into the show perfectly, managing to avoid most of the awkwardness and downtime that can usually come with such additions. While there were plenty of in-jokes and references for long-time fans, the main "meat"of the show was such that anyone (including non-fans) could enjoy themselves without being lost. I was particularly impressed by the big finale of the show, which had the crowd screaming for longer than I thought was physically possible (myself included!)
I would recommend a night with the Grumps to anyone, whether it's a quiet night on Youtube or going to their live show to go nuts for an hour and change. Either way, you're having a good time!
