    What a night!!!

by MsQS on 9/19/10Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Outstanding!!! The versatility of these living legends was demonstrated in this performance. It was most entertaining to see their proficiencies as they exchanged instruments, to entertain the "full house" crowd.

    Freedom Band Fun, But Ho-Hum......

by Damselfish on 9/19/10Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

For the most part, the concert was a walk down memory lane, but not a groundbreaking walk. Yes, it was billed that way, but with such an exciting (and formerly innovative) group of musicians, I had higher hopes. With the exception of Christian McBride, the bassist, everyone else was coasting. Roy Haynes, at 85, still swings, and he is allowed to coast. What was Chick Corea's excuse? Kenny Garrett was less than his usual creative persona, as well. Perhaps they were all tired. I enjoyed the concert for what it was, but I sadly missed what it could have been.

    Smoking rubble

by Drsbar on 9/19/10Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

They tore the house down, absolutely TORE it DOWN. The Portland Schnitzer building is just a pile of smoking rubble now.

    Freedom Band: It was marvelous

by budmail on 9/19/10Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

This event was beyond our wildest expections. The quartet was four deep in the best sounds of jazz, and being there LIVE was the way to hear them play. Roy Haynes, the drummer, and at age 83, well as he has done before, he COMPLETELY blew us away. Such energy and musicality, words just are not enough to describe the feeling. A marvelous night, and once in a life time experience.

    Chick Corea's Freedom Band

by logion on 9/19/10Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

This concert was one of the most amazing that I have seen. The top performances of each of the band were a mini-concert in itself. They integrated well, and combined free form improvisation with some standards such as Thelonious' Dream.
