The Black Jacket Symphony Live in Concert

Founded in 2009 by guitarist J. Willoughby and his partner and technical director Jason Rogoff, the Black Jacket Symphony comprises several groups of musicians dedicated to recreating a specific classic album. Though their live shows are built around performing covers of classic rock albums, in an interview with The Daily Times, Willoughby says that the Black Jacket Symphony is not a tribute band. Willoughby noted that the difference is that the Black Jacket Symphony is all about the music they're playing and not about the musicians themselves. Various Black Jacket Symphony ensembles have recreated an estimated 38 classic albums over the course of their careers.

For shows in 2018, they focused on seven classic recordings in particular -- The Beatles' Abbey Road, Queen's A Night at the Opera, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Journey's Escape, Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, and AC/DC's Back in Black. The Black Jacket Symphony's fanbase has grown over the years well beyond Birmingham. They now have a strong base in both Alabama (Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Chattanooga) and Kentucky (Lexington), while their local fanbase remains strong.

In 2014, to mark Black Jacket Symphony's fifth anniversary, Willoughby and friends presented a trio of concerts at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham, playing music that also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's U.S. debut, focusing on the albums Rubber Soul and Revolver.

In 2014 for an article on Alabama.com, Willoughby was asked about one of his memorable moments with the Black Jacket Symphony. He said, "Being on stage in front of a sold-out crowd at the Alabama Theater, which is a venue I put on a very high pedestal. The encore of the evening was 'Goodnight.' It's a song that I have been singing to my daughter every night before bed, and she was in the crowd of 2,200 people. The moment suddenly hit me, and I quickly had to learn to sing with the biggest lump in my throat that I have ever had."

    Sound quality in theater

by Kstov on 5/17/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - Knoxville

The artists were exceptional. The sound is lacking. We were front row orchestra, but far left corner and everything sounded muffled. If you didn't just know the song lyrics, you'd never understand what anyone was saying/singing. Need more people working, missed 3 songs standing in concession line.

Loved every show we have seen

by Jenny B on 5/15/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - Knoxville

We have seen Black Jacket symphony do multiple different shows now and we have loved every one. That guitarist who does all of the shows is absolutely phenomenal and each singer has really embodied those that they are paying tribute to. You cannot beat the price of these tickets and the shows are excellent!

    Best Yet

by MJ on 5/14/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - Knoxville

Have seen Black Jacket on several occasions. Several in our group, including myself, agree this was the best show so far. Always great but the energy and entertainment, lead singer in particular, was above and beyond.

    Good, not great

by weaverce on 5/14/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - Knoxville

The Black Jacket Symphony's Prince show is the second Black Jacket Symphony I have attended, the first being their Queen show. The Queen show was definitely better. The song selections were great and the vocalists were pretty good, especially the female vocalist for the encore performance of "Nothing Compares 2 U."It was an entertaining concert but not spectacular. One detractor was a lady in front of us who stood up for almost every song, blocking the view of those behind her. Two people in front of me got up and left even before the first set was over, and two others moved higher up in the balcony. The usher was asked to intervene, but she refused. I know this isn't the band's fault, but if they could work out with the ushers next time to make sure all concert goers have a fair chance of getting their money's worth.

    Confused, disappointed

by Music Lover on 5/13/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - Knoxville

See lots of Black Jacket performances and this is the only one I left disappointed in. I had really been looking forward to it and it didn’t live up to the usual quality and authenticity.

    We Went Crazy!

by Nowhere Man 65 on 5/13/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - Knoxville

Once again, Black Jacket Symphony put on a great show doing Prince's Purple Rain. The whole band was awesome, but the lead singer was special. He really put his heart & soul into those songs! Let's Go Crazy started off the show with a bang! Take Me With U is a hidden gem from Prince that flowed smooth as silk. Purple Rain ended the fantastic first set with great vocals and an amazing guitar solo. I Wanna Be Your Lover started off the "greatest hits"part of the show. Again, the singer hit those high notes perfectly. The four song stretch of U Got The Look, Delirious, Raspberry Beret, and Little Red Corvette was my favorite part of a great show. 1999 ended the show in rousing fashion!
