Sandoval is a world-class musician, but the sound guy put down all the effort of the artist.
The performance was a solid two hours without a break. Arturo was so personable and interactive with the audience. The entire band were superstars in their own right. Plus the venue was superb. Not a bad seat in the house.
This show was attractive to all the trumpet players in audience and those who like music without a beginning, middle or end....just sounds on a loop. The screaming mouth sounds without instrument were horrible...as were the jokes. More talking than music and sometimes that was ok....
We went to see Sr. Sandoval because we love Cuban music. While he and his band are excellent musicians, they played only modern jazz, not a single Cuban tune. His banter was often silly and while it entertained some we were not among them.
We flew down from Minnesota just for this concert and we were not disappointed. All the musicians, especially Arturo were a joy to watch and listen to. The variety and sheer joy that each musician displayed was fun to watch and few could resist tapping your foot to the music.
Mr. Sandoval is truly an amazing performer. He is by far the most talented and soulful musician I have ever seen in a live performance. His joy of life and love of his music are profound and he brought me to laughter and tears all evening.. His relationship to his quintet was magic. From Latin to funk to jazz and rock, all flowing through the hour and a half set like liquid gold. Do what you have to do to see this man perform, before he decides to stop touring and sharing his fine music with the world.
Arturo Sandoval put on a great concert at Trinity University, and his group was great. Arturo is a once-in-a-lifetime musician, and he is a great philanthropist, as well. For three days prior to the concert, Arturo put on workshops and masterclasses for high school and middle school music students, and capped it off with a free concert for 2,000 students. What an thoughtful and inspiring gift of his time and talent for the students in the San Antonio area. He is turning seventy soon, so don't miss the opportunity to experience a live concert, while he is still touring. He sounds as great as ever, and his concert is a "bucket list" experience.
Phenomenal show! Comedy, wisdom and amazing music is shared! The Percussionist is a musical genius loved the sound arrangements during his solo. The sax player ... WOW!
