About

Aegis In Concert

The fiery Filipino pop-rock institution Aegis has always been a family affair. Lead singers Juliet, Mercy, and Kris Sunot comprise a powerful sisterhood. The band's sole male member, guitarist and occasional lead singer Rey Abenoja, is the surviving brother of its main songwriter, the late Celso Abenoja. The seven-piece group has performed together since 1995 with the same lineup filled out by Stella Pabico (keyboards), Vilma Goloviogo (drums), and Weng Adriano (bass) (Kris joined the band in 2012).

Aegis cut its teeth playing Japanese clubs and lounges under the name AG's Soundtrippers. They became Aegis in 1998, and the name's connotations of "protection" and "shielding" have only grown more significant over the years. The songs on Aegis' debut album, ‘Halik' (Kiss), were composed entirely by Celso Abenoja, who wrote three kinds of songs, according to his brother: "love songs, angry songs, and super angry songs." The sisters' gritty, stratospheric vocals, augmented by Rey Abenoja's wailing guitar solos, lent emotional intensity to tracks like "Sinta" (Love) and "Luha" (Tears). The album enjoyed quadruple-platinum sales in the Philippines.

Aegis' next album — 1999's ‘Mahal Na Mahal Kita' (I Love You Very Much) — mixed pop and country rock with metallic power balladry. The group expanded its audience with English tracks like "Do You Want Me?," "To Be With You," and the bilingual "Rockin' in the Cities," and the album went double platinum.

‘Awit at Pag-ibig' (Song and Love) — released in 2001 — expanded Aegis' palette with a Christian rock ballad, "Sa'yo Lamang" (Only You) and "Babae Sa Bintana" (Girl in the Window), a bouncy track about a schoolboy crush. On 2003's ‘Ating Sayawin' (Our Saying), the group remixed an album's worth of its hits into ecstatic dance pop and dancehall reggae. ‘Back to Love,' from 2009, marks Aegis' first all-English album, and in 2018 the group released ‘AEGIS 20 & Beyond: Sa Ikalawang Dekada Ng Musika Natin' (In the Second Decade of Our Music).

The beloved Pinoy sensations have also crossed over into other genres. Since 2013, the jukebox musical ‘Rak of Aegis' has enjoyed highly successful runs at the Philippine Educational Theater Association. And in 2017, Aegis joined the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra for ‘Aegis in Symphony,' a symphonic salute to the Philippines' classiest rockers.
