About

Capital One Orange Bowl History

Played annually since the mid-1930s, the Orange Bowl is the second-oldest bowl game in the country behind the Rose Bowl. In fact, it was created as a sort of Florida counterpart to Pasadena's Rose Bowl Game and Rose Parade, a way of drumming up tourist dollars in Miami during the Great Depression. After years in its namesake stadium, in 1996 the Orange Bowl moved just north of the city to Hard Rock Stadium, a 65,000-capacity facility in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Today the Capital One Orange Bowl is included in the New Year's Six, the six bowl games that host the College Football Playoff semifinals on a rotating basis. The Orange Bowl has billed itself "The Home of the ACC Champion" since the 2006 season, and the arrangement with the conference will last at least until 2025. The SEC, Big Ten and Notre Dame are so-called secondary tie-ins.

The game has always been one of the crown jewels of the bowl season. The first bowl game ever televised live in prime time was the 1965 Orange Bowl, in which the Texas Longhorns snuck past the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, 21-17. Other highlights include William "Refrigerator" Perry and his Clemson Tigers teammates stoning the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 1982, 22-15, winning a national championship in the process; the Miami Hurricanes claiming a title of their own in 1984 by the fingertips of Ken Calhoun, who deflected a pass that would've given Nebraska a two-point conversion and a victory; Notre Dame's Raghib "Rocket" Ismail in 1991 returning a punt 92 yards for an apparent winning touchdown over Colorado, only to have the return called back because of a clipping penalty. If history is your thing, the last meeting between coaching legends Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden was at the 2006 Orange Bowl, where Paterno's Penn State team edged Bowden's Florida State squad in three overtimes, 26-23. And if points are your thing, the bowl's 2012 edition saw West Virginia put up 70 of them against Clemson.

  • My last bowl game

by Fifth Orange Bowl on 1/2/23Hard Rock Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

Fan fest was lame . Drunken b list entertainer trying just to provoke teams against each other. Commercials on screen during game . Extremely loud “music “ (noise) during breaks. At least club level was done well.

  • Terrible

Awful experience getting rideshare. No staff knew where to exit the stadium for rideshare (the fourth person actually knew). The golf carts ($15) used to get to the rideshare pick up is one of the worst scams I've ever experienced. The rideshare pick up spot was horrible. This was my 42nd bowl game and I've been to over 65 different stadiums. So this wasn't my first rodeo but it will be my last at this so called venue.

  • Hard Rock Stadium Rocks !

The Orange Bowl was easy from parking to shuttling to leaving.

  • Poor view, nice venue

by Marty on 1/3/22Hard Rock Stadium - MiamiRating: 3 out of 5

Would not recommend the Lifewatr Lounge unless you have assigned seats. No sitting was available, even in the high chairs, thus the view was very obstructed. Great to have included soft drinks and food but bad views of the game. Wasn't worth the high price paid.

  • Go Georgia

by David on 1/3/22Hard Rock Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Great game, enjoyed seeing Georgia win. All of the fans from both UGA and Michigan were very nice, no trash talk! Orange Bowl (Hard Rock Stadium) is a nice venue. Pregame fanfest, very good but not as nice as pregame 2017 Rose Bowl, where there was larger area, more spread out with more food and wine vendors. Inside the PA System was too loud with way too much static and the Halftime Music Show and the entire second half. Overall, still a great game.

  • Wow

by Big Mike on 1/2/20Hard Rock Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Got 2 tickets to The Capital One Orange bowl in the Capitol one lounge at liv and WOW what a great time. All the Capitol one people were awesome. The food was great open bar and seats were awesome as well. Got to meet Dan Marino and Tiki Barber. Got photos and autos from both. We also got to go down to the sideline and hang before the game. Well worth every penny.

  • Wonderful facilities. But can the music.

by College football fan on 1/2/20Hard Rock Stadium - MiamiRating: 3 out of 5

Stadium is terrific. But the ingame experience is marred by the fact that there are so many commercials and the stadium plays music. Why have two outstanding college bands that can never get heard. We don’t need to hear songs when bands are there. Bands are part of the football game and we never get to hear them. Being at the game is like paying a lot of money to listen to commercials Interrupted occasionally by a football game

  • Don't eat the food

by Kat on 1/2/20Hard Rock Stadium - MiamiRating: 3 out of 5

The game was fine, but I had to make myself throw up when I got home because the oil from the fries was all I could taste all night even though I tried to wash it down with drinks and ice cream. I don't think they've cleaned their deep fyers since 1990. Disgusting

My experience at the hard rock Stadium was above and beyond everything I could imagine. It was definitely a worthy experience and everything and everyone made it smooth, no problems or anything. The game was entertaining and I’ll most definitely could see myself going back to this event again in the future

Our Son plays in Miami's band, we went to support him and had a good time. Next time I'll select lower seats.

  • by Anonymous on 1/2/18Hard Rock Stadium - MiamiRating: 2 out of 5

The game itself and stadium was great,,what was below average was the seat...I sat behind the camera man and had to keep standing to see the action...seat should of been designated partially obstructed.. In addition,,the parking pass that I purchased was never mailed on time and I had to stop by the office and pick it up in person..which was closed..lucky someone was leaving and helped me out..otherwise,,I wouldn't of been able to park.

  • Orange Bowl (Wisco vs Miami)

    by JeffW67 on 1/2/18Hard Rock Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

My review is based on an evening game experience om December 31st....temp was about 70F. We sat in Section 249 Seats 17 &18. I loved the stadium first of all. Super venue where you felt totally part of the event. We had a great view of the field too. JumboScreen monitors on all 4 corners is brilliant instead of two on either end zone. Club level amenities & accessibility to stuff seemed easy & simple but we I didn't use it as we were glued to our seats throughout. Would definitely do it again!

  • Hard Rock Stadium's Highs & Lows

by Zakes on 1/5/17Hard Rock Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

The Orange Bowl is an annual event and my 12 year old son and I decided to buy tickets as we are from Michigan and have a place in Pompano Beach. Great experience buying tickets and an orange parking pass for stadium on-line. So, got hassled parking in the orange lot where I pulled in after being directed where to go, asked where the Fanfest with the stage was set up to many different people (especially the useless employees in red security jackets) and nobody could give me an answer. We came in on NW side of stadium so could not visibly see which parking lot it was set up in. So had to go in to stadium and then go to courtesy booth where we finally got answers. Problem was, we were now in stadium and Fanfest was in parking lot. Luckily, two Gentleman (employees of the stadium) named Art and Carlos, helped us out, signed my ticket and allowed us to go back out and get back in. Thanks to their customer service, my son got to see Cole Swindell on the Capital One Stage at Fanfest for a few songs and then get back to see that incredible and emotional game. Overall it was a positive experience. My son also got a lesson in being assertive and pressing to get answers and assistance, especially when you pay today's ticket prices. All good...
