Great community effort in Wizard of Oz

by Indyfriend on 4/9/12Des Moines Civic Center - Des Moines

The Ballet Des Moines' presentation of Wizard of Oz was terrific. With more than 150 kids involved in the production and only a few professionals, the opportunity for chaos and mediocrity was strong. Instead, the company produced a lively and fun production that combined the cuteness of the kids and all the professionalism of the Tin Man. Jacque LeWerne as the wicked witch in the evening performance was a stand out, as were the many kids packed on stage as Dorothy arrived at Oz. Great job!

    Awesome ballet with special effects!

by Tigermamma on 4/9/12Des Moines Civic Center - Des Moines

The Des Moines Ballet put on an excellent rendition of the Wizard of Oz. It had great dancing and very cool special effects including a lot of ariel stunts. I took my 5 year old daughter who is in her 2nd year of dance and she loves the movie Wizard of Oz. She loved this performance. Great show!!

Wizard of Oz was wonderful! Very professional!

by pilatelatte on 4/9/12Des Moines Civic Center - Des Moines

WE throughly enjoyed the performance. We also had tickets to the Dance Series and enjoyed the Wizard of Oz just as much or more! We are ballroom dancers and appreciate all forms of dance and the skill it requires. Thank you to the Civic Center for hosting such a wonderful event!

    Not professional

by DSMDancemom on 4/9/12Des Moines Civic Center - Des Moines

If this were a school performance I would have given it 5 stars, but paying $55+ per ticket and expecting a professional performance made 3 stars generous. The children did not know their parts, Their performance was not clean and professional. While the leading roles were amazing, they did not prepare the many children well to perform. Even the teenagers would make huge mistakes (stage right and left dancing to different timing) The acting was hard to follow, mostly because the music didn't seem to tell the story through music (plus was hard for dancers to stay with). The costumes were amazing, and there were some clever parts throughout. Again, if it was advertised as simply a local show it would have been wonderful, but this was not on par with a professional ballet production.

Well, I was a little bummed, although I can only blame myself for not doing a little more research. I was disappointed there were little kids in it and it wasn't professionals. However, after that is said, I did like it, I wouldn't recommend it to my friends because they wouldn't go see a ballet ever. But the dancers whowere the main stars really did a great job. The music was good. I loved that the dancers could spend minutes on their toes, pointe is such an incredible, graceful thing to watch. Overall, the performance was great, but not a fan of it not being by professionals, which is again, my fault for not checking.

    A surprising wonder

by grammsof16 on 5/23/11Burnsville Performing Arts Center - Burnsville

I was truly amazed at the quality of this show. The music selection was perfect. The choreography was amazing. The dancing was a joy to watch. I bought small and medium sized granchildren, a daughter and myself. The 5 year old called it awesome! We all loved it.
