William Michael Morgan in Concert
Country crooner William Michael Morgan's stage presentation perfectly matches his music, which is to say there's nothing remotely fussy or overblown about it. Like all the classic country singers he admires, Morgan simply gets up there and sings his heart out, sharing his larger-than-life Tennessee twang with no messing around.
When he delivers tunes like his debut hit "I Met a Girl," it's clear that Morgan's approach is very much a part of the here and now, but there's a strong old-school element to his sound. On tunes like "Brokenhearted," he laments the lack of vintage crying-in-your-beer country tunes on today's Nashville scene, and with good reason — Morgan's rich, warm pipes are ideally suited to heart-on-sleeve balladry.
Underlining his old-school inclinations is the fact that Morgan has also been known to give the band a break and stand up there all by himself for a few songs, covering tunes by legends like George Strait, Willie Nelson, and Hank Williams, Jr.
William Michael Morgan Background
Hailing from Vicksburg, Mississippi, William Michael Morgan developed his talents at an early age — he was still in his teens when he signed with Warner Nashville. But from the very beginning of his recording career, he nevertheless sang in a voice loaded with gravitas.
Morgan connected straight out of the gate. He hit the country Top 10 with his 2015 debut single, "I Met a Girl" (one of the writers on the tune is country star Sam Hunt), and he reached No. 5 with his first album, Vinyl, which appeared the following year.
Having arrived in a time when the country charts were festooned with hip-hop beats and in-your-face pop production, Morgan offered a welcome alternative — with his big, deep voice and tried-and-true twangy approach, he came off like a millennial George Strait, something the world was definitely ready for.
