The Flying Dutchman was soooo Wagnarian
Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee
This is one of the few out of many operas I never saw. I am happy that the intermission was after the 1st act. It was long and tedious even though the actor had a great voice, it was rather boring. I suppose there is not much in this opening to be exciting, but surely some movement by the lead singer could have helped. It picked up in the next two acts.

Music, cast and singing were fantastic! The set design and direction were static and unimaginative.

The Flying Dutchman
Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee
This has always been my favorite opera and it's so rarely done that even a so-so performance is welcome. The orchestra was SPLENDID!!!! The men's chorus work was EXCELLENT. The staging was lacking -- I especially found the circling arms during the spinning song silly and distracting. I thought the women's costumes were "corny" and Senta's garb was too drab. The tenor was ok; the two bass-baritones were EXCELLENT. The final scene -- when Senta sacrifices herself was very moving -- her last pose was perfect. The pantomime of the young Senta and Mary during the overture was effective in setting the stage for the ensuing story.

Great music; static staging
Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee
First of all, a shout out to the chorus and orchestra- they did a great jot! Wagner's powerful music came through. I liked the opening sequence during the overture showing the young Senta's infatuation with the story of the Dutchman, which set the stage for her actions in the opera. I was disappointed in the staging, however. I know Wagner isn't known for having a lot of action, but the soloists' arias sometimes made me feel like I was at a concert, instead of an opera. Since such decisions are made by the stage director, I don't blame the singers. The final moments of the opera struck me as strange, when all of a sudden the chorus paired up and walked off stage, while a stop-action Senta stood there, with her arms out.

The Florentine's Dutchman is sure to be a hit
Marcus Center for the Performing Arts - Milwaukee
With this list of internationally celebrated Wagnerian singers, new costumes and an amazing new scenic design, this exciting opera is sure to knock your socks off. The legend of the Dutchman is a tale for the ages about a cursed seaman with no home. He seeks his escape from a curse that banishes him to the sea with but one hope, that the love of a woman will set him free. This is opera presents some of the most challenging vocal roles (filled buy some of the best voices you may ever hear). Check the Florentine's website for bios of these amazing singers.

The Flying Dutchman - Our 1st, but not last opera!
Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis
This was our first opera and it was such a great experience. As "20 something's" we're always looking for new things to try in order to broaden our horizons, and at first I was hesitant that an opera would be too "stuffy" for our laid back personalities. After this experience I would say you definitely need to overlook the stereotypes and keep an open mind. The Flying Dutchman was a great story and well told in this production. We wore jeans and nice shirts and felt totally fine! The theater attendants and employees didn't give us a second glance, although we did get the evil eye from a couple older ticket holders =P Don't let the stereotypical crowds that attend operas scare you away, you may enjoy it more than you would have ever imagined.

So-so
Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis
The music was beautiful, but I often had to close my eyes to enjoy it because the staging was so disappointing. Too much reliance on poorly filmed backdrops, which were sometimes laughable.
