Fiddler on the Roof on Tour
In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.
Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.
The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.
Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."
As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.
"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.
The show was Fantastic, such a wonderful performance, and amazing music!
Cast and crew were excellent. Made me feel like I was a part of the reality!! The venue was beautiful as always however the AC was not working as well and it was uncomfortable in our seats during the show
It was an amazing production and performance! He music and dancing was unbelievable. It was a privilege to experience Broadway locally. It is our hope to return.
Excellent choreography Masterful performance Made an old favorite come to life
Parking easy, building beautiful, play spectacular!!
It’s a phenomenal story that must be seen. Everyone should go out and watch it.
The production was wonderful, with the exception of the audio. It was not loud enough. I so wish it was because it is such a great musical, and produced well.
I have seen Fiddler on the Roof 5 times in the last 30 years so it is safe to say this is my favorite play of all time. This particular performance was outstanding! The entire cast was phenomenal, especially Tevye who added some unexpected comedy to break the tension in some scenes. This was a great date for my wife and I away from our 5 children (not all daughters haha)!
This show was one of the best I've seen. The singing, dancing, and acting was superb. Truly entertaining!
This was the best show I have ever seen in my life. The music, dancing/singing, and acting were outstanding! The energy of all the players and the brilliant performances will long live in my memory. I was also impressed with the organization of the Scranton Cultural Center. Thank you.
The book, music, and lyrics of "Fiddler on the Roof" are near perfection unto themselves, but most of us know that even a perfect show can be spoiled by a lackluster cast or a bad director. In the case of this national tour of "Fiddler," the cast, direction, and design are just a brilliant as the show itself. Though an outstanding director, the men and women in the company brought depth and love into their characters. They didn't just tell a story; they immersed the audience in an experience of celebration, joy, love, loss, faith, and oppression. I do with Yenta had better understood her character's much-needed function of comic relief. She left too many laughs unexplored and too many comedic opportunities behind. Other than that, I literally laughed and cried. This cast, the direction and design, were a triumph! Mazel tov!
What a wonderful show. Can’t say enough good things about the show and cast. It was a memorial experience.
Scranton venue is just beautiful and easy to get to. The musical itself is an old time favorite for me. The cast was exceptional including all the singing and dancing
The performance of Fiddler on th Roof at the Scranton Cultural Center was magical. I've always wanted to see it, and I am grateful I saw this production. Thank you to the actors, the musicians and everyone involved in creating a wonderful experience.
Fabulous performance. We enjoyed it more than I can say…
Your seat map was off by about 8 rows. We would up in the very rear of the theater.
Masterful choreography! I loved the authenticity of cast and costuming. Good visibility and could hear well. An awesome performance!
Went to see "Fiddler on the Roof" Friday night. Ticketmaster was down for maintenance when tried to show them my digital tickets. Not happy at all.
Halfway through the opening number we knew it was going to be a great show. Johnathan Hashmonay portrayal of Tevye was fantastic. The rest of the cast was also great and blended well. Truly an enjoyable show. Orchestra was great too. We were hoping for a entertaining show and they did not disappoint. Thanks & Bravo!
4 girlfriends went to see Fiddler. The singing, dancing and acting was wonderful !!! 5/5 stars to the cast. These was a standing ovation which the your group totally earned. Thank you all for a wonderful evening
