Les Misérables on Tour
Theater producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh created his — dare we say it? — revolutionary new production of Les Misérables to commemorate the 25th anniversary of composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Alain Boublil's musical, a rousing sung-through story of the Paris underclass' failed 1832 rebellion. After being seen around the world, Mackintosh's brisk new version opened in 2019 in the lavishly refurbished Sondheim Theatre (formerly Queen's Theatre) in London, thereby extending Les Mis' record as the West End's longest-running musical.
Mackintosh notably replaced the original production's famous revolving stage with a stream of projections derived from original drawings by Victor Hugo, upon whose 1862 novel Les Misérables is based. The current production stars Jon Robyns as Valjean, the tortured petty criminal whose pursuit by the steely and serpentine Javert (Bradley Jaden) drives the show. As the tragic Fantine, Carrie Hope Fletcher sings the show-stopping ballad "I Dreamed a Dream," and Shan Ako plays the equally ill-fated Eponine, who delivers the heartbreaking "On My Own." Surging ensemble numbers have been leaving audiences tingling.
About Les Misérables
The idea for a musical based on Victor Hugo's novel came to Alain Boublil during a performance of Oliver!, another show famously set among the proletariat. The concept album he recorded with composer Schönberg led to its first French stage version in 1980. Cameron Mackintosh's first English-language production opened in London in 1985, and Les Mis migrated to Broadway two years later. It has since been seen by more than 120 million people in 52 countries and 22 languages.
Set in the gritty streets of Paris during an explosive period of French history, Les Misérables conveys the poverty, danger and degradation of lower-class existence through magnificent songs such as "I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and "Master of the House." And the new production, according to The Guardian's Miriam Gillinson, could not be more contemporary, arriving as it does "at a time when all of us — in our own way — are hoping for a brighter tomorrow."
Loved the new settings and scenery. Nothing lost to demise of the turntable. Voices wonderful and overall captivating.
Overall great performance of a classic! Loved the new effects with the back screen!!
Althoug we found the audio left a lot to be desired, we loved the show. And it seemed quite dark.
I think this was the most outstanding theater performance I have ever witnessed. I expected second- or third-class cast members, but we got first-class in my opinion. Several solo performances rocked the building. The scenery was magnificent. I can't understand how they can do that with a traveling show. I note that the Orlando Sentinel newspaper gave it also raving reviews. I would go back to see that one again any time.
It was very well done. It is always a moving story.
Les Miz is one of my favorite plays of all time. It has it all with love story, French history, death, and war. And it has the classic justice versus mercy conflict going on with felon turned saint. J. Mark McVey as Jean Valjean was outstanding. Andrew Varela as Javert, Betsy Morgan as Fantine, Chasen harmon as Eponine and the rest of the cast was equally as good.
I've seen this show 6 times and this was by far the best production yet! Would see it again this week if I could. New sets and staging really enhanced performance. ALL voices were excellent. "Bring Him Home" made the hairs stand up on my arms!!! Simply cannot say enough good things about this performance. BRAVO!! BRAVO!! BRAVO!!
My girlfriend had been after me for some time to go to a show with her. She and her family recommended Les Miserables. Although long, the show was nice and kept me entertained for the most part. I think there was only once or twice where I felt the show lost my interest. Overall I had a good time.
I have always wanted to see Les Miserables in theater ever since I read the book in high school. It is an awesome musical, it could do without some of the adult gestures and jokes. I really enjoyed it and if it comes back to San Antonio I will see it again.
Excellent production!!! A throughly awesome production and singing was tremendous.
Ive seen this play many times and so I came in with high expectations for certain character's. In this show i felt like Valjean performed at a high level and was awesome to watch. Unfortunately the actress who played Fantine screamed more than sang and I was very disappointed. So many things wrong there I won't even comment. Cosette was average and needs to learn voice control - too high and pitchy. The rest of the cast was at average to above average and I was pleased. The surprise for me was the actress who played Eponine. She is CLEARLY too talented not to play a main role in this or another play. Her voice was the only one that touches you, complete control of vocals and she brings it like Jennifer Hudson. When she finished her solo everyone around me was saying "WOW!". I don't have her name handy but I was watching the 7:30pm show on 1/8/12.
THE SHOW WAS SPECTACULAR, AWESOME, MAGICAL! I SAW THE SHOW LAST TIME APROX. 15 YEARS AGO. THE PREMISE WAS AND IS ALWAYS THE SAME...AMAZING! THE SPECIAL EFFECTS WERE SPECTACULAR AND SOMETHING NEW SINCE I SAW THE SHOW LAST. NUMBER FOUR WAS THE BEST AND THE PERFORMERS WERE AWESOME. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE NUMBER FIVE, HOPEFULLY WON'T TAKE AS LONG. AGAIN THE SHOW WAS SPECTACULAR, AWESOME, AND MAGICAL
My wife and I sat in Row AA left center orchestra. Sound acoustics were very poor. Could only understand maybe 36 words out of the entire 1st half. This was our first time to see Les Miserables. My guess is that 95% of the audience had probably seen Les Mis several times before and knew all the words and the music. So it didn't matter whether they could understand any of the dialogue. Kinda of like going to an opera sung in Italian when one doesn't speak Italian. We left the theatre at intermission
This was the last show in San Antonio. It was great. One of the understudies for Juan (sp) Valjuan was UNBELIEVABLE!!! He had he most beautiful voice and range. The entire ensemble was great. Just wish I could get better seats in the future.
This show was amazing. The actors and orchestra are undeniably tremendously talented. I will definately see again. A show I'll never forget.
Wonderful production! We had the option of seeing this production in Alabama or San Antonio...we chose San Antonio b/c of all the tourism activities in S.A. The production didn't come to New Orleans (we were very sad about this -- We were wondering why the tour did not include New Orleans...hope it will some to N.O. this upcoming season!). The Les Miz performers were great! The sound/accoustics were fantastic! The nite we saw it, the main character (Jean Valjean) was not the lead so we were a little concerned ....the replacement was great! Such wonderful performances by all!
Amazing in every way. Set was amazing as was the cast.
Great story line with incredible performances and wonderful music. As soon as the final curtain fell, I was wanting to see the show again!
My fiancé took me to see her most favorite musical which I had never seen. I was stunned at the talent and story. Go see it.
Tje singers were Great.... They did a wonderful job...I will see again in bigger Theatur and closer to the stage.....the performers were unforgettable
