    Hubbard Street rocks!!

by gocapp on 4/12/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

This dance troope was one of the most talented ones I have seen. The numbers chosen for this performance were exceptional as well. I had 2 little boys on one side of me and they were riveted as well. That's saying something. The show was a fantastic blend of style and music and I loved every minute of it. I liked that it was 3 separate dances and choreographers as well. Enjoyed being exposed to different styles and having an intermission between them. This was a real group effort. No one was "stealing the show" which was really nice. Although I will say Jessica Tong had some amazing talent and movement.

    Great Dancing but Disappointing Choreography

by PSCinLA on 4/12/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

We saw Hubbard perform on two occasions in Los Angeles. The first time we saw them, they danced to the music of Rolling Stones and it was magical! We were so impressed that we could not wait to see them again. The next time was at the Hollywood Bowl, where the experience was less than enjoyable - the stage was dark and it was impossible to see. When we saw that they would perform at the Ahmanson, we could not wait for the show. Overall, we thought that the dancing was extraordinary but we did not find the choreography to be that interesting and at times actually boring. Only the last piece to the music of Ravel was incredible. Overall we were disappointed and are not likely to come see the company again at a live performance.

HSDC RENEWED HOPE FOR MODERN DANCE

by WISELATINADANCER on 4/12/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

I loved the music and the movement in all three pieces. Not crazy about the use of props in 27.52. Overall choreography was exciting and dynamic. "Bad Walking" was wonderful and the dancers were so well trained it was refreshing. The sight lines for dance at the Ahmanson are TERRIBLE. You have to sit dead center in this venue to catch all the action. We were sitting on the right hand side of the theatre, paid alot for the tickets and were not happy with the seats. Be careful when you order tickets for dance here. It renewed my hope for modern dance....

    HSDC's inspiring performance

by SFLAdancer on 4/12/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

With Artistic Director Glenn Edgerton at the helm, HSDC's performance at the Ahmanson on Friday eve was a refreshing change to the LA dance scene. With dancers versed in classical and contemporary/modern techniques, the company brought moving works of Ingar, Kylian, and Naharin to life onstage. A range of emotions could be felt through the audience, from intimacy to humor, and companionship to isolation. I hope presenters are able to bring more such companies to LA stages in the future.

This was such a great performance. They evoked a large range of emotion. The creativity and use of the simple sets was amazing along with the uniqueness of movement from the dancers. I found myself wanting more.

    Who says dancers aren't athletes!

by NastySue on 4/12/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

Some of the most imaginative choreography and beautiful music but the dancers are in a category all by themselves. What they do with their bodies and how they draw you in is incredible.

    Hubbard Street Dance so unique.

by cherigirl on 4/12/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

Incredible dancers, each dance told a story for your own interpretation. My Family thoroughly enjoyed the performances. The dancers seemed to float on stage, like a feathers in the wind.

    Hubbard Street a disappointment

by Coila on 4/12/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

I was looking forward to this event with so much excitement. It had been several years since I last saw the company perform and I was awe struck by their exuberance and technical prowess. So it's with a lot of regret that I have to say I was thoroughly disappointed. The choreography was so utilitarian and modern to the point of being expressionless, bodies thrown around the stage almost as if they were tools and at the mercy of the choreographers "concept". The music, with the exception of Bolero, was atonal and pretension; someone speaking french backwards is not all that interesting as a backdrop for dance. And finally the costumes were drab and didn't accentuate the dancers bodies. I hope that in the future Hubbard Street choreography can revisit its earlier roots in ballet and jazz and find the joy.

    Hubbard Street 's soft landing

by BCMB on 4/12/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

Well performed, excellent dancers, overall experience left me surprisingly under whelmed. Perhaps choreography and music didn't push my buttons.

    Amazing Dancing yet felt Detached

by Kuji on 4/11/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

Both of us felt disappointed in this event. The dancing/dancers were outstanding, impeccable in their synchronism, and quite amazing... to see what the human body is capable of doing when there is focus, precision, agility, strength, and fluidity is inspiring. The disappointment arose from feeling detached from the dancers... recognizing ourselves as an observer/spectator rather than being someone who is drawn into what is happening on stage - a sense of curiosity as to what might occur next was not present for us (although we did have a 'favorite moment' where this curiosity arose). Also, we decided we will more than likely not go back to the Ahmanson Theatre (this was our third time there) - the seating does not bring about a sense of ease and safety. Even though there is 'not a bad seat in the house', it is cumbersome to get in and out of the seats when there are no center aisles and one row is 40-50 seats wide. At the same time, we feel appreciative and grateful for this production and all that went into it (dancers, choreographers, lighting, costumes, props, etc.) May all those involved continue to experience movement and happiness.

    gotta see them

by malibu2009 on 4/11/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

Any time HSD plays in your town, go. Don't think twice. They delivered one of the best modern dance performaces of the year in LA, and combined some amazing choreography and dance-endurance in the first act with humor in the final set.

    Hubbard street: artistic, athletic, provocative!

by Lavy on 4/10/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

This was a very fine evening. The dancers were professional, the pre-show discussion was interesting, and the lighting, music, and costumes enhanced the pieces nicely.

    Hubbard goes esoteric

by jared4u on 4/10/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

Beautiful dancing, obscure and disjointed choreography with fabulous scenes and incoherent dramaturgy.

    Totally Impressive

by LeggyC on 4/10/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

The dancers are remarkable! They are in fantastic shape, of course, but what made the performance great was the choreography, which really showed off their physical abilities and expressive powers. The choreography was very interesting and creative. I just loved it!

    Entrancing Creativity

by JaBeKa on 4/10/10Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

Body movement made in to art. The creative direction peaks again and again in the beautifully mastered choreography of this show. Innovative, captivating movement that's unpredictable makes this a memorable evening. The quiet costuming frames every move and every shadow; dancer interaction with sets are fresh and unexpected. Truly entrancing.

Excellent dance company with sly humour

by Anonymous on 11/1/09University of Denver - Newman Center - Gates Concert Hall - Denver

I went to see the piece by Nacho Duato, but loved the other pieces as well. The performances were crisp and often quite humorous. A great evening of dance.
