The Phantom of the Opera on Tour

The longest-running show in Broadway history celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2018 with a spectacular new road production currently touring North America.

The Phantom of the Opera came to life when composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Charles Hart adapted French writer Gaston Leroux's 1910 horror novel about a disfigured musical genius that haunts the Paris Opera. Harold Prince directed the 1986 West End premiere in London. The show arrived in New York in 1988, with Michael Crawford in the title role, and went on to set box office records after winning seven Tony awards, including Best Musical.

Early reviews were outstanding. Clive Barnes of ‘The New York Post' lauded the musical as "a piece of impeccably crafted musical theater"; Howard Kissel of the ‘New York Daily News' called it "spectacular entertainment." It became a pop-culture blockbuster on the strength of its story, songs, and production values, of course, but also thanks to its unforgettable iconography (that mask!) and buzz-generating replica productions equaling those found on Broadway and the West End.

Director Cameron Mackintosh's new production of Phantom maintains these stellar standards. Rather than radically change the original, Mackintosh's revamp adds a fresh coat of technologically enhanced dazzle, grandeur, and pyrotechnic thrills to match its emotional fireworks.

Everything about this grandly produced new adaptation of Phantom is bigger and more spectacular than before: A 52-piece orchestra supports soaring melodies heard through a 200-speaker surround-sound system. Its famous chandelier, designed by Howard Eaton, contains more than 6,000 beads. And more than 1,200 costume pieces, many designed by Maria Björnson for the show's original production, are as colorfully joyous as the music itself.

Quentin Oliver Lee fills the title role's cape and mask to both visual and vocal perfection. Eva Tavares hits all the right high notes as soprano singer Christine Daaé, object of the Phantom's obsession. Texas-born Jordan Craig takes on the role of Christine's dashing childhood friend Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny. And Trista Moldovan adds comic relief as the irrepressible diva Carlotta Giudicelli.

The "music of the night" lives on in a show that remains forever new by remaining true to its magnificent origins.

    A Veteran Audience Member WOWED!

by anneionic on 12/9/19Fox Cities PAC - Appleton

I have seen the Phantom many times, starting 25 years ago when it opened, then at the Weidner Center in the 90's and in Las Vegas countless times. This production moved me more than any. The Phantom's voice was captivating and hypnotic. His emotion in the final scene was so raw it moved me to tears. The chemistry between the Phantom and Christine was sizzling in the "Point of No Return". A standing ovation goes to the set designer, the costume designer and the orchestra, which was staffed with many very talented local musicians. I could go on about everything in the show from the pyrotechnics to each actors attention to their own "story" and the hilarious diva antics of Carlotta. Don't miss this show!

    Christmas Experience

    by S. D. on 12/9/19Fox Cities PAC - Appleton

Absolutely love the production and the show! This is an annual event that I do with my son which makes it really special. The only downfall was the PAC has now decided to let people in with bags of chips. The couple next to us ate three bags which means we literally missed the entire first part of the event because of how loud it was! I feel like we paid a lot of money for these tickets and that was truly disappointing!

    Wonderful performance

We had box seats with limited view. Trust them when they say limited view because it is. Fortunately, we were permitted to move our chairs into the next area so we could see the stage better. The music and special effects were great. We enjoyed the performance very much

    Phantom of the Opera

    by DanielAllison40 on 12/8/19Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

This was my mine and my wife's first Orpheum experience and Phantom of the Opera has been on our list of touring shows we wanted to see for a loooong time. We were absolutely blown away by the singing and acting talent of everyone in the cast, but especially Phantom and Christine. The set was incredible, too. Very good job to all involved. Break a leg wherever you may be touring next!

    Nastalgic and great

by BrianMack on 12/8/19Fox Cities PAC - Appleton

It’s been 20+ years since we saw our last Andrew Lloyd Weber Broadway performance. But back in the day, I saw many performances. The opening numbers brought tears to my eyes as the familiar music and lyrics rung out their score. It was all true to the original (nothing gimicky) and I am thankful for that. The singing was fantastic by all involved. Christine and the Phantom were, of course excellent. All well done! Thank you for the trip down memory lane which so often disappoints but in a rare exception exceeded my expectations.

It was wonderful and very accommodating

by Saddlegirl on 12/4/19Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

I suffer with Vertigo. Our seats were 2 rows behind the orchestra pit so very close to the stage. Unfortunately, it was too close for my vertigo to handle. I pushed myself through the first act but at intermission I had to go to the lobby and not return. Disappointed I would miss the rest of the show, a staff member asked if I was "ok". I told her what was happening and she got me a chair and put it by the hallway screen. I was able to finish watching the show from there. Very kind and considerate.

    Enjoyable

    by L. O. on 12/4/19Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

I have seen this show before and did not rate this as high as the previous one. I felt the orchestra overpowered the singers in the most dramatic louder music. As always the seats are too tight at Orpheum. Not sure I can get my husband to go with me again.

Magic of the Night (and day)

by Peajay on 12/4/19Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

My partner and I have attended three different productions of Phantom over the years. This rendition was by far our favorite. The technological effects were well-executed, the plotline was clear, and the singing was powerful. Indeed, we were surprised to learn afterwards that the female lead in the matinee we attended was played by the understudy because she was simply outstanding. We loved this production and were so glad that we drove through a blizzard to get there!
