Elf: The Musical On Tour

Since its release in 2003, Elf has risen to the rank of a modern Christmas-movie classic. The film tells the story of Buddy, a North Pole toy-maker who slowly comes to the realization that he's not like the other elves (his 6'3" height being but the first tip-off). Soon he sets off to New York City in search of his real father, leaving a trail of trashed-up department stores, snowball-fight victims, and syrup-soaked spaghetti in his wake. Will Ferrell's hilarious yet heartfelt portrayal of Buddy has transformed the character into a Christmas icon on par with Santa, Rudolph, and Frosty, and the legend of Elf only grows each holiday season, as new generations discover it.

While a much-rumored sequel has yet to materialize, Buddy's tale has found another home on the stage. In November 2010, the musical adaptation of Elf debuted on Broadway, with an original score by the Tony Award-nominated team of composer Matthew Sklar and lyricist Chad Beguelin, and a book by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (The Producers) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) that takes some liberties with the film's plot. For one, the play is narrated by Santa Claus himself, rather than the Papa Elf character. But thanks to jaunty, wintry showtunes like "Christmastown" and "Sparklejollytwinklejingley," Elf: The Musical has become a phenomenon in its own right. After smashing box office records at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway, the play has spawned a touring production, a soundtrack album, and an animated TV-special offshoot on NBC (2014's Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas). In 2018, the play hit the road again, venturing across the United States to ensure that seeing Elf on stage remains an annual holiday tradition on par with watching Elf on screen.

    Originality shines but something missing

by Gingercoat on 1/2/18Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

A number of original songs helps this musical keep the attention of the audience. Elf was fun and uplifting. Slightly different story line than the beloved movie and many classic lines left out, which could have added to the performance. The actors were great, though.

    Not the best

by Tifflav on 12/23/17The Theater at Madison Square Garden - New York

I saw elf in the city a few years back and it was amazing. This time however was not great. Yes, some parts were funny but they barely followed the story line. The tickets are overpriced, seats are uncomfortable and just was not worth the money spent. Don’t waste your time.

    Excellent holiday show!

by Carolynnnnnnnn on 12/21/17The Theater at Madison Square Garden - New York

I have seen the movie several times and this is the first time that I saw the play. It was even more hysterical than the movie! The seats we had in center of 300 section were perfect. I don't think there is a bad seat in the theater. I would go again next year. Norm from Cheers played Santa Clause and he was a riot.

    Elf the Musical

by DCexpress on 12/21/17The Theater at Madison Square Garden - New York

Fantastic! Great show for the entire family! If you like the movie, this will be right up your alley. Wish our seats were better, however, we bought them the day of the show. Section 204....off to side, still good seats, just off center enough to not have a fantastic view! Did meet a great usher who helped us tremendously, named Frankie, who was just a bonus to this package!

    Elf was okay

by Princesalauren on 12/20/17The Theater at Madison Square Garden - New York

Elf is one of my favorite movies and the reenactment as a musical was sub part. It’s not something I would go crazy about but a good time.

There is only one Will Ferrell. This was a little disappointing as it was quite long for the content and a little goofy, which again Will Ferrell can pull this off like no other.

    Skip it!!

by jlrogg on 12/20/17The Theater at Madison Square Garden - New York

Had I never seen the movie, MAYBE I would like it, but doubt it. The three people in my party gave it a 3, 4, and 2. Realllly bad acting. Buddy was NOT funny at ALL! They skipped a lot of the stuff in original movie and added cheesy things. JUst was not good at all.

    Left at intermission

by MLMU on 12/20/17The Theater at Madison Square Garden - New York

Loved the movie Elf - went with my family - all adults now. Music was eh, jokes were over the heads of children but not really funny for adults. We enjoyed the orchestra and the venue was lovely- MSG NYC, but we were bored and left. Other people also left at intermission and we all were happy to get out.

    First 10 minutes were great!

by Anonymous on 12/20/17The Theater at Madison Square Garden - New York

The first ten minutes were great. My three boys were really enjoying it. That is until the 4 6 foot 6 giants sat in front of them. We tried changing our seat but nothing work. My kids couldn’t see and we left after the intermisssion. Not to self, no more shows until they are taller.
