Funny and I want a Dean Martin CD now

by VirginianVixen on 1/31/12Carolina Theatre - Durham

I'm 30 so I don't recall anything by the Rat Pack. I didn't research anything ahead of time or listen to the music. I found it quite amusing. Everyone said the casting was dead on. The only negatives were that towards the end a woman came out to sing. They did not introduce her and as we left many people were asking who it was suppose to be. I found out online it was Ava Gardner but it would have been nice to introduce her. Also for me I wanted to absorb the atmosphere and really feel the 1960s club. Mad Men, Pan Am, the Playboy Club. The 60s are in. However too many of the jokes were modern and talking about current day and referencing the fact that they were dead to really get into the 60s. I would have rather it be authentic. I haven't been to that area of Durham in a long time and they've really made a lot of improvements. It was gorgeous and the renovations to the Carolina will be done in 2013. One thing I hope they fix is every time someone walks in and out a lot of light comes in to the theatre making it quite distracting. But I like the small intimacy of it and the true to age renovation.

A Tribute to the Ratpack Magic

by Anonymous on 1/29/12Carolina Theatre - Durham

You won't think you're watching (or close your eyes and think you're listening to) Sinatra, Martin, Davis and Bishop, but it's nonetheless an entertaining effort to recreate their legendary Vegas show and the chemistry between them that works best when Sandy Hackett does his Joey Bishop comedy bits and engages the crowd. If you're a Ratpack fan you'll enjoy the show.

    Not Legends

by mestocker on 1/29/12Carolina Theatre - Durham

If you're thinking this is going to be like a Legends performance with Sinatra, Davis, Jr., and Martin, it is not. Sinatra was the best of the group. Davis, Jr. danced better than he sang, and Martin sounded good, but his repetitive mannerisms and prancing about on stage became tiresome. The performers were at their best when they interacted together, which was the last 15 minutes of the performance, and if the whole performance could have been that good, I would recommend the show. About two-thirds of the way through, a woman came out and did a number, and while she sounded great, it was very random. They also started the show as if these guys were coming down from heaven for one last performance, but that story line never really got tied up at the end. Also, they announce the time period (1960s) as if they are back in that era, but do jokes about present-day people, products, etc. There was at least one song where they sneaked a recording in that wouldn't have been noticeable if not for the bad fake piano playing of the pianist.

    Rat Pack Show

    by DJMC53 on 1/29/12Carolina Theatre - Durham

The Rat Pack Show was a thrilling step back into time with Frank, Dino, Sammy & Joey. The songs, jokes, presentation and aura of the entertainers was reached with ease and comfort. What a great reminder of what entertainment was like just a few years ago.

    Like living in History

by thinkinoutloud on 1/29/12Carolina Theatre - Durham

Over all the show was good and entertaining but not as good as the one we saw 2 or 3 years ago in Raleigh. It was clear who Sammy and Dean were but in the beginning I thought Frank was Joey and Joey was Frank. Once Joey started talking it was obvious. Everyone sounded like the original except Sammy though I realize thats a tough one to find.
