What a voice, what a stage presence. Fantastic. Unfortunately, Tommy Castro opened for her. And did so at a punishing sound level - whoever was working the sound board for them was a total hack. After enduring that (there was a rush to get earplugs!), the evening became unforgettable.
I don't know who is responsible for determining a band's volume, but I have no desire to be subjected to a miked up bass drum that sends an ear-splitting and chest pounding thud out with every damn beat--along with the volume of the other instruments being too loud also--as was the case with the Castro show. Does someone really believe that can be a pleasant experience?? I couldn't stand being in the room after 2-3 songs worth of that pain. It ruins the whole experience. Thankfully we could leave and return after Castro was done causing permanent hearing loss to hear a soul-blues diva always at her best with a fantastic backing band at a volume that was perfect. Bettye is a inadequately heralded treasure in the blues world--a true queen who's not a shouter. Her voice and charm can warm your soul like nobody else.
Tommy Castro--Great Show, We've really missed you guys, come back soon. Gotta have the Sax guy back.
After hearing Tommy Castro play I was grateful that he was only there as the first act. The sound mix was terrible and it was so loud, you couldn't understand a word he was singing about-so no I wouldn't recommend T Castro, I was not a fan. Now let me tell you about Miss Bettye LaVette, oh my god, what an incredible concert experience that was. What a gift she is to music. Such a powerful singer, goes right to your soul and leaves goosebumps behind. She could have sang anything and it would have been ok with the crowd. Simply Amazing and I am glad she finally got to Milwaukee and hope she returns again and again, can't believe no one brought her here before now. I hope everyone gets a chance to see MIss Bettye once in their lives.
We enjoyed the whole night except was TOO loud. Didn' t know Tommy Castro but will be on the lookout for them. Did book the tickets for one song, "I was Born By the River" that Bettye sang two days before Obama's Inaugration and tho Bono had performed, Springsteen, etc.,etc., on my DVR just replayed her over and over. So was of course dissapointed when she didn't sing that. She is a great performer but wish she would do more classics. Enjoyed it.
Loved Tommy Castro and his new lineup,The Painkillers!Great hard edged blues/rock.I did kinda miss the horns from Tommy's old lineup. Bettye LaVette....Great old R&B feel, enjoyed her voice, dancing and commentary and tribute to the late Etta James tremendously!!
Tommy demonstrated a renewed dedication to his ART !!! He delivered his usual party atnosphere with a new level of maturity and precision perhapse unmet in my 64 years of loving and living the blues. Once again thanks Tommy, see you next time.
Fabulous concert as usual. Tommy is one of my favorites. Great venue!
This was the third time we have seen Tommy Castro perform. We make an overnight trip from Louisville KY to Indy just for the show. We were very excited to see this great band perform. Tommy's high energy full room performance fills the room with energy.
