About

Everybody look around, 'cause the Tony Award®-winning Best Musical that took the world by storm is back and coming to Chicago.

THE WIZ returns "home" to stages across America in an all-new Broadway-bound tour, the first one in 40 years.

This groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz changed the face of Broadway - from its iconic score packed with soul,  gospel, rock, and finger-snapping '70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy's journey to find her place in a contemporary world.

Featuring a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls (and others), director Schele Williams (The Notebook, revival of Disney's Aida), award-winning choreographer JaQuel Knight (Beyoncé's "Single Ladies," Black is King), additional material by Tony-nominated and Emmy-nominated writer and TV host Amber Ruffin ("The Amber Ruffin Show," "Late Night With Seth Meyers"), Joseph Joubert (music supervision, orchestrations, & music arrangements), Allen René Louis (vocal arrangements, music arrangements), and Emmy Award®-winning music director and Grammy Award®-winning writer, Adam Blackstone (Dance Music Arranger), are conjuring up an Oz unlike anything ever seen before.  A dynamite infusion of ballet, jazz, and modern pop will bring a whole new groove to easing on down the road.

    The Wonderful Wiz

by Kier on 12/20/23Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Excellent show. Everyone was phenomenal! I came. The night that the scarecrow was replaced with the understudy. The scarecrow understudy was okay. The TinMan and the lion were wonderful! Dorthy and Evelin were exceptional! I loved the poppy’s. All the other dancers were phenomenal as well. I love your representation of the yellow brick road. I also enjoyed how you stopped the music while in Oz and changed the dance. The choreography Of the dancing was exceptional. In the last song, Dorothy clicked her heels three times and one of the most beautiful moments of the song she was excellent. I saw the show in Chicago. I plan on going to New York to see it again. Already have my tickets.

    Toto? TOTO?

by matt on 12/13/23Cadillac Palace - Chicago

"The Wiz"is one of my all-time favorite shows! I was lucky enough to see the original with Stephanie Mills. To this day, thinking about that show, moves me like no other. So when I heard they were going to do the show again and we were lucky enough to see it in its "Pre-Broadway"run, I was thrilled. And to be fair, when the curtain went up, I was like, "This is going to be good!"I loved the "tip of the hat"to the movie with everything starting out black and white and suddenly after the tornado there was color to everything. But that's where the wonder stopped. Listen the lead actress had a wonderful voice. But every single song....does NOT have to be a show-stopper. Why in every single song are we holding out the second to last note (all of the actors) to milk a shout and loud applause from the audience? Let it happen naturally! Also....where is Toto? Toto is actually important to the story! The dog saves them a couple of times! When they are attacked, it's Toto who fends off the monsters. Now....what was the reason for all of the characters falling under the "power"of the "Poppies"? In the original, it's the Tin-Man's tears that help alert everyone. In this production, Dorothy realizes the potential danger and stands up and says, "We need to get back on the Yellow-Brick Road!"She then is...fine! How did that happen? Then she goes from character to character and says, "Hey! we need to get out of here!"The character she is talking to basically responds, "Oh...ok"and the "danger"of the Poppies is over. *shrugs*. Now.....let's talk about the large set piece that slides in for the Evilene's throne which at one point, is treated like a prop from a high school musical because it becomes a prison for Dorothy in the same space where Evilene had just been sitting receiving "bad news". Now my biggest issue with this production.....the low-key homophobia. It has always been a thing about the Lion being a little ...well....gay. But in this production, we also get a gay scarecrow that is played for the audience laughs. At times, even the Tin-Man became "gay"(i.e. "He touched me! He TOUCHED me!"after talking to The Wiz). This was also played for laughs. It felt ... gross. But then the beginning of the 2nd act is the wham-bam of it all...because we are going to play up the "gay"in the characters for laughs but guess what? We are also going to "borrow"heavily from the gay Black Ballroom culture for a dance sequence in Oz. It just seemed weird to make fun of, and borrow from, the same community for your show. It just didn't make sense. I walked out of that show feeling sad, made fun of, let down, confused, and wishing for a tornado to hit the theatre to take this production out.

Broadway Wiz is a Dream Come True!

by AlishaOnDemand on 12/13/23Cadillac Palace - Chicago

The Wiz is the very first movie I ever saw. My family and I watched it every time it came on cable television. Years later, we hunted down the VHS and watched it faithfully during the holidays and beyond. Back then it was my mom, my brother and I. We vowed if it ever came to Broadway. We would see it either in New York or as it traveled. Mom passed away in 2019 so she didn’t get to be there. My brother is confined to a nursing home so he couldn’t come. I am tremendously blessed to have gotten one of the last few seats. Seeing it with my daughter was amazing. I enjoyed every second of this performance. It was everything I ever dreamed it could be. If God makes a way I will see it again. Break a leg for the rest of your tour!

    The show was EXCELLENT!!!

by Diane on 12/13/23Cadillac Palace - Chicago

The singing, dancing, costumes, stage designs, special effects, everything was tremendous. We thoroughly enjoyed the show. I took my husband to celebrate his birthday. Initially he wasn’t thrilled to go, but during the show he repeatedly commented on how good or great it was. At the end, he said it was excellent and a great way to celebrate his birthday!!👏🏾👏🏾 I’m telling others that it is a must see. If it were playing here again, I definitely would see it again!!!! Excellence at it’s best!!

This production of the WIZ was great! What a talented group of individuals. If you have a chance to see it in your city, I highly suggest attending. A big nod to the Tinman, Phillip Johnson Richardson--what a voice.

We traveled from Miami to Chicago, and the cast did not disappoint! We enjoyed every bit of it. And we eased on down the road back home to Miami.
