The Longest Johns on Tour
What started as a group of friends singing sea shanties in their kitchen has quickly become an international sensation. At least that's the story behind Bristol-based a capella folk group The Longest Johns. Crowds can expect to be transported to a maritime state of mind, with lyrics and vocal harmonies that pay homage to a life lived on the open sea. The group's salty spirit and unusual folks tunes, now backed by a full instrumental section, hearken back to the sailors of yore. After a rapid rise to success, the band of four friends is bringing their catchy, viral sea shanties stateside on the Smoke & Oakum Tour 2022. So make sure to hoist a beverage, grab tickets and sing along with hits from the group's fourth studio album, 2022's Smoke & Oakum.
The Longest Johns Live in Concert
The Longest Johns was formed seemingly on a whim one night by friends Josh Bowker, Andy Yates, Jonathaon Darley, and Dave Robinson. After an evening of singing sea shanties at a friend's barbecue in 2012, the Bristol-based group decided they should make their favorite pastime official. Branding themselves as an a capella folk shanty group, The Longest Johns released their debut EP, Bones in the Ocean, in 2013. They quickly earned a warm reception from local fans and were invited to perform at the 2015 Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival. In 2016, the group released their debut album, Written in Salt, followed by Between Wind and Water in 2018. The track "Wellerman" was included in the second album and would later turn into a viral hit in 2021. The Longest Johns added a new dimension to their performances in 2020 with the addition of instruments on the release of their third studio album, Cures What Ails Ya. In 2021, "Wellerman" gained viral international attention, and the band signed with Decca Records. The Longest Johns released their fourth album, Smoke & Oakum, in 2022, accompanied by a global tour of the same name.
Seen them on their first U.S. tour. Great show! The band members are an awesome group to talk to.
They work the croud really well and a lot of good music.
The band was hampered by some stupid immigration screw up leaving their bandmate stranded in Canada. They performed wonderfully anyway even 25% reduced in vocal power and used their terrific sense of humor to create an ingenious solution with a cardboard cutout and an iPad. they had the club absolutely rocking, stomping, and clapping with little more than the power of their voices and commitment to the songs. Terrific!
The music is infectious, filled with humor, and played by excellent musicians. The female drummer was amazing, the lead guitarist was terrific, as was the bassist, and Igor was vastly entertaining and constantly engaged the audience in the process; singing along, clapping along, forming a conga line, all at his command. He had us in the palm of his hand with his Ukrainian charm.
My Niece turned 21 on the day the The Longest Johns were playing in San Diego. She asked for tickets for her birthday, as she said they were her favorite band. I had never heard of this band, listened on Spotify to their songs and wasn't the type of music I typically I would listen too. I didn't really get them. So I went to the concert and was blown away by their energy, liveliness, and all around fun vibe this band has. They have a loyal following and I can see why. I went in as a non fan, and came out as a Fan. Great concert even with a missing member. The Ipad substitute was brilliant. I would recommend seeing them again if they come back to town.
Loved the music, the interactions (esp. the man in the monitor. The crowd was happy and kind to each other; thank goodness….we were packed in like sardines
Chances are, if you're going to see these guys you're already a huge fan and know like half the songs by heart, so seeing them perform live is awesome. The space was super intimate and meant we were really close to them, the set list was perfect, they made silly jokes like half the time and were genuinely funny, and were lovely to meet after the show
The entire experience was incredible, start to finish. Parking was plentiful, the venue was beautiful and intimate, and the band was awesome. They had a lot of audience engagement, they were entertaining and the performance was outstanding. They even had a meet & greet afterward and stayed until everyone who wanted to got a chance to greet them and get things signed or photos taken or whatever. Highly, Highly recommend.
If you like sea shanties, folk music or pirates, the Longest Johns are a must sea.
I’ve been to my fair share of shows, both large and small. Even down one member due to a visa issue, they put on an energized performance. They made us feel like we were a part of a community. Highly recommend this group. Give them a listen on Spotify if you can.
