PERT NEAR SANDSTONE IN CONCERT:

Pert Near Sandstone continue to breathe new life into traditional bluegrass with their contemporary sound and vibrant performances. At their boot-stomping live shows the band tears through favorites like "Solid Gone" and "Ship of Fools" while a troupe of clog dancers provide a rhythmic counterpoint to the furious fiddling, creating an infectious energy that inspires plenty of dancing among concertgoers. With two piano players, four fiddlers, a washboard player, and plenty of additional backup singing by enthralled audiences, the band never fails to create a larger-than-life experience on their must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Pert Near Sandstone was formed in the mid-'00s amid the roots music scene of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Along with bands like Trampled By Turtles and 4onthefloor, the group helped put the nascent scene on the map with their electrifying live shows and updated approach to traditional bluegrass. Beginning with a live album released in 2005, the band made a string of acclaimed recordings that included 2011's Paradise Hop -- a Top 10 bluegrass album on eMusic. The group delivered another stellar collection of songs on 2014's LP The Hardest Part of Leaving, building considerable anticipation for their next tour.

    Great Band! Horrible venue!

by Pandy on 11/17/23Ophelia's Electric Soapbox - Denver

I bought 2 tickets 3 months ago to see Pert Near Sandstone AND the Henhouse Prowlers. We rally did have THE BEST seats at Ophelia's Electric Soapbox! Tickets, website, and advertising said showtime was 8:00. We arrived at 7:30and the fist act, PNS, didn't start until 9:00. My friend became fatigued, and we left at 10:00. He said that if he had known that the concert didn't start after 9:00, he would have declined the offer to go with me. I am really disappointed that I totally missed the 2nd act. I think that Ophelia's should have been more open and honest about the actual showtimes. Very misleading!!! I won't go back there!

Pert Near Sandstone and the Flat Footer in Madison, WI

by Earth Suit on 1/17/23The Sylvee - Madison

Overall, I was impressed with both the music and the energy of band, not to mention the workout the flat footer got in (sorry, I didn't catch his name). The only detractor wasn't on the band, but the venue itself (the Sylvee in Madison, WI). It hosts music events, yet I thought the acoustics were too "echoey". I was nearly convinced the bands that performed that night were using a constant reverb, even on vocals. Otherwise, my wife and I loved it.

    Pert Near Sandstone was wonderful!

by Paprika1k on 4/15/14Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

The musicians and dancers were amazingly talented. A joy to watch. The first half of the concert was perfect. After intermission young members of the audience moved to the front of the auditorium and blocked our view. I would have rated this event 5 stars if this had not happened. My husband and I are too old to remain standing for a concert. We left early.

Great Band, Great Venue, Great Night

by BluegrassBoomer on 4/15/14Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

Pert Near Sandstone always delivers a fun gig, and this was no exception. First set - new songs (Duh - this was a CD Release Party). Bought the new CD at break. Second set - mostly old songs, with a lot of special guests. 2 piano players, 4 fiddlers, 5 cloggers, Dave S. from Trampled By Turtles, etc. The Fitz was a neat venue - small but very comfortable, an old time theater.

My Dad and I Will Remember Forever

by MplsMoni on 4/15/14Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

One of the most amazing shows I've been to in my life. I was a little hesitant because the Fitz has seating and I prefer standing room bluegrass shows but people did not sit anyways and everyone made friends with their neighbors. Beer was sloshing, feet were stamping, and people were dancing and cheering through the whole theater. The fact that it was at the Fitz didn't hinder it at all, it actually made the whole show seem so much more surreal with the amazing architecture and sense of history around you. I took my dad who drove 3 hours from his farm that he was nervous to leave in the first place, knowing he loved a good bluegrass show. I've never seen him grin like that in years. I watched waves of farming anxiety wash off him and I could not be happier for that. Thanks Fitz, and thanks Pert Near Sandstone for that night!

    Loved Pert Near's bluegrass blast!

by cookies5 on 6/16/13Weesner Family Amphitheater - Apple Valley

High scores for both the band and the venue! The outdoor amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo is fabulous and they have a great lineup for the summer. So great to be outdoors and have the rocks (spectacularly lit!) and the water for backdrop. Pert Near musicians are incredibly talented and put on a very entertaining show. You could tell the band was really having fun. "This is not your grandfather's bluegrass!" We -- and the entire audience -- clearly wanted the night to go on and on. Wherever the venue, go to enjoy Pert Near as soon as you can!!!
