Saw Patty Loveless at the Birchmere (Alexandria, Virginia) on Thursday night. It was my first time to see any artist at the Birchmere, which is a very intimate venue for watching any concert (and a place to eat some pretty good food before the show also). Patty has such a large number of country hit songs to her name that, even though she and her band played 20 songs, they could have played another 15-20 songs and still not covered all her hits. That said, there were also a few (new/old) songs that were new to me, which I enjoyed just as much. It's hard for me to describe (you know it when you hear it), she and her band have a musical style that is a bit more Appalachian in nature (perhaps her album title "Mountain Soul" says it better) that I really appreciate the chance to listen to. She is not a flashy performer, but the depth of feeling in her music is not matched by many, which is befitting a member of the Grand Ole Opry. She has always been one of my favorite female country artists, and I'm very glad to have had the opportunity to see Patty perform in person.
I'd give the concert 4.5 stars out of 5, which I'll round up to 5 since she's such a classy and distinguished artist. :-)
