Oklahoma Sooners Football History

The Oklahoma Sooners football team has a tradition of excellence that predates Oklahoma's statehood, with the first game being played in 1895. Under head coach Bud Wilkinson, the Sooners won their first three national championships in 1950, 1955 and 1956 and put together a 47-game winning streak that began in 1953 and ended in 1957. That record still stands to this day. Barry Switzer coached the Sooners to glory in the ’70s and ’80s, winning national titles in 1974, 1975 and 1985, while Bob Stoops led Oklahoma to an Orange Bowl victory and a national title in 2000. Seven players have won the Heisman Trophy while playing for the Sooners: Billy Vessels in 1952, Steve Owens in 1969, Billy Sims in 1978, Jason White in 2003, Sam Bradford in 2008, Baker Mayfield in 2017 and Kyler Murray in 2018.

Oklahoma has two main rivals in the Big 12 Conference, Oklahoma State and Texas. The "Bedlam" series against the Oklahoma State Cowboys dates back to 1904, when Oklahoma first faced what was known until 1957 as Oklahoma A&M. The annual "Red River Showdown" with the Texas Longhorns is played every October at Dallas' Cotton Bowl as part of the State Fair of Texas. In 2018, Oklahoma and Texas played each other for the first time in the Big 12 Championship Game, with the Sooners defeating the Longhorns, 39-27, to give Oklahoma their record 48th conference championship.

The Sooners are now coached by Brent Venables, who builds upon previous coach Lincoln Riley's success of leading the Sooners to Big 12 championships and College Football Playoff appearances in each of his first two seasons. Oklahoma joins the Southeastern Conference in the summer of 2024.

    Uof H vs. OU

by BobinWilliobrook on 9/10/16NRG Stadium - Houston

Being a U of H Grad, this was a great game. It was especially fun to visit with the OU fans around us as I hear a lot about OU, OSU and TU Football with my siblings living in Tulsa. Saw one shouting match in our section. Both girlfriends kept their dates separated. Good job! (The beer may have had something to do with that). Only real bad item was the time it took to park (I had Platinum Parking). Just too many vehicles to handle. Ended up behind the Dome in the Blue Lot. Next time, a shuttle, or a variation of it like the Rodeo, should be considered.

    It's always nice

by Inahurry on 9/7/16NRG Stadium - Houston

It's always nice when your team wins (Go Coogs!) and yet it's even nicer when the venue is is as top notch as NRG stadium. Truly the nicest BIG stadium I've ever experienced! Section 316 gave a perfect view of the field with the bonus of walking up the aisle to a lounge complete with food, drink, cushy sofas and big screen TV's! Definitely will go back to NRG for a Texans game!

    by TGurrl11 on 9/6/16NRG Stadium - Houston

This was one of the best college games I've ever attended. The atmosphere was amazing, and despite the normal student/team rivalry, there was nothing but respect for everyone attending. No foolishness!! Our seats were great, and a Coogs win just made the experience all the better. This is the type of game that people want to attend. Kudos!

    NRG

by bumpalicious on 9/6/16NRG Stadium - Houston

Getting into the parking lot stadium was fine but exiting was one of the worst I've ever experienced. The concession stand people were terrible. We went to get a bite at half time and we ended up missing most of the third quarter because they were so slow!!!!!!!! We ordered a small nacho, small hot dog and a pretzel. Let's just say I never got my pretzel and had to ask for a refund.

by PineConePete on 9/6/16NRG Stadium - Houston

A lot of excitement with local U of H playing a sound program like Oklahoma. Access to the game, from ordering tickets to parking, pregame activities and the game itself was first class.
