About

Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra In Concert

Founded in 1955, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has long been one of Alberta, Canada's most esteemed musical institutions. The Calgary Philharmonic plays in the acoustically acclaimed Jack Singer Concert Hall at Arts Commons, as well as its former home the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. It is also the resident orchestra for the Calgary Opera, the Alberta Ballet Company, and the Honens International Piano Competition. But a long and storied history led to the CPO's becoming what it is today.

In 1910, violinist A.P. Howell founded the First Calgary Symphony, which re-formed as the New Calgary Symphony in 1947, a synthesis of the Mount Royal Orchestra and the First Calgary Symphony. In 1955, under the baton of Dutch conductor Henry Plukker, the New Calgary Symphony merged with the Alberta Philharmonic, and became the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Today, the group often performs with the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus.

The CPO has made numerous recordings for CBC Records, taking on works by composers like Beethoven, Gershwin, Mahler, and Liszt. Since its inception, the CPO has worked with a number of incredible music directors, including Austrian conductor Hans Graf. The current music director is Norwegian conductor Rune Bergmann.

The CPO's repertoire combines traditional programming like Salute to Vienna New Year's Concert and programs featuring works by Ravel, Debussy, and Berlioz, with more modern shows featuring music by the likes of Radiohead, Marvin Gaye, and various film composers. Additionally, the orchestra has been known to perform live film scores alongside the films, pleasing fans of movie franchises like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

The CPO's season runs until early summer 2019 and will feature, in addition to the aforementioned music, a number of exciting programs, including May's Controversial Classics, which places music by Stravinsky alongside challenging contemporary works by lauded composer John Corigliano. For the Romantics out there, catch the CPO's reading of Brahms' rapturous Double Concerto in March.

    Better than expected!

by Joanna23 on 5/22/23Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The sound in the venue was really great. I wasn’t sure what to expect with a live orchestra sound mixed with a movie, but it felt natural and their timing was impeccably seamless. The performance was top-tier. Hearing the score performed was better than being at a movie theatre. The orchestra played very well and Massamba Diop was a show-stopper. Lawrence Loh’s conducting skills were perfect. I would consider attending a concert like this again in the future.

This was a fantastic experience and show. Being able to watch the move while the orchestra performed the score made it so personal. Would highly recommend this and we will be doing it again.

    Immersive Experience

by ThisWasGreat on 12/13/22Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

This event was amazing!!! Right from the beginning when they played the 20th Century Intro the crowd went wild. Through out the whole movie it felt surreal to hear the soundtrack being played live in front of you, and it got even more amazing after intermission when they brought out the choir. They needed more dates for this!! It was a 10/10 experience and was worth every penny. Looking forward to Black Panther.

    Home alone

by Kathnomac on 12/12/22Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

As a birthday present from a friend of mine, he got me tickets to see the Phil harmonics. He was unable to attend so that gave me a chance to take my 10 year daughter with me. Seeing her face when we walked in to the auditorium was such a great sight! I had goosebumps the whole time they were playing and my daughter was just awe of how perfectly they went with the music to the movie. It was such an incredible experience and amazing long last memory we won’t forgot! We will definitely be attending more shows in the future.

    Home Alone concert

by Lana on 12/12/22Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The orchestra was as professional sounding as could be, and the choir was amazing! Its too bad that the screen covered the choir, but when you closed your eyes to let the singing wash over you, it didn't matter.

    Not what we expected!

by COMO on 5/22/19Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The music was wonderful. We thought we would hear more about the music composition and technical stuff about musical support to modern big screen movie presentations. We are not Lord of the Rings followers and now we know why - The movie was far too violent for us to enjoy. We left at Intermission. There were three of us in our group - All with the same opinion. Sorry to be so negative.

    For 5 and under

by Hawkes73 on 10/7/15Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The music was very good but the "actors" played a bigger role than the music. My 6 and 9 year olds were only somewhat interested in the actors. Not enough focus on the music. Overall it was a little disappointing.
